Too bad...

Sometime last year, Robert posted a message about a pink Multimatic set in Canada, from 1960-62. Can't remember the exact year. Despite all of the posts I previously saw about people wanting old Frigidaire sets, etc., it seemed when one DID pop up and it came time for them to lift a finger to GET that particular machine or set, they disappeared. No one contacted the owners, and they ended up getting Krushed.

The same happened with a 1950's ABC-O-Matic in New York, exactly a year ago. No one expressed any interest in it, and it got Krushed as well.

Thanks Austin

My request for a 1960 Frigidaire Custom Imperial set was JUST BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION LAST WEEK. A friend of mine wants the set not me. The friend is willing to pay for the pair and wants to start a collection with the 1960 pair. If I had known about the desire for the machines earlier and if it was the right year I'm sure my friend would have saved the machines from the crusher. I check this site and read the discuss-o-mat postings if not daily but sometimes twice a day. I resent the remark Too Bad and your implication (tough luck) that some of us sit on our ass and don't lift a finger. A year ago thanks to Laundress's posting of 3 washers and dryers on E bay, someone else here pointed out to me that a 1964 Frigidaire dryer which I wanted was pictured in the backgrond in the E Bay photo. I got the Frigidaire dryer for 100 dollars rather then spending 100 dollars for the three units and spent 420 dollars to have the Frigidaire shipped from Fort Worth to Denver. So I guess I was able to lift my finger.

I think that there are many here that would love to collect vintage appliances, but they are just not able to do so. Lack of space to store/keep them, lack of support from their "other half", perhaps not being able to find replacement parts, the time to restore them,or not being able to service the machines themselves are some of the reasons that some don't "go for it" when vintage machines do turn up.

Those that cannot collect still have an interest in vintage appliances, otherwise they would not be here at all.

Elitist club? Not hardly! I've met and made friends worldwide, and locally through this club. I sell used appliances as a sideline, don't really have a collection per se. If I find something vintage, a picture of it usually appears here, and it's offered to those who frequent this site. Many a washer and dryer that would have been scrapped have gone to people here that appreciate vintage machines. For not much money.

Sometimes vintage machines go by the wayside because the local collectors don't want them, have no place for them, or the owners want outrageous money for them. As much as we'd like to, they all can't be saved.

I don't think it's elitist either

I KNOW what elitism in 'clubs' is like, and Applianceville is DEFINITELY not one of them. I think Applianceville is a great community where we share a common interest, and many of us have met each other in person and are good friends. As I stated before, it was definitely a positive environment in Tucson, and that says a lot. Rick, you bring up an excellent point, and that is what I also enjoy about being here. One doesn't have to have a collection to be a part of this (again) great community; they are welcomed with open arms and fit in with everyone else. No one is looked down upon because they either don't collect or have a limited collection.

What I WAS pointing out are those who constantly whine about "I want this, I want that," or post their own classifieds here ("I'm looking for such-and-such machine, where can I find one?"), then when that particular machine DOES arise, sometimes for free, all of a sudden they don't seem *that* interested anymore and disappear from the forum completely. The machine in question then ends up getting Krushed. I'm sorry if anyone is offended, but when something desirable ends up not getting saved, it irritates the hell out of me, and yes, this isn't the first time I've voiced my opinion on the matter. Down here in the Land of Rust, vintage appliances (much less free ones) are in fact few and far between, and out of all the machines I found locally in Texas, only one was free (the GE Combo). All others I've had to pay for. I'm not complaining by any means, but the point I'm trying to get across is that there aren't always great freebies popping up all of the time like I've seen in other locations.

Good points Austin, but remember how costly shipping these items can be. Some may not be able to "swing it" when the item shows up half way across the country, and has to be "gone" within a few days. Perhaps they just had a large car repair bill, put a new roof on the house, or have a couple kids in college. Maybe they just cannot justify spending that much to transport an item that they can easily do without. Most people already have working appliances in their home. It's sort of like having a vintage car. Most everyone likes to admire them/ride/drive them, but they don't really want the commitment of owning one. And thats cool.

Couple other things to remember about that pink set in Michigan that went to the crusher. It was a BOL set, and it was a Multitragic washer. Am sure if that washer had been a Unimatic, or an Imperial set many people here would have been "on them" including myself. <:

Hi James, I think the Multimatic was used from 1959 until about 1964. The Multimatic was not as reliable as the previous Unimatic series, so I call them Multitragic.

Any who worked on them ;-)

The Multi-Tragic name was born from seemingly endless hours of work on my 1959 - the first of the mechanism and probably the worst. The Multi-matic mechanism wasn't the worst ever, but they had lots of problems with the Rapidry spin shifting clutch and by late 1962, it was removed completely from the line bringing the max spin speed down from 850 RPM to 710 RPM. In 1964 when the Rollermatic mechanism was introduced, it was interchangeable with the multimatic machines so it could replace a troublesome mechanism in an earlier washer. I like to think there was a great sigh of relief when service techs got this revelation from Frigidaire.

Thanks Rick and gansky1

for the info..but now I think you have crushed my dream machines...the (once?)Fabulous 1962 Frigidaire Custom Imperial WCI-62 & DCI-62 Set!
Say it isn't so, that these gorgeous machines are Multitragic's?!
Not that I know anything about them, other then I love they way they look. Do they have the three ring or jet cone? Solid tub or the one with holes in it?
So if these aren't my dream machines any more..What was a good reliable year/model?
Thanks guys!--James

Oh now - don't give up your dream machines! Those years are some of Frigidaire's most beautiful designs, those angled panels are just stunning all lit up.

Aren't they just awesome?!

I thought I might have struck gold and found a 1962 Custom Imperial WCI-62 & DCI-62 set for sale as I stumbled across a website via a link a member had on here and they had several Frigidaire's for sale. I sent them a couple of emails but they never responded...they said they had other Frigidaire parts for sale too and I was hoping to order some stuff.
Thanks for the help gansky.--James
