These are very cool, Don (jetaction) posted a video of this a while back. They don't work quite like the standard-issue dispesners, there is a chamber that holds the softener inside after it's spun out of the center and then the water from the Filter-Flo sloshes up inside the chamber and washes it out into the rinse water. This way, no softener ever comes in contact with fabrics that hasn't been dilluted and keeps the insides clean. The gap around the top is to allow the remaining water to escape when the washer spins.

I remember CU back in the sixties always complaining that GE dispensers retained a little bit of softener which was then dumped during the final spin. Was it this model?

IIRC last time one posted a similar set of auctions for several of the same items, they went for rather large sums. Suspect the fabric softeners have probably broken down by now, but maybe not.
