Dear All

It has taken a while to do and needs a bit more doing to it, but i have finally put together a UK vintage washing machine web site, which you can view at the link below.

www.laundra-mat.net...

I want to develope the web site more, by adding clips of machines, as and when time lets me, and upload literature which i have. This project has taken about a year to do on and off, but if you have anything you wish to add then please advise and i am open to any suggestions or if there is anything you want to see in more detail.

I think this is the only vintage washing machine web site of its kind in the UK, and will be interesting to see its response.

Regards

Keith Blanchard (keymatic)

Yeah, excellent site, cool design, tons of useful info. Only thing I'd add is, can you get those video clips into Quicktime format? I don't have anything that will translate .wmv files (any other Mac users out there have a suggestion for that?).

It would be interesting to have a complete timeline that shows the overlap of all of the various models' years of production. Similar timelines could be created for other countries' machines, for example we have the resources on this site to do it for American machines.

Then we could compare timelines and histories between countries. This kind of exercise can produce some very interesting insights into the evolution of technologies in each country and among countries internationally.

Designgeek, you can download the "Windows Media Player" for the Macintosh at Microsoft.com and play wmv videos with ease on your Mac.

Interesting Thought ...

I'm trying to think back to the 1960's / 1970's when I was growing up and I can't quite remember if, in America, we had TV commercials that specifically advertised washing machines in use. I remember ads for other products ... like Calgon "My husband, some hotshot ..." using a GE, etc., but not like in these ads (the Hotpoint wringer washer, for example). Were we "closeted" for washing machine usage? Heaven forbid!!

Maybe I should refresh my memory and go back in this website's TV commercial area.

Unimatic: thanks, I feel like an idiot for not having thought of that:-).

Re. no action-shots in USA commercials: Somehow I doubt that there weren't any whatsoever. Any manufacturer with a new idea would have benefited from showing it in motion on the telly.

Here's a wild idea for a video. Get one of those tiny security-type cameras, seal it inside a waterproof clear plastic container with a weight inside for neutral density relative to water, put a long enough lead on it that it can move around in the water, and drop it in with the rest of the load, and a decent spotlight on the tub. What you'd get is a "clothes'-eye-view" of the washing action. Or you'd get seasick watching it:-)

There were plenty of "action shots" in vintage American washer commercials, just go into our video library and look at the Frigidaire commercials or some of the detergent commercials. I have some new 1956 Whirlpool commercials that show both Normal and the new "Gentle" speed agitation.

Robert ... you're right, but ...

Robert ... I agree, there are a lot of action shots for vintage American washers ... in the 1950's! What about the 1960's, 1970's? Can you remember some?

I keep trying to wrack my brain to come up with some and I can't seem to do it.

In the 1950's, automatic washing was still considered somewhat "new", don't you think? More unique ...

Maybe I'm nuts ... :-)

Hi Geoff, I think after 1964 advertising for washing machines and appliances in general went into a huge decline, at least the number of ads. The US started to become a very different place in 1965 and priorities had begun to change.

Of course there was that very famous (at least famous in Applianceville) mid 70's GM Frigidaire commercial showing the Jet-Action Frigidaire up against Kenmore's new Dual-Action Agitator. I would love to find a copy of this commercial and digitize it for the site. If anyone has a copy of this commercial please let me know.

Hi Robert ... I think you're right. I remember the ad for the "new, dual-action agitator" from Sears, but I don't remember the Frigidaire compared to it. Bet if I saw it, I would remember.

Have you seen the new Oxy-Clean commercial? He is using a plexiglass tub on a counter and it has an agitator moving the clothing. The agitator looks like the old Surgilator from Whirlpool, except it's white. It is agitating very slowly, however.
