Hi guys, I'm mostly a lurker, occasional poster. I need a little help with my washer. I have a 11 year old kenmore model 110.92597200 top loader. Am I correct that this is direct drive? Today it died at the start of the drain/spin cycle. It did drain but it didn't spin. It was trying to spin, I noticed a bad sound & burning rubber smell when it was supposed to be spinning. Do any of you washer experts have any idea first impression ideas of what the problem could be? Also I know someone on here knows the easy way to get this thing apart so I can have a look at it. THANKS!

Virginia

Sounds like a bad coupler; chances are it wasn't agitating either. These aren't hard to replace; I did one before on my DD before I sold it. There are directions on how to change it all over the Web.

Agitating

Well it was agitating at some point today, not sure if it quit during the agitation or the spin on this load or what. This was the 3rd load today & it worked for the first 2, thankfully I got all of our work clothes for this week washed, was down to the bed linens which I have enough clean sets to hold us for a bit. I found some info on the web, and have come to the same conclusion regarding the coupler. I have managed to get the cabinet off & I'm reading about getting at the coupler. Turns out this is a $14 part. Part of me was hoping this was going to be an expensive or difficult repair so I would have to get a new washer. I'm not too fond of this machine & would like a front loader like in my last place. Oh well I guess we'll take a crack at fixing this one first. Thanks,
Virginia

Who said you have to fix it? if you do not like your washer that much and you are good shape financially,I say go out and get the front loader.life is to short.

So many reasons

Well financially we could afford a new washer if we needed one. However, that money would be better spend elsewhere at the moment. We are trying to start a family so we are trying to avoid unnecessary spending. We probably won't be in this house for more than a couple more years. Here it's customary to leave the appliances when you sell. And also my laundry room is just too small for all of the front loaders I have looked at. So the practical thing is to fix the current machine, and this time practicality wins out. But in the next house, I'm getting my front loader!

Working again

Well we got it fixed Tuesday, it wasn't very difficult either. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad machine. It will do fine for now.

To avoid future coupler issues, don't wash blankets or other heavy items in the washer. I had to replace a coupler in my WP DD machine after only 3 years. I was washing heavy rugs and large comforters in it. Since I have been taking those down to the coin op laundry, I haven't had any further coupler issues.

Hi guys, I joined the group yesterday.

We had this exact problem with our DD Kenmore when we made the mistake of washing two heavy mats. It agitated and drained without a problem, but at times it would not spin unless you reached in and rotated the tub. At that point it would take off. And get this, it happened on it's 5th anniversary! Which of course was when the 5 year warranty expired. And if that weren't enough, we were due to move a month later, and this machine was going to be left behind, and oh, did I mention that the person who bought our house is an attorney? There were a ton of reasons I did not want us to be one of those people who left a broken washer. It worked perfectly until that point. We had the repair man from Sears look at it. He said he couldn't find a thing wrong with it, and guessed that the problem was a defective safety switch. This did not make sense to me. If that were the case I don't think it would have been able to drain or spin, since the switch needs to be triggered for both to function. He did not charge us for the visit, as the only work he did was detaching, and then reattaching the cabinet. Anyway as we progressed through that last month, it was getting increasingly better, with a few fits and starts along the way, but in our last uses of it, it was working like brand new again, spinning on its own, and getting up to full speed with the rapidity that it had since the day we got it. When we moved I was relieved to be leaving behind a washer that was in good working order.

Not the same problem

70series, what you describe is not the same thing that happened to mine. Once the coupler goes, that's it. It would not start working again on it's own. You should've seen the the old one we took out. all 3 pins were broken off on one side and one on the other. The rubber middle part was mostly gone. I don't know how it had been working at all up until it died. It must've only had 1 pin left on the one side & the last one finally broke off on Sunday when the washer would no longer agitate/spin. I don't know what the problem was with yours, I don't know much about washer repair. However, with what I learned fixing mine I am pretty sure your problem was not the coupler.

70series, your washer had the makings of a bad transmission. That's fairly common on these machines (although WP never took a beating from the general public on these like Maytag did with faulty trannies in the Performa line. I never could quite understand that)

That's the coupler doing it's job, Virginia. When the machine is overloaded, or if the transmission would lock up, the coupler would give it up, instead of jamming, and possibly ruining the motor.

Runematic:
Thank you for your diagnosis. I really had no idea what the problem was. In addition to sharing the experience, finding this out was why I posted.

Virginia:
Thank you for clarifying about the coupler. I'm happy you got your Kenmore working again.

Good Luck,
James
