Ok, I know I read somewhere that there's a trick you can do to a maytag washer that'll keep filling the tub with the lid up except I don't remember what it is!

Press in on the plastic button behind the lid, on models before 2000 and after that, use a table knife to push through the slot and then use a slight upward motion to make the plastic switch activate. Of course you can open the console and by pass the safety switch wiring.
