Hello everyone, I thought this might be fun.

I absolutely love the old square door frontloaders. Unfortunately, they are pretty rare now. There are of course many makes with square doors, Creda, Hoover, Servis, Bendix etc.. Do you know anymore and have any pics?

Here are some of mine. The first is a Creda brochure sent to me by someone on here. I hope they don't mind me sharing with you (can't remember their username to check). The Creda machine had a 25 min profile spin. Any other pics or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Great Pics....

As always Rob, you come up with some great photos! I love the square-door machines as well. With modern washers, the round look seems to be in. In the future, I would expect that some creative R&D person will present the board with a "new" square door design. I, personally, love the idea of a square door (with window of course) washer and dryer set.

In the first Creda pic, would that cylindrical machine be a spin dryer? Gotta laugh at the "Mean Machine" above too!

Bendix Square Door W/D

What a fab ad Greg!! The descriptions; "Water-Rationer saves gallons of hot water, three fresh warm water rinses, clothes are dried as on a warm, breezy day, and sparkling, almost human pair"; not to mention that this is a beautiful set.

What lady of the house wouldn't want that couple residing in the laundry room!

Had to chuckle at the description of the "counter-high porcelain work surface". It's just the place to put the Westinghouse Roaster for those big Sunday dinners.

Hey Kenny (Goatfarmer): Have you ever come across any of these in Indiana?

That is indeed a spin dryer- all 2800rpm of it ;)

There were 2 versions, with the spout on the front or hose to hook over the sink.

Throwing in my two pennies worth - loving this thread.

Is this a compact one - or the one only slightly smaller than the normal machines?

Would love to know more about these early servis autos - particularly the compacts.

Creda Dryers look like New World Dryers

Hi Guys,

Do any of the Brits remember the New World brand? The were made in the UK and imported to Australia.

I've seen New World washers and Dishwashers, but nothing else here in Australia.

The New World dryers look almost identical to the Creda Dryers.

Creda Super De Luxe

a neigbour at the top of my street had one of these. a very smart looking machine.

Couldn't remember what the second dial did - turns out to be temperature control (could have been spin speed!).

When it gave up the ghost it was dumped in their garage for a few years. One day a skip appeared on their drive - peering in, right at the bottom, on its back was the Super De Luxe. Still probably exists in the local landfill. Another shame.

The Creda dryer series occasionally turn up on ebay - attached are piccies of 3 of them:

top left = Compact 3
top right = Reversamat
bottom = 400 Autodry

The one missing is the Sensamatic

Creda . . .

What cool machines! Creda actually did sell some appliances here in the US in the '80s. I have an old brochure somewhere, but I can't recall if they listed the laundry equipment or not. Years and years after I got the brochure I had a bf with a Creda cooktop. He was surprised that Creda even had a brochure for the US, since his cooktop came with the house and he had never heard of another.

Hi Seamus

That kitchen was like "Optical Aerobics", Marley flooring, Crown paper and also the ubiquetous Russell Hobbs K2 kettle...LOl

The washer was bought in 1978, mums first automatic, previous machine was the Servis Supertwin MK2, which served 6 of us since 1963...I had just started work and bought mum the dryer to match for her birthday, (from Rumbelows)...I replaced the set for them in 1987 with a 6033 pair in dark grey (still working & current) when working for Currys as I had a fab staff deal.

I replaced the bearings in the 308 above and passed it to my gran (that was her first auto washer) and it passed to her sister, my great Aunt, in 1991 after Gran died....this machine, and my Great Aunt Bess at 92, are still going strong and working well...

Replaced by the 6033 Quartz...

Rob, dont you think those early Creda square door machines are just like the later Hoover models???

Nathan, New World where made by Creda, also badged as Jackson as well, that large Creda was one of the most efficient dryers in its time until the Servis models came along....

Paul, The Servis MK72 is the second front loader made by Servis UK, the first was the Compact 300 in 1970, this had a Silver and dark Chocolate/Purple control bezel, and had vertical switches, I have the MK75 dryer to match the 72, both of these were compact machines H30inch x W 22.4 x D 22.4, the later 308 slimline machines were made to cabinet height by adding the dark brown plinth..

The beauty about the 308 / 9 machines was that the drum suspension mounts where bolted to the plinth, and you can take away the cabinet and the drum still works, rather like the ASKO....

Darren, Jon - you NEED to keep that Servis...LOl

Greg / Louis, Those adds always make me laugh...
1950`s = Court Shoes
1960`s = White stillies
1970`s = Killer Heels....lol

Happy washing, Mike

Servis

How do Mike,
Would this have been Servis' very first tumble dryer then, which matched the 300 compact?

So we have the:

300 compact
MK72 compact
Mk308 Slimline......you can see where this is going!!!!

Hi Darren, at least we have All the colours covered...LOl, but they are the same machines inside , and the compacts took the same 9lb load etc..funny to think that the first Bendix 9lb load non bolt down, with damper suspension was 27 inches wide as opposed to the Servis at 22.4inches...

Paul, I`m having a senior moment, either that or am typing so fast I`m betwixing things...

The order is:
Servis MK 72 produced 1972
Servis MK300 produced 1976
Servis MK308 produced 1978

My, where Is that dryer??? that is the dryer to match the MK300, but Servis did two earlier dryers, the first one being in 1963 called the Supa Dry, This was a Solid Full door dryer, similar to the old Burco models, all the controls where behind the full door so its looks plain from the front, the second was a model in black and white, same style as the compact, but was produced between 1966 & 1968...

AND yes I see where this is going...LOl

She's still in the basement in working order since 1982...I don't use it very often... but I care to save her bacause of many tender remebers she gives me everytime...:-))

Darren most of the collection moved on because we were moving and we just had too many machines to move with us.The collection got a bit out of hand and we could hardly move in the garage! The good news is that Chestermike got a lot of them from us so they are being looked after and preserved for years to come. The A3350 was going to be left in the house when we moved but the welding went underneath and so you could never get it balanced properly and it would vibrate too much so I took parts off it.It was a shame as the rest of the machine was in such great condition and the motor sounded like new.

Oh wow! What an fantastic set you have there mark. I think my ideal set up in my garage would be to get the logic back to heath and get the matching dryer. also get the matching dryer to my servis. The problem's i have are i desperately desperately want something new & i've been told a 3rd set is not allowed..though i've done this twice and currently have 3 lined up lol. So im really frustrated and unsure what to do. The 3rd machine is just a dead hotpoint thats awaiting to be burried. I just havent had the time or the help to skip it.

I had a conversation with a friend from the states who owns a frontloader. I said that i think frontloaders would've had a much better impression on guys stateside if they were introduced in the 80s. Because like everything they were so much better. Anyone agree?

*Sigh* y'know one day there gonna have to start making really decent machines again. Without having to pay the £500+ price. hopefully.

Can you imagine a modern square doored machine? I think the closest to it are the hoover nextras & hotpoints. Though i think a modern square door for a machine would have to be slightly curvey to fit in with modern trend.

Darren

a fantastic thread

A few questions and answers:

Hi Mike - the MK75 (silver & purple) dryer was on ebay about 2 months ago (I can't remember if it sold). When i see interesting things I put them in faves and keep an eye on them - there is an early 1980's Philips dryer up at the moment if anyone is interested - item number 260091211253 (model D163).

Hi Mark - thanks for posting the piccy o the D6008. have never properly seen this machine before and it was a gap in my hoover photo gallery - a space is now filled.
Cheers for posting the servis 209 pic as well.
Also, can you remember what the model number of the electron dryer de luxe (energy control series) was?

Small ditty on the Servis Selectronic. When I was about 10 years old, me and my family visited the Ironbridge Gorge Museum in the West Midlands (home of servis). In one of the seperate museums (they are spread over the area and combined form the Ironbridge gorge museum) there was a Selectronic sat on a shelf/plinth. I think it was possibly (for some reason) a tile museum (was definately not the main Blists museum). May still be there - has anyone else visited and seen it?

is that the compact version? it looks small and ive never seen the compact before.

My Maternal Nan has the full size dryer version still going strong from 1983!
These were the matching dryers to the Original Quartz although not computer controlled, it always looked the part stood next to the 602/3 circa 1983!

The 602/3 was going strong in 1995 or so when it was replaced with a Homark built in washer in the phase of a kitchen re fit. the dryer was kept and put in their garage.
The vent hose was never permannently plumbed in to the kitchen and was used with front vent, metal clip to connect the hose out the kitchen window.

I used to love playing with that metal clip thing along with the U syphon off the FS compartment.
Id much prefer one of these Quartz's with that black control panel, and plastic coated metal lid than the much later model Darren, Newwave1 has from 1987+.

But alas them models are rare!

Also it was great to see the Servis hose above with the 2 different shaped plastic ends..... Memories I can tell you.

just remembered to post my Nans Quartz had the silver door rim, similar panel to the Quartz Rob posted but with the red prog select LCD, the same one that can be seen in Haynes Washing Machine manual in the Electronic Programmer Chapter.

Probably still going strong somewhere too as they sold it on to some friends..... it never had a repair until they got shut of it despite having a toddler - 11 year old LOL fiddle with it weekly!

One of the things i loved about my Zanussi ZWF1440 was that when the door lock release/lock click clacked it was the same tinny noise that the Quartz Door Release mechanism made!

becuase on closer insprection and bespectacled the Original Quartz Darren and Rob posted are nothing like,

My Nan had the one with each prog option button in its own beige line coloured rectangle. Each button had its own light IIRC and then there were programme progress lights too.

Bio
Half Load
Econ?
Drip dry
Cancel which when pressed sent the machine into Drain while the drum stood still, you could do this with the door open too.

I forget the others, but anyway it was the same as they Haynes manual one.
Il look in the library for it tommorrow.

Lightly off topic...

First of all, this is a great thread! My Gran had a washing machine years ago that had a silver sloping control panel and a the same switches as the bendix near the top... i think it was that but i wanna make sure. I remember the spin cycle seemed to be a load of pulse spins. It would just keep going to 400/500 rpm then once it reached it, it would stop and do it again. Don't think this was a fault because they got a new kitchen afterwards and kept the machine for a few more years. They also had the servis Model 209 drier. My other gran had a hoover with the silver control panel from the mid 70s. Still going last i heard!

My question is my parents had a hoover set when they got married. This was early 1983... the washing machine had a round door and was probably an electron 800 spin model but the drier had a square door. I just wanted to know if anyone knew if hoover made a drier to match these machines. My mum likes sets so i don't think she would have got one if she didn't have to!

Hi Paul

Im afraid im not sure on the model number of the electron dryer.Below is a pic of the rating plate.Unfortunately its blured. Can anyone work out the model number? It looks like D4214/6?

Hey Nick

The Servis Multivent is the full size version. If you notice it dosn't have the plinth at the bottom. These were removeable if you wanted to stack the dryer on top of the washer. It made the dryer a lesser height and so easier to load and unload. The family I got the dryer from had removed the plinth as it had been stacked on the matching quartz washer. They had lost the plinth.

Hey Mike

Love that quartz! One of my dream machines yet to found.

Mark

Mike,

NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY!!!!!!!

Thats the One!!!!! Breathe Nick Breathe!!!!!!

Oh the memories.

Darren you seem to have your dates mixed up, the Quartz 600 - 603 as in Mikes pictures ran from 1980 to about 1985 or so IIRC and the later Quartz model like yours came in from 1986/7 so indeed yours is very late 80s and no older give or take a few months than your Logic.

Im sure a couple of members can vouch for my information, and my Nans Quartz was bought in 1983.
Didnt the model numbers for the early ones run with the year?
So those made in 83 would have been a 603?

Nick

Paul

Just been looking through a couple of Hoover service product data books. It may be a D6216 but in the book it dosen't mention that its a Energy control model but it does say it has the "on" light and the 4 square buttons. In the brochure showing the Energy control models along with the computer control control it does have the dryers. It seems though its before they labelled them "Energy Control". The machine in the brochure which is the reversing one is Model D6182 and instead of it saying "Energy Control Series" it just says "autosense". Im guessing the autosense turned into "Energy Control".I did after first seeing this brochure wonder where the energy control was on the dryers as it was showing off the energy control autos. You would have thought Hoover would have restyled the dryers to say energy control to match the washers.Dont understand why they did this with later models but not when they launched the range.

Hope that all makes sense.

Nick no problem. The quartz 600 is a fabulous looking machine. Its so stylish and I love everything about it.I once had the model below i think it was..the Servis slimline 1000. Nice machine aswell. And I liked the clunk when the door got released also.I had it before I knew about motor brushes.I thought it was dead so got rid of it but I know now it was just the brushes!

Grans machine...

Thanks Mike great to be here! I dunno, i don't think it was a Bendix because you can the name on the powder dispenser. Hmm... could be a philco? my uncle had a philco drier and it looked similar. Well, it was very old!

Its something i really wanna know! There is a photo with a corner of the machine in it, i'll dig it out and look for clues!! All the same i would love an old bendix anyways. Even without the square door hehe

'Big Door' bendix

Hi Mark - i think you are right re the modle number of your Hoover dryer - D6216 looks right.

Please, keep spoiling us with those big door bendix's. one of these lived at the back of the home economics room at my secondary school - give you one guess where i sat!
I was right in front of it and one thing i remember was that it was so quiet.
The stacked pair are the ones I also remember from the pub that I mention in my thread over in the other place!

That Bendix range was FAB!! My Mum 's first auto was from that range but very BOL. It had just one dial and no options or fancy features and she loved it. It had the square door and black trim and somewhere I have a photo of it. Initially she wanted the Bendix Home Laundry Centre which was a washer/dryer combo with a rear control panel. Very smart looking unit but she opted for the washer. Great to see those pictures again and what a wonderful thread!!!

Nick,
In responce to your theory of the year running alongside the model that would mean that mine is 83. as mine is a 603. Mike should be able to help with dates the man of all knowledge:p Whats the scoop mike? :p

Darren yours is a 6033 as Mike said he bought his mum the exact same machine in 1987. as his post above said.

I didnt make myself clear sorry,
im talking about the original 600 3 digit/number series,
600 was 1980
602 1982
603 1983

the 4 digit 6033 like yours came way later and at a guess im working out that its was a 603 1983 plus 3 (the 3 in years) to make it 1986

But I can assure you Darren the Quartz you have is really no more than 20 years old maximum.

Servis in 1985 and the Bendix

Here is a guide from 1985 which shows Darren's 6030. Not sure how long before this, this particular machine was made.

I absolutely love those old Bendix. They were very quiet and quite stable. It had two dials. The one of the left selected the programme and the one on the right was the timer. This was a great idea as it allowed you to start any programme at any point you wanted.

Philco......

Hey Guys

All the Uk Bendix machines above were indeed made in Italy by Philco - They were fantastic machines, super quiet induction motors, large capacity(for their time) and fantastic results.

There was an early 80s ad that illustrated how quiet they were by showing a baby sleeping sat next to a Bendix on spin LOL!!

Re: Philco

Guess the machine could be philco after all... were they realeased around here? Well, i know about the drier my uncle had, it had two knobs... one for heat and one for time. The timer was really a timer, you started the machine by selecting a heat. Bendix drier seems to have the same controls...

One of the reasons I love the Bendix 7147 so much is because it was my mums first automatic washer. Also my aunt bought the 7147 around the same time as my mum. My mums however only lasted 4 years due to me!I would switch the spin from 800 to 400 so I could then put it back on 800 and watch it speed it up again. This put a lot of stress on the drum pulley as it wouldn't slow down to 400 gradually, it would jump straight to 400 from 800.In the end all but one spoke on the pulley had broken.Instead of getting it repaired my parents chucked it!!!! My aunts however went on and on and when they moved to spain they gave it to my cousin. It was still in use up to a couple of years ago when she moved.I dont know what happened to it as im not sure if it broke or if she left it at her old house.

Hoovermatic I think I know which Bendix you mean.I don't know the model number but my best friend had one in the house he moved into in the 1980s. It was just called the Bendix Autowasher rather than de luxe and it just had one dial which was round and black I think.Still had the square door.It went with them to the next house that they moved to in 1987 but then it wasen't there long. Dont know what happened to it but a Hotpoint appeared. Electronic 1000 de luxe. Didn't have a patch on the Bendix.

Heres the pic of the 7147 and 7447 stacked.

Mark

Your right, it was called Bendix Autowasher. I remember the day it was bought from Rumbelows in Bristol. It was only a small store and they had just TWO FL's on display; a Candy and the Bendix and the Bendix won hands down as it looked and felt so sturdy. Even the door was metal as opposed to plastic. I don't think they look out of place in the 21st century. Bring 'em back please!!!

Here's another pic which might be of interest. This dates from 83 showing the classic Hoover Electron which had not long been released. This replaced the A3110 (correct me if I am wrong).

Post# 195014 , Reply# 101   3/5/2007 at 07:29 (6,260 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

That Electron is the A3294, which was an Electricity Board exclusive based upon the A3268 (I think!) - hence the 'E'. The A3268 replaced the A3190 from the very first electron series, which in turn replaced the A3110 (any errors in this timeline - please correct them).
Hoover were very busy in the early 80's.

Heres another square door and she is a cutie.....

help with a hoover

Not my piccy (come on own up), but one I saved from one of the yahoo groups.

Mark - you posting the cover of the 7142A instruction manual jogged my memory that this was a problem of mine.

Anyone have any idea what the hoover machine is in the bottom right (the model number and description hidden by the A3256 electron 800 dual spin manual).
Is it the A2044 cold fill machine? Anyone able to confirm?

There ALL Fantastic!!

But OMG!! FORALOYSIUS, the Miele 420, my favorite brand no less, is absolutely STUNNING!! I would definitely sell my husband and (almost my dog) for that machine! ;) I've never seen a full size like that by Miele.

I now have a new 'dream machine' to add to the TOP of my ever growing list. Unfortunately, this one I think really will remain just a dream. But thanks for sharing it. Oh man, just wonderful!! Thanks again!!--James

Does anyone read German?? I would love to know what the ad says about the 420. Could someone translate it for me/us? Many thanks!-- James
And maybe the Miele 505 too?? or is that asking too much? ;)

Sorry, I'm just a bit giddy in love with the 420 at the moment! Just lovely!!
