I am thinking this tube on top of the motor is for oil. What would you recommend type-of-oil-wise and how much? Thanks so much for any info.

I am also thinking this bolts into the concrete thing shouldn't be too tough, just drill the two holes and put the anchors in, or no?

Thanks again - (I have enjoyed the other recent posts here even though I don't comment on them all.)

There should be a plug-bolt on the bottom of the tranny that you can drain out the old oil. Replace it with 80-90 weight gear oil. I think Jon used Hypoid Gear oil in his with great sucess.

You sound right on track with the anchors and bolts - it should hold just fine.

Oil

The tube on top of the transmission (it's not the motor, but it's bolted on to the end of the motor) is a breather tube. Ordinarily, the transmissions on these machines needed no attention, though it certainly won't hurt to change the oil especially given that there is a drain plug. I'd be careful about overfilling. Old Dexter commercial machines used a similar transmisssion except that it had 3 speeds rather than two (tumble, low spin and "high" spin-300 tub rpm). These transmissons used a dipstick, and there was oil available for them, which I believe was an 80-weight gear oil.

A dipstick? Wow - never seen that before. The 47 model "S" or the '53 Duomatic I have don't have dipsticks. I wonder if my pre-war 1940 does?
