That's the set we had before we bought our WP Electonic set. We had the electric dryer.
They were reliable and we never had any problems with them. But I just thought they were soooo boring!
A freind of ours has the set one generation earlier than these (1981) and they are still running with never a problem at all! He said they will keep them until they fall apart, which may not be for a long, long time!

I probably should qualify why I thought

... that they were boring machines.

I really do like Maytag for the former reliability of them. What I didn't like about these was the smallish openings in the washer and the dryer. I also preferred a drop down door on the dryer. The wash action was a bit too mild for me, I am much happier with the WP shredder with it's very splashy action.
But then again when I bought these, I didn't know as much about washers as I do now (thanks to you guys!). If there had been a aw.org back in 1993, I probably would still have this Maytag set!

That's a 12-series machine, made until around 1988 with the introduction of the Orbital transmission...one of the last 63 OPM models. Personally I don't care for the control panel; if the timer has to be on the right, I'd take the panel with the ivory-colored buttons and timer dial.

I dont know. A smallish opening has its merits.

I used to think that too until today's Shred-mores came out.
And to think the agitation speed was doubled ostensibly to keep the upper part of the cruel-action agitator moving nearly constantly.

Thank you Steve R, a/k/a Gyrafoam, from whom I had first heard this.

I had a similar washer as this but with two speeds(buttons) and finally got rid of it. The water valve dribbled, the rest of the machine was mint. The tub and agitator shined like new. There was an energy guide sticker inside when I found it for a PAV series Maytag (plastic tub NorgeTag) and I couldn't help but wonder if the lady ever wished she'd kept the old machine.
