Well currently i'm workin for my dads building company as a labourer until i find a new job after things with Comet went completely downhill and sour.

Today...was like the usual days...up at 5.45am, On the road at 6.15, an hour and a half's drive....arrive at site. Grab a coffee...have a trott about...Get on with some work...

Today....was different. Today, there was this lil gem layed on her back covered in mess...a Hotpoint WM31 1200 deluxe! Wow!

So my bro bein as supportive as he is and a leanent boss agreed that i could dig it out, check it out and take it home. to which i have done!

I've cleaned it up took the lid off inspected it and all seems well. It was caked in dirt and stuff and inside the drum and seal was full of sludgy detergent. I fitted a new plug as i had to cut the wire off as it was burried about 3ft under loads of wood n stuff.

So decided to run it. Heres where i really need your help guys....

It grumbled abit..clicked and clunked and began the spin tumble into a distribution however, it was really lathargic....and then it cut out! Any ideas?

Below from first to last are the pics of how i found it, dug it out and inspected it

enjooooy

Darren

Brushes would be my first bet. It's conceivable that a machine like this (1996) could still be on the original set of white brushes which wore down and that's why the machine was dumped.

This series also suffered from a multitude of timer issues......

Thank you nick!
My very first guess was brushes. Then i guess its onto the timer! How are you nick? Haven't seen much of you on here lately!

I'm good thanks Darren. Work is crazy at mo, no I'm not around much these days. But I really liked how you rescued that old machine. Does the drum turn freely enough, I'm just wondering if it was labouring the bearing may be shot, but it sounds more likely to be the brushes. They're dead cheap off ebay. Do you want any advice about Hotpoints / brushes and stuff or are you in the know already?

PS I believe you need the white brushes for this model (white holder) not the black ones

Yea its white Brushes for this one. I'm goin to blast the hairdryer through the motor on cool to get the dust out.

The first machine i learnt about repairing was our hotpoint when i was a kid i'd sit with our repairman, he'd tell me what things were, what they did and i'd help. The drum turns alright. I was worried she'd been seriously damaged from being layed in such a procarious postion, but it came out unscathed and in surprizingly good fettle.

Well its down to my supportive brother really...how i learnt of this machine being in the skip. I'd not had any work from my dad for a few days and my brother told me about it and allowed me to spend my morning be paid to rescue that beauty.

I'm really pleased that i saved it from near death when its salvagable. It does make me laugh, how people will happily scrap things these days..I dont want some of my favourite laundry history to disapeer into a distant memory, hence i have 2 20 + yr old models and now this kitten! Granted i would've like a 95 series like i had as a kid, but beggers cant be choosers:D. Besides i'm not ready to settle for a beko! lol!

Wow Darren that is great. Is it an almond? That was my favorite colour and always aged the best.

Thanks for the pics, you must let us know if it gets working again.

Here is the 1992 1000rpm model

Hope all is well. Tomorrow i'm gettin a new set of brushes and fitting them and then i will update!

Indeed.....

In Hotpoint terms "white" machines were white cabinet/brown trim.

Almond was beige cabinet/brown trim

All white models were(and still are) Polar

I still do love the brown panels n cream bodys. I still think they should be current colours!Along with their current ones. lol.

Like they attempted with the first WMA's "Oyster" I really liked that colour but it didnt last long. the first WMA i saw before i got my own was a friends oyster 1400 aquarius like the pic i have included i forget the model. i was impressed back then.

Your father has a point.

Worry not, I'll take the Logic or the Quartz off your hands.

Can you hide it in your bedroom under a table cloth with a lamp or small aquarium or television on top? Non-appliance people can be such PITAs about a few washing machines around the house.

That's a shame. You did such a nice job cleaning it up, and it IS (I gather, from the other UK posters' comments) a really great machine.

Maybe he might reconsider?

(Stress how much better and cheaper it is than one of the new ones???)

If you can't keep it, maybe make some money

Hi Darren

If your dad is really being difficult, I wonder if anyone will want it on Ebay. Even if you can't fix it you can advertise it for spares or repair. It will save you dumping it and you might make yourself a few quid.

Right well,
Final update from me. I did a functionality test on the hotpoint this afternoon and it blew up infront of me a big ass flame came from the timer. The motor sounds in a bad way and i'm feeling a little negative. So i'm goin to lay the hotpoint to its final resting place and find something new that is functioning.

Shame this won't be a fairy tale story, y'no the one...machine escapes near death, is cared for and resorted to dance again..not this time!

Secondly. I am considering selling my Servis Quartz. I've had alot of bother from my dad about me having 3 machines. And quite frankly i'm dying for a change. And the only way i can do that is to sell one. No way in hell am i going to sell my Hoover. As much as i love the Servis it has to go. Any opinions on this?

Darren

Hi Darren

I think you should hold on to the Quartz until you find something you really like to replace it first. What do you have in mind?

Sorry to hear about the Hotpoint, it's such a shame because it looks quite nice. Mind you, you probably had fun doing it up.

Take care

Rob

.. just seen this article with a Hotpoint WM, looks to be a WM12 or WM34 or something like that, in a similar sort of state. Its stood facing the camera at the top left area in the picture and the first one in the article.

Just look at how some people live!
