Inspired by the work of MickeyD and NickUK, I made a short video of my HMDL the other day, capturing the whole wash cycle and then adding a narration of sorts. Hope it brings back fond memories for those that previously owned a Hoovermatic (and maybe it'll even help encourage you to get another!), and that everyone else enjoys it too.

Way back in like 1973ish, growing up in Connecticut, my aunt Tootsie had a harvest gold Hoover but it wasn't a twin tub like you have. Hers was just a single tub, tall and had a wringer on top. I remember thinking 'it must take her all day to do the wash like that..fill the tub, wring the clothes, drain the machine, fill it back up, rinse the clothes, wring the clothes, drain, fill add soap, wash...." At least you have a spinner on yours so you can at least be spinning the clothes while you drain the machine and fill with rinse water. I wish I could find one around here in California, but except for the one my aunt had, I've never seen another one. Fabric conditioner rinsing...

 Good video, Simon.

I noticed another video on Youtube, by Hoover3060; featuring fabric softner rinsing in the washtub. A far as I know, the method of using fabric softner was to add a capful to a basin/washing-up bowl, add water and tip it over the clothes in the spinner, then activate the spinner to spin it down the drain.

Yes the most common way is to do as you said with filling a bowl of water and adding conditioner then pouring over the wash load.The other way you can on de luxe models is pour the conditioner into the running rinse water going into the spinner.I just choose to sometimes fill the wash tub up with water and conditioner and do it that way.Its of course more time consuming.Everyone just does it different ways I guess. I do as mentioned in another thread also put things into a front loader and give them their conditioning rinse and final spin that way.

I used to give everything three auto rinses in plain water and then run everything through the wash tub once with softener. It worked for me as I found that pouring it in the spinner resulted in most of it running out through the holes, unlike a Hotpoint or the Philips Top Twin which didn't have all those holes like the HMDL
