I've noticed new Tappan dw's in the Lowe's print ads recently. Who is making these? Anyone know what they're like? They're damn cheap--so I expect that they are damn cheap.

Sometimes, IMHO the the cheapos:

1- Use lots of water
2- Use lots of water pressure(i.e... make noise)
3- Have simple unadorned racking.
4- Have a few simple, commonly used cycles /programmes.

Geez wouldn't that make them like the vintage ones so many crave?

POS dishwasher and Non-POS dishwasher

Well the el cheapo builders' model WP dws are no dream with those big tubes in the middle of each rack so that it's almost impossible to position a mixing or serving bowl or a large pan in the rack and no wash arm under the top rack so if you do put something like a saucepan or bowl in the lower rack, you can't put anything above it in the top rack.

WP is discontinuing production of its only convertible portable, the one with the standard tub and replacing it with the Maytag tall tub convertible portable. The Maytag is not a very deluxe machine. I have no idea of how well it will perform, but I would hope that it would not have to sit in front of the sink and monopolize the faucet for some of the long cycle times I have seen for the new dishwashers.

Tom, there's the DP850 & DP940. The former is the tyle you netion above. The latter is the last of the ture PowerCleans. Sears still sells an undercounter version of this latter one for $329. A guy here from up north recently got the DU930, undercounter version of the Powerclean portable, not the DurWash portable like you mention above.
