Never realized they offered a panel light on their dial models...thought it was just the TOL electronic version which I remember seeing at Sears when I was 10 and want BADLY.

This was the same seller whom I bought the 1981 24" Kenmore from, BTW. Ironically enough, he has the matching dryer currently for sale! No, I'm not interested in it...

Amana went off and on with the light. It was standard on the TOL models and was an accesory on select other models from about the mid 90's to around 2000.

I remember those Amana washers I wish they would have kept the console light. What a good concept.

seriously, what's the deal with the light. seems like a gimick to me. with a TL washer the lid is up, blocking the light. what is the point?

Lighted-console Maytags also are blocked by the lid, but nobody seems to complain about that! :-)

I'd sure like this Amana, but fetching it would be problematical.

Lighted control panels were always a sign of the more deluxe appliances in the 1950s and into the 1960s and later for some brands. Originally, many washers and dryers were located in not so well lighted basements so the lights were a help to the user. GE even sold fluorescent light hoods that could be mounted on top of the control panels of their washers and dryers in the early mid fifties. Kitchen lighting was often poor as well so lights on ranges were used on more deluxe models.

This poor eBay seller does not know the difference between fluorescent and halogen.

Fluorescent lighting of control panels, especially when the light is within the panel, not only illuminating the appliance, but shining through the panel to backlight or shine through the labeling of the dial areas is the mark of a highly styled appliance. Add lenses that change the color of the light for different settings and you cannot ask for anything more grand. Life just does not get much better than when lighted control panels signal that wonderful appliances are awake, animated and ready to be admired and have fun with us as they perform.

My parents had a 63' Fridgidaire Custom Imperial W/D set in their laundry room. They had a very generous sized lighted control panel on the machines. The laundry room was in a in a small hall leading to the door to the garage. They would leave the appliance lights on whenever any of us kids were out late so we wouldn't fumble in the dark upon coming home.
They also had a "flair type" of stove in the kitchen with the area behind the burners having a large lighted area. They used that as a night light. I think it was a Kenmore.
I always had a thing for illuminated control panels. I wish they would come back into fashion again! I think they add a touch of class to your appliances.

A benchmark of Success

 Tom hits the nail on the head. I am surprised how deeply marked I am from a childhood of extreme poverty. Appliances and especially the lighted ones spoke of wealth and success and screamed, "Because I can". That said, throughout my adult life I would get up at night and wander through the kitchen lighted by the lamp on the Frigidaire range or the laundry room which glowed from the Maytag and I would smile inwardly because, I had arrived!
