As much as I am annoyed at the way this machines leaves "YIBBLES" on the glasses, and apparently this is a well-known fact and issue with this machine (see link), I am more concerned with the fact that the vent does not appear to open at any time even during the "Dry" phase.

I decided to do some exploratory surgery.
Off to Sears hardware department to get a "Hex" screwdriver.
The screw-head for the door panel screws has a six-sided star configutation...

off it came to see , this..........

Here, we see the offending "vent"

I thought this was supposed to be a "power-vent" with a mechanically operated open-close mechanism, but I could not figure out how it works.

So I did the macho, rugged, testosterone-laden-veins thing. I ripped out the whole darned rubber flapper.

Now natural convection air-currents will help dry the dishes.
Noise-schmoise!

But before sealing her back up, a water test!
Notice screwdriver in latch, timer safety door-switch bypassed and in-lap.

Ran the machine. No water leakage. YAY!

and then we have a drying vent that actually DOES something.

I am curious though. Does anyone know what those two wires do that go into the side of the vent orifice/housing? (prior pics)

I think that the wires are for the active vent. You should hear it at the beginning of the cycle close, and when it starts to dry it will open. My Kenmore dishwasher also has this feature, and it really does help seal in sound.

HTH

I forgot to mention

The vent should stay closed 6 minutes after the drying cycle has started and then open to let the steam escape. But since you tore the whole thing out anyway, to heck with it!

LOL. Mine never opened.
(Where never is short for NOT EVER!)
Herein lies my problem!

I honestly could not figure-out how it opened the rubber flap. Do you think the unit in my machine is missing a piece or some kind? (Besides the flap I removed Einstein...ducks and runs!)

Doesn't; ever.

I only know of how it should work in that my basment GE GSD5300D00ww DOES have a power vent that actually opens and closes!

It was supposed to retail for $900 at the time. Pity it can't wash or dry.

Luckily I got it for half of that as a scratch-and-dent.

Tender

Gary!
You cannot force someone to dry! Yibbles can become the texture on which the patina of love is created. All it takes is a little extra rubbing. Now, no more talk of superiority or forcing. Am I clear? One upsmanship is not to be applied to dishwashing or you'll never get oneupsya's.. Read the manual.

Steve, as you have probably found out by now, that was a wax motor that opened and closed the vent flap in your KA and it could have been replaced without too much trauma. The only thing about not having it closed during the wash/rinse part of the cycle is that if you had a wood counter above, the extra water vapor would not do the wood any good. It might make a few drops of condensation near the vent on the underside of the solid counter, but probably won't harm anything.

ah. so what is a wax motor?

The vent protrudes ever so slightly from the counter, so I do not fear my wood counter getting soft or harmed. I don't think moiture will be a problem.

Hi Steve,

A wax motor behaves much like a solenoid...uses current to provide motion. Current warms the wax inside, and it expands to move a plunger. The biggest advantage to wax motors is they are noiseless, but slow...no mechanical "snap" ..much like your GE d/w drain valve. Hope this helps!

I'm sure this wax motor on this vent is fuse protected, the one on my original Asko dishwasher wasn't and when it went bad, it took the control board with it. A similar thing happened with the first-series Maytag Neptune washers and the door-lock mechanism.

WP is using wax motors all over the place - they also are (or were at last check) used to control the valve that runs the Turbo-Zone wash system, diverting water flow from the upper wash arm to the nozzles.

GREG!
This perhaps explains the burnt orignal control board and the (subsequent)lack of venting! I'm thinking the fuse didn't go as fast as it should have, only to blow later.
