Jst got a call from my sister-in-law in Vancouver asking my opinion on the best washer to use for cleaning horse blankets. Any suggestions?

Why, a 1957 Frigidaire of course!

Cool ad, Greg...I recall seeing that ad in one of my mom's magazines when it came out...maybe 65 or 66. I had never seen a control top Frigidaire and with the lid up in that ad, I thought the back panel ran all across the cabinet. It was not until I met Robert Seger that I saw an actual control top Frigidaire and was AMAZED. It was like a washer from "The Jetsons."

Duh...it says "12-year old washer"...the ad was from 1969.

Hose the blanket down thoroughly to remove mud, hair, urine & feces. Hang over a fence to dry thoroughly. Then find a laundromat that is attended and has at least a 50# front loader. Be prepared to run the machine a second time when you are done to remove all dirt, hair and smells from the machine.

Many laundromat owners do not allow horse blankets to be washed at their estabilishments. Horse blankets are very heavy when wet, usually very smelly from urine and poop, and tend to clog the drain in the washer with mud and hair. This is why you should pick an attended laundry; if the machine has a problem, there is someone there to help you out immediately.

I can verify that I totally plugged a drain pump on a coin-op Milnor ("Load machine as full as you wish")washing horse blankets. It was a Norge coin-op dry cleaning and laundry center and I'm guessing the huge Milnor was the pride and joy of the owner. He had the first one in town and judging from how much he yelled at me as his eyes teared up, he must have become very attached to it.

EEEEEEEK!

I couldn't imagine washing horse blankets in a WI-57 or ANY vintage machine for that matter...blasphemy!

IIRC, Miele makes one or two models of washing machines that can handle horse blankets. Many other European washing machine brands probably also have models capable of dealing with horse/animal blankets and or bedding given the popularity of equestrian sports on that side of the pond.

What you want to look for is a machine with not only a large capacity, but a drain/pump system capable of dealing with large amounts of hair and muck. You'll probably want some sort of onboard heating system to have an accurate 140F or above wash cycle to insure "killing" of parasites and general laundry sanitation.

I don't know if they have them in Ireland but in the US I would try to find a used or scratch and dent Neptune. If you do, expect to clean a lot of hair out of the boot after washing, and use the stain cycle and extra rinse.

I noticed that the Frigidaire ad said to buy the washer now and if you still have it in 1981 think of how you might use it. Do you think GM knew what would happen by then?

The machine in the ad is a Deluxe model which was available with a Unimatic or Pulsamatic mechanism - the print is too small on even the original of this ad I have to tell the difference in the control markings to be sure. I can't imagine those heavy, dirty blankets getting much cleaner in those small tubs - talk about no turnover, they'd just sit and wiggle!

Here is the TOL Imperial - notice the difference in front panel design.

Hi there Ecoclean

As a horse rider I have experience of this - I installed a Whirlpool Top Loader for this purpose and it works fine for numhnahs, light machine-washable rugs and the inevitable old towels used for wiping down. Do not machine-wash heavy outdoor rugs are they are usually treated and need specialist cleaning and reproofing.

Also - mud sets in hot water, so knock off any solids and wash in cold - if you are in Ireland use should be able to find a good handwash detergent like Aerial, Persil or Dreft!

One point - the Ecoclean name would suggest you mightn't like top loaders, they are usefully fast though!

David
