Salesmen at Lowes told me GE drop the Hotpoint name. Is this true?

Hmm. Try visiting the HotPoint.com Web site and enter the "Contact Us" link so you can call or email your inquiry.--Laundry Shark

Look for the Hotpoint Difference

Judging from what I just saw when I went to the U. S. Hotpoint website (which is as always a product of GE), Hotpoint is alive and well and very much in business; to me Hotpoint was always the second-tier line of GE (sorta like the differences between Chevies and Pontiacs or Fords and Mercurys).

The BRITISH Hotpoint line (as indicated by the "Hotpoint UK") logo in the lower-right corner of the U. S. page is a product of Indesit, the Italian appliance conglomerate. (Just for fun I clicked the Indesit home page and it was in Italian!) The British page has the "Hotpoint USA" log, which brings you back to the GE products...

...however, I would not be surprised if GE's Hotpoint isn't phased out eventually because GE has so many sub-lines of its own now (Adora, Profile, Monogram), etc...GE is brand-extending its line much like Tide!
