Hi everyone
I need help
My old faithful maytag DE 606 is hot... too hot actually!
When it's running you can't touch it!
Is it safe?
What can I do to make sure it's not overheating? Is there a temperature control of some sort?

Thanks for any help

too hot

Not sure about a temp control, but have you checked if it's venting properly or if the vent is clogged?

To check the if the vent is at fault just temporarily disconnect it and run a load and see if it is still overheating.

On the 606,they should be located on the blower housing.Need to remove the back panel to access them.

Thanks for the tip
I don't wanna sound too demanding but does anybody knows where I could find drawings of that? I need visual...
I really don't want to have and through out a perfecly working dryer for a little thermostat problem
And I really think that the lint filter keeps falling off because it's too hot and the plastic deforms

Thanks again

Wich thermostat now?

Thank you for the link Goatfarmer
I have anohter question (sorry)
There seems to be 9 different types of htermostats for my dryer: cool down thermostats, regulating thermostats, cycling thermostat high limit thermostat and also a thermostat kit
There also seems to be a difference if my dryer was built before or after 5-16-67
How can I know wich thermostat I need and also when was my dryer built?

Thanks again for all the help

the letters at the end of the serial number denote the year and month of production

Youre not ingnorant

You'd have to have the Maytag Serial # dating list to
know what the letters stand for. If your machine has the timer
in the center of the console it was manufactured 1967 - October, otherwise it would be 1991 - October.
the first letter is the year, the second letter is for the month. Is it a "Halo of Heat" with the round filter in the back of the drum? Definitely 1967; lint filter in door 1991.

thanks

Cool so my dryer is from 1967!
It has halo of heat written on it !
The filter in the back of the drum keeps falling off!
Cool
Now that I know it was built in october 67 I Hope I should be able to find the proper thermostat

Thanks

Check your venting....make sure it isn't clogged with lint. Might be a good idea to change the hose altogether and make sure the hood on the outside of the house is clean as well. Vent hose should be as short and straight as possible...no excess laying on the floor behind the dryer.

Venting is ok

Nothing is clogging the venting but I still removed the little lint that had accumulated on the sides
I'll try to get a new thermostat and see what happens
I'll let you guys know
Thanks

RE DE 606

HI
have you checked the vent hood out side? the flappers some times get built up with stickey lint and get stuck 1/2 closed or open. especially if it is the old style that only has the 2 1/2 inch opening. that could cause the problem. One other thing to check is to see if the felt seals on the drum are in good shape and the one that is around the heat shield. with out them it often changes the air patterns snd csuses the high limit thermostat to cycle which is why its getting too hot.if it is cycling on the high limit stat you will hear a matllic click when it has cycled off and on. hope this helps

bad venting after all

The condo I just moved in is brand new
And I think that the venting was not planned for a 39 yo dryer
The problem is that the duct is too long it starts from the ground behind the dryer then goes up about 8 feet goes throug a wall for almost 20 feet and finallt gets out
The maytag technicain I saw when I bought the thermostat told me that there's nothing I can do about it....
Is he right?

Thanks for all the help I got from everyone you can see pics of the dryer and washer on my other post

booster

I'd get an inline booster (if you can access the line to install it):

The inline booster looks like an interesting item (I have a long run for my dryer vent in the house). Is it worth the $167 price?

The line is inaccessibile since it'sinside the walls of my appartement
I don't see myself smashing walls but the seem to have an outide unit that I will check, It's a little picey for 217$
I guess for now I'll deal with a HOT dryer since I have to face a transmision rebuild for my washer... need to save some money....

Thanks to all who helped
