I was curious if the appliance farm is still around today. With scrap prices higher than in the past, has the yard been cleared?
I sure wish there had been something like that here in Michigan!

Where was it located? Must have been somewhere fairly dry.. Those machines would have been piles of rust after a couple of seasons here!

Yes the farm is now gone, most of those pictures you see in the Abedeern picture album were from 1997.

The farm was located 11 miles north of Aberdeen, South Dakota.

aberdeen south dakota

I was a member of the club when the guys first went out there, I always thought eh it'll be there later. But well, its not. I'm just so glad to know some of those machines went to great guys who lovingly restored them.

I look at the farm pics at the root of the site, it would have been a lifetime experience to see that, I could have spent a week walking and looking, never even taking anything home.

I wonder if any other appliancevillers ever wonder who used the machine before, and what kind of life it had?

Wow! 1997, I had no idea it was almost ten years since the pictures were taken.
Was the owner of the farm some sort of collector, or was that his business?

from what i understand

and robert and the gang would know best, but I'll give it a shot.

It was an elderly couple who decided to get into the recycling buisiness except they never recycled anything! I think they aged and were unable to tend to the property, in 97 they were still alive but in bad health. They took very little money for each of the treasures, then once the family took over the land it was cleared and everything went to the trash. Something about the city being upset about all the metal on the property?

The Aberdeen area of South Dakota is fairly dry during the summer-they do get bad snowstorms there during the winter. There was a smaller appliance "graveyard" just outside Rapid City, South Dakota. It was also cleaned up-sadly most of the machines went thru the auto crusher at Jalopy Jungle.Appliances would have a better chance of survival in South Dakota than the very Humid conditions in NC.

I think it would be pretty cool to take a stroll through the farm. I know of a mini-farm here that we lovingly refer to as the 'boneyard.' It belongs to a local new and used appliance dealer here. He allows me to search for parts out there during his business hours. He usually takes one of my parts in trade for his parts since we both are in the same biz. He deals mostly Maytag and Amana which I really don't care for but he does have a few of what I like out there. Any Amana lovers here?
