If the door is reversable(left to right),its made by Speed Queen/Amana.If not,its a Norge.

Yup it's reversible.. I thought it was an ammana made unit.. It works quite well and has superb air flow. Also makes cloths very fluffy
But wheren't these as crappy as there washers?

Not always--

A dryer is vastly simpler in design than a washer, so that a company that makes a less-than-average washer can have a really ok dryer.

The only real difference in many dryers, aside from superior or inferior airflow, is the wattage of the heating coils on their electric dryers or the BTU output of their gas dryers. That may cause drying times to vary somewhat. Lesser dryers will get away with smaller coils, maybe causing longer drying times. I think the Performa dryers (and plese folks, correct me if I'm wrong) use a 5000 watt heater, while the GE dryers still use a 5600 watt coil set. Gas may be a difference of 2500 BTUs or so. Not really that big a deal. Of course, without good airflow, the heat output doesn't make a great deal of difference, so the blower is the more important of the components.

After that, the quality of the bearings, drum supports, etc., will dictate the useful life of the dryer before major service is needed. Nothing like hearing the thud thud thud of a drum running on a broken drum support!!!

Herrin Maytag Norges

I'm 99 44/100 percent certain that the dryers pictured are Maycor Norge-Tags probably built in Herrin Illinois.
I bought a CROSLEY dryer for the old house just a few years ago and it is virtually identical to those Performas you bought. I knew of someone who worked in the (now closing/closed) Herrin Illinois plant and he admitted that they made Crosley units.
Admittedly, the Crosley dryer (same as yours) worked very well and was a great bang for the buck.

The one that Exploder has pictured is DEFINITELY a Searcy-built, Amana-style dryer. The door gives it away. This was built after they canned the Herrin dryer line. For a year or two, Maytag moved all of the dryer production (except for the dependable care, atlantis, newton-neptune lines) to Searcy. Herrin then just built the washers.

Searcy-built Amana-style dryer

This is a Maytag dryer built in the Amana plant in Searcy, Ark. One dryer is no better or worse then the other. Maytag had a big tub out-of-round problem with the Amana dryer when they took over the company. That was rectified, but now doesn't matter since it will now be a WP 29" dryer.

I think you nailed it.

I think runematic nailed it. The Crosley shown is exactly the unit I owned, and my door handle was at the upper left. So indeed my unit was a Herrin unit. The door style does give the differences away. The control panel escucheons are nearly identical though - which fooled me.
