Interesting looking, heavy porcelain(?) "trough" running between the two washers and the extractor. I wonder if there is/was a special "lip" to allow water to run off into the extractor?

And speaking of extractors----that one in the sub-basement of the Westbrook Hospital must have been lowered by a crane when they were building the foundation of the hospital! It looks like it weighs a a few thousand pounds all by itself!

Thanks for sharing!

Extractor could also have been brought in as parts and assembled/bolted on site. Can only imagine the damp, hot and humid conditons of a laundry located in a second level sub-basement.

You'll notice each laundry has an extractor, which we can assume the washers only washed and or spun very slowly, if at all.

Had an ironing table similar to the one in the last photo built in my laundry area for doing linens. Can do large bed sheets, table cloths and the like faster than using my ironers.

Still cannot imagine ironing an entire daily hospital's worth of linens that way.

Somewhere back at my Mom's house there is a picture of the "Pantotorium" - a laundry in Omaha that my Dad's great aunt Mary (who bore a remarkable resemblance to the ladies in that picture) worked at for many years, after coming over from Ireland.

She lost all of her life's savings in a bank run during the depression, the poor thing.

I'll ask my mom where that picture is and get it scanned.
