Thanks to a tip from a member here, I managed to save this Norge time line washer from what would have been a nasty fate. The house it was in is going to be torn down and the washer as well as a Frigidaire electric stove were left in the basement! I had no transportation at the time, so I enlisted the aid of another collector and we managed to get it out of the basement and into the trunk of his 1974 Newport! The picture you see is when it was still in the house. For some reason, this old soldier never got thrown out. I could see where another washer/dryer were hooked up on the other side of the laundry tub, just glad this one made it through the years. I have been looking for a Norge, but never thought I would get one of the Borg-Warner ones!

Hi Dwight. Congratulations on finding a Norge Time Line. They are so rare. Two of my aunts had them and I loved watching them when I was young. I also liked the sound of the pump.
Is your machine working?

Ross

A very rare find!!

Congratulations on finding the Norge and saving it! Looks like it is in good condition, considering it is over 50 years old. Robert has restoration pixs of one of those posted in this site. I think the 1950's Norge machines are very cool.

I found a couple 1950's Norges, but mine are junkyard queens. Don't know if I will be able to do anything with them or not. They have sat outside for 40 years.
Would like to make one good one, if possible, from parts of both. These are covered with a tarp behind my garage now.

Thanks guys! I still can't believe I found one. I was thinking I would be lucky to get a model from the mid sixties, and then this one came by! Cleaned it up after taking this picture, it looks a whole lot better now.
I haven't tried it out, and won't until I replace the cord with a grounding one, and make some quick electrical checks.

So is this one a 1956 model? I didn't see the POD on it.

I think that might be a bit earlier. Maybe 1954. This ad was from 1954.

They sat out about 40 years. I just can't throw them away! I busted myself up good dragging these out of the junkyard too! Kenny was helping me, and he knows! lol!
I have a 1960 Frigidaire to do next, then I want to try to fix the later model Norge. If all else fails, I will save the timer and trans parts for Robert and you. It may be a 2008 project. Got to tuck point the bricks on the front porch of the house this year. YUK! Would much rather restore a 1950's Norge....

Congratulations Dwight on a great save! One thing I notice is that the agitator is different from Rick's and Robert's machines...no extended vanes near the top. Are they broken off or is this a different agitator that we haven't seen before?

"Feel the solid sound of harmony, knock on any Norge"! Good job and thanks to a huge trunk of a Chrysler Newport-those cars were so huge they had thier own zip code! Phil

I actually think that is from '57 and looks suspicioulsy like Aunt Jennie's Norge. For openers it has the gray tub and the agitator top looks like the one in the "Ad" Detergent. Also, unless I miss my guess, the control panel lights up - that didn't start until 1956.

That is an amazing find. I have often dreamt that I went to the basement of Aunt Jennie's apartment house and found her Norge sitting in a dark corner of the basement, where it would have resided since 1971.

I guess the dream actually happened but not in Brooklyn.

Ok, got some more pictures of it today. It has the lighted console so it's at least a 1956 then? I can't help but think it looks earlier as it has a lack of chrome like earlier 50's models (maybe it's a stripped down '56 version?). The model number loks like AW-400S.

Post# 182964 , Reply# 21   1/13/2007 at 10:58 (6,284 days old) by captainmoody ()

It cleaned up pretty well with degreaser.

Post# 182965 , Reply# 22   1/13/2007 at 11:00 (6,284 days old) by captainmoody ()

Looks like it should have had some kind of a back. Also, it appears that a kick panel is missing at the front.

Here's a close up of the tag. Come to think of it, looks like the model is AW-450S

Next door

Where I grew up in Martinez, California, the next door neighbor Mrs. Van Zant had a Frigidaire WO-65 washer which she would let me watch. After she moved out, the new neighbor, Irene, had a NORGE timeline, probably like this one.

Another machine from my past!

Can't wait to see it run.

I love the name Norge, you just have to say it with a deep voice!

This is Carmine, the guy who helped Captain Moody get the washer. Here's a picture of it in the car. (If this works correctly) Since I did a good deed saving the washer, can i mention that I have a Frigidare Flair range I'd really like to unload????

Looks like there is some paint splatters on it

There is a product called "goof-off" That removes paint. It is not as hot as paint remover, but it would be wise to do a very small test area to make sure it doesn't damage the surface if it is plastic especially. A few applications of it and the paint usually rubs off pretty good. Don't rub too hard as that action can marr the surface too. Might even use a Q-tip on just the small spots.

Thanks! But I didn't really "find" the washer, it found me! Another member came across it, and told me where it was. (along with the fact that it had only days before its destruction!)
This was another close one. However, not as close as the scrapyard where I found the 1959 Kenmore set! They had literaly seconds before they were going to be compacted!
Northwesty, I will try what you suggested for removing the paint. It has quite a few spots from when they painted the basement over the years.

Re: Norge Time line washer/

When I was just about one or two My mom had the matching gas dryer for the timeline washer we didn't have the washer but just the gas dryer and my mom loved that dryer, but we traded it for a big electric stove from my great Aunt Mariam Miles who had the big electric stove and she needed a dryer. We used the stove for quite awhile but Mariam never got to use the dryer. The house that we lived in at the time was set up for an electric dryer. But that was the best dryer we had ever had. Until we got the big Fedder/Norge/Montgomery Wards dryer when my parents and I lived in Lexington, Ky. It had the 8cubic foot drum and 21 inch steel fan in the back that blew the air through the drum instead of sucking the air through the drum. Beleive me it did not take long for clothes to dry in that dryer with all that room to unfold and billow dry. My it's good to be back able to talk to you guys.
This site had a block on it so I couldn't responed to any questions. Danf.

Great Timeline . . .

and what a great photo of the recovery operation! One can almost imagine the "Mission Impossible" theme playing in the car. I emailed the photo to a good friend of mine who worked as an engineer at Chrysler in the '70s. His comments were: "And a 4 door hardtop as well . . . This is haulin' in style!"
