Just to cause some more commotion, how about everyone's choices for vintage washers, dishwashers and dryers with the most roll-out yer freak flag outrageous bells and whistles? My first choice, to get the ball rolling, is Mark's FABULOUS Philco that thinks it's really a jukebox. (It also has an agitator that could have scored a spot on STAR TREK as a guest villain space thing).

I JUST LOVE THIS FANTABULOUS FREAKAZOIDAL MACHINE!!!:

Mom's TOL Kenmore (by D&M) 1969 DW had more lights than the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center normally does.

Her Mid-line 1974 model [they moved into a new house and AGAIN had to chop, remove, reconfigure & insert to get a DW] of same mannie was similar to the one Gansky posted that he found NIB, unused.

That thing's amazing. Is there an old thread about it? What do all those switches and leeeeevers say? I'm hearing a song but I can't get it right: "Jukebox hero..stars in his eyes," la da da dadada--really high pitched chorus. What is it? Drivin' me nuts!

Imagine, that washer played a song in my head.

Now that's a friggin' washing machine.

Our 68 or 69 Philco Duomatic had that control panel, but the buttons were all black and the areas above them were a dark turquoise. They lit up nicely when the control panel light (full width behind the plastic lens below the buttons) was on. Our control panel devoted 4 buttons to the wash. The settings boiled down to: hot/warm, warm/warm/, warm/cold, cold/cold. The dryer puttons were: Normal Dry, Perma Press, No Heat and Dryer Off. On the left of the big dial was the load size dial and on the right of the big dial was the dryness selector dial. Perma Press Dry had an interesting cool down. When the load was dry, the main heat shut off, but an 1100 watt heater stayed on and so did the cold water condensing system. The powerful blower recirculated the air through the drum and the cold water condenser which gradually cooled the air. The 1100 watt heater kept the clothes from getting damp. Periodically, a chime would sound to let you know the clothes were in cool down and ready to be removed. Three minutes before the dryer shut off in the Perma Press cool down, the water valve closed and the water in the sump was pumped out, but the machine and the water shut off at the same time at the end of normal dry so it was safest to keep a small bowl under the washer lint trap so that the cup of water would not spill into the machine and onto the floor when it was opened for cleaning. That machine dried clothes perfectly. Once set to the dryness level the user preferred, there was no under or over drying and the clothes came out so soft. I wish I could have saved it, but the parents vetoed that. I never had the opportunity to use one of the vented Duomatics, but they were faster than the condensers. Instead of a solid drum back, the drum back in the vented Duomatics was heavily perforated.

I would vote also for the Holy Grail of 1-18's, but I think the Custom Imperial model from the year or two before was much more feature laden than the all-push-button 1-18.

Applicance consoles and auto dashboards

Anyone ever notice the correlation between the way each was styled through the years? Late forties, both were functional, plain. Mid to late fifties, unbelievable variety, as if they were entries in design contests! Early sixties, still plenty of chrome and style, but toned down some. Sevneties, still a little individuality. Today ... can't tell one make from another.

Yes they did make the Kenmore push-button series shown in Gansky's post. Remember seeing them at Sears and at the home of a couple of lucky people we knew.

KM * * * * Rating!

Thanks for posting the KM pushbutton and 4-star pics. They had it all over Whirlpool for styling, probably more different models over the years than anyone (open to debate?) Due to the ubiquitous Sears catalog, a lot of us quickly recoginze 'em, too. (I'd forgotten about the sprinkler in the TOL models, and KM offered a plastic ball you filled with water to do the same.)

My aunt had a pair of '58 4-stars at the farmhouse. Loved seeing them when we visited, especially when they were running and lighted up! Those shades of red, blue and yellow always make me think about those dials. Come to think of it, between the old turquoise filter-flo, the 4-stars and Kelvinator, my aunts had some pretty neat machines. Wish I had them today.

jamiel-here's the lint bag setup on the 60 LK. It's so funny what we all do at different periods in our lives. I had two other Kenmore dryers which had the same setup (one even matched my 60 Kenmore washer which I still have) and when they broke down I pitched them. I will never get over throwing out those dryers and some great washers also but even tho' I liked the vintage machines I wasn't into keeping them around until I decided to start my collection just three years ago this month.

We had the Model 80 1960 Kenmore when I was growing up. The dryer had the same lint bag. We'd empty and reuse it many, many times. By the time I went to college (1977), they weren't selling the pink bags with the window anymore. They looked more like a generic vacuum bag.

The Model 80 was all-pushbutton, like the Lady, but the buttons were shaped differently (like the '59 Lady K). They were workhorses. My parents were still using their pair when I moved home after college in '82. I finally traded the STILL WORKING pair for new Whirlpools in '85, after my Mom died, mostly because I was sick to death of having had the same washer since I was an infant.

Of course, now I wish I had them back. But there's the folly of youth for you.

Lint bag

Good morning Patrick!

Unfortunately I'm quite sure they are not available thru Sears anymore. However, that just might be something to check on when I have a moment or two.
I remember calling Sears years ago about parts for the 60 and I was told that they were phasing out parts for those old machines. I kick myself for not buying some at the time, especially a new Singer timer they had for it. However, the 60 is still doing weekly loads along with the 56 sudsaver.

Regarding your comment about the pic Patrick--Isn't it wonderful what a little lens cleaning will do. Certainly not like those pix I sent you a couple of days ago. Now I wonder what a little serious cleaning with a soft tissue would do-so far I've only used my finger! ((--::

I am looking forward to seeing you next week!

Brett-yes I agree with you that it looks like the bag would disintergrate very quickly but suprisingly it doesn't. It goes on and on and on. I remember back when I would run out of bags that I would use an oversized nylon sock and that would work also. Not as good but it would work.

Powerfin64-No I only Wish I had the mate to the 60 LK dryer I have! I'll never give up hope tho' as I never will in finding my two dream Kenmores. Hey that's half the fun-in looking and searching.

Sudsman-Yes I thoroughly relate to what you say. I walk in the washroom in the morning and see the sun's rays dancing off different chrome parts of the machines and it's absolutely a sight to behold. The styling and definition they put into the old machines is awesome. One point I love about the 50s Kenmores is that the cabinets had rounded edges and big fat lipped console tops that gave them style, flair and an individual identity all their own. Certainly unlike today when all the machines look like square boxes with white plastic consoles and you can't tell one apart from another. It's sad, at least to me. The same holds true to cars.

Dick that is some beauties you have there. I just got back from the Great Indoors and was looking at the cabrio/oasis models and they are reminiscent of the old Kenmores with the rounded edges and the big tops.

Though they certainly do not hold a candle to the fifties machines :-)

I'm wondering about that bag lint system. By what mechanism does it get the lint into the bag? Seems there'd have to be airflow/exhaust through it, like a typical vacuum bag. Is there an exhaust port toward the front of the bag cavity that the picture doesn't show?

Post# 157830 , Reply# 56   9/29/2006 at 22:01 (6,389 days old) by dick_s. ()
For DADoES

You're right, there is an airflow/exhaust tube that extends from about the middle of the back of the dryer up to the tray under the lid that houses the lint bag.

I came home tonite and instead of packing for my trek up to as far as Seattle to retrieve all my beautiful machines that are being stored at various places along I5, I tore apart "the office" and found at least one pix to show you all what the tray set up looks like. I know there are more-I might find them one of these days.

This is one of the dryers I had years ago and pitched. In the picture it is sitting right next to the 60 Kenmore (from my childhood) and while we are enjoying our cocktails that evening, I am working on the lint filter to remove a clog at the end so it will work properly again. That set was going every day and the 60 still is. This was the very first house we bought and we had just finished remodeling the w/d alcove off the kitchen. what a party house that was. The pic was taken in 1972.

When I get back from the Pacific NW I'll take a few shots of the back of the 60 LK so you can see how it hooks in.

Call me dense, but I'm still not quite getting it. I understand there's a tube going *into* the collection bag, but how does the airflow exit the bag? If there's no exit, seems like the bag would inflate to a positive-pressure situation that would impede depositing of lint.

Post# 157854 , Reply# 60   9/30/2006 at 00:27 (6,389 days old) by dick_s. ()

See where my finger on my left arm is holding the lower portion of the tray. Okay, then check out the end of the pink bag and find what appears to be a white circle. That is all fine nylon mesh where the air coming thru the bag and depositing the lint exits.

Dick-- What model 1960 KM dryer is that? a Model 70, maybe? I know it's not the Model 80 (which I grew up with). Is there a timer dial on the right side of the console that's hidden in the pic?

Dick S ! A match to your Kenmore!!!

Roanoke Robert has the match to your dryer! You might want to give him a call so that one way or another they could end up as a matched set.

Mark

Robert's phone number is: 540-309-1218
PS Your email address does not seem to work.

Off the computer yesterday and busy with Chris doing lots of things including loading washers on the longbed for my journey up north starting Wednesday but am back now and will try and catch up with the questions asked.

Robert- I am surprised that those bags are so rare these days. Since posting the pix and reading the posts a bit of my memory is coming back and I'm beginning to think somewhere tucked away I have a package of those bags from Sears.

Toggleswitch you are correct--that was the place we decided to put the diswasher which required the minimum amount of remodeling. It worked out well and wasn't inconvenient at all. I don't remember what brand it was but I recollect it did a good job on the dishes and tons of cocktail glasses. ((--::

Frigilux-I don't remember the model of the dryer but it didn't have a timed cycle modifier-you just turned the dial to the corresponding letter and let her rip!

Mark-I don't believe what you just posted! A real shocker! Yes, and I just found out prior to your mention of my outdated email address that I never edited my profile when I went to DSL last fall! Shame on me! AND I need to sit down and write you. I will. It's been a while. And thanks a million once again.

Oh come on folks! You can do better than this! More brands! More pictures! Here's another candidate, right in my bailiwick, TOL Ge's from the early sixties, the introduction of the minibasket!!

I believe the Kenmore lint storage system used a centrifugal separator to pull the lint out of the main exhaust stream and send it to the bag with only a small portion of the exhaust air. The air from the bag chamber is sucked back into the dryer and squirted out with the rest of the exhaust.

A little too full, don't you think?

It's like the artist on that WARD's ad had never seen a washer full of water before. Jeez, leave the airbrush at home.

Don't blame the artist!

I think one of our members here probably "tinkered" with the pressure switch! (Timmy! Quit fiddling with the washer knobs!)

...good point, but they were a very nice, effective, and versatile washer (albeit they were as noisy as a threshing machine).

I would love to find one of these (or a similar Norge, Magic Chef, Admiral, Wizard/Citation) for a daily driver. They were wicked tough and washed (and extracted) like a dream from what I remember.

I saw one of these at St Vince's a few years back and passed it up. TOL, and the most lovely shade of avocado...

When it came to placebo buttons and bells an whistles, no one did a better job of it than Lady Kenmore. Year after model year, she dressed up the outsides of her appliances to reflect the space age, all while running WW2 technology in her innards. It's was all very effective marketing, and only the Philco pictured in this thread, did a comparable job of the making a washer look like a multi-speed blender. (I'm surprised they don't have a button labeled "puree.") I loved it all at the time, and sort of miss those old "Just Push the Button" days.

yet maytag was very consistent in their minimalism. should be a thread on the PLAINEST 60s/70s washers (NOT necessarily BOL).

Puree

Isn't Puree a setting on modern, direct drive Kenmore/Whirlpool washers? Wait, no, that's the Heavy Duty setting...same thing...LOL.

Rinso, I agree with you about Kenmore's repackaging old technology under new control panels.

Quite frankly, I am more in agreement to the "jukebox" theory. Because these machines looked so musical. Heck, they probably were, in their own way of course.

Jukebox theory

There was nothing musical about Kenmore's unbalance buzzer; what an awful noise!

Modern GE's

gmmcnair's profile picture
Actually modern GE's tend to be even worse. At least the newer direct drive Kenmore/Whirlpools seem to be reasonably durable while pureeing your clothes. Not like my friend's GE...ready for the crusher after four years of light use.
