Went to an estate sale for an eighty year old woman who went to a nursing home. Went down the basement and found these beauties. The basement was one of those old dark, dank, musty basements you see in horror movies that everyone seems to go down to when they hear a noise in the middle of the night. The people running the sale told me both worked and the woman was using them until she was sent to the home. Yah, sure!!! Anyway, I couldn't test them because the wiring in the home was so bad that everytime someone tested out something electrical while we were there the circuit breaker in the house would trip and all the lights would go out. In fact in happened while we were there in the basement------- felt like Jason was going to come around the corner.
The stairs out of the basement were the old open wooden kind with no back and no railings and very steep. How the old lady didn't fall on these stairs and break her neck I'll never know.
The washer was one of the heaviest that I've moved so far. It must have weighed a ton. It took three of us to haul it up the stairs. Of course we're trying to do this while the estate sale was going on. And of course it was Saturday and very busy. And of course at that precise time all 100 people that were upstairs decided to come downstairs to the basement. Anyway, once we got to the landing we had to make two 90 degree turns to get the set out the back door. It was so tight that we couldn't manuever them with the dolly on so I got the bright idea to take them off the dolly and put a throw rug under them. That way we could slide them on the linoleum and make the turns---- worked like a charm.
Half hour later, finally got them outside and on the truck. After 40 years in that basement the Ladies finally got to see the light of day.

What do we have here?
Why it's a measuring cup that fits over the agitator cap------ how convenient. Even has quarter cup incremental markings. Those Lady people think of everything to make the housewife's job just a little bit better.

ROTO-SWIRL with scrubber cap
Six fins of fun !!!
Looks a little phallic. Those engineers must have been thinking about the lady of the house again.

Control panel.
This is the model that you select the cycle that you want and any options by pushing the buttons. Then you turn the large cycle knob until it stops and clicks in place. Then you push the cycle knob in and the machine starts. Wash time, wash/rinse temp, wash/spin speed, etc. are all automatic. There is also a button for "selective dialing" so you can manually control the machine.
It also has 3 speeds----- normal, slow, and ext slow.
And suds-saver.

Dryer interior.
The interior looks brand new. No rust or scratches. I think she hardly used it.
Note the large electronic sensor strip

Post# 209813 , Reply# 14   5/13/2007 at 07:20 (6,190 days old) by fridgiman ()

Well, plugged her in and got the Lady all hooked-up. I got her to spin so I know she works. However, when I went to start a cycle something strange happened. The control panel light would only go on when I pushed the second rinse button. So maybe a short.
When I started the cycle it didn't do anything but humm. I tracked down the humm to the valve. No water comming into the tub-- nothing! Just the valve buzzing. I think the valve needs replacing. So I'm off to find a replacement.
Will keep you all updated as things with the Lady progress.
Jim

Nice find! I love TOL washers and dryers you never have restrictions with TOL!!
Coppertone is the best vintage color I like it better than pink or turquoise. It reminds me of Root Beer.

Congrats to you and handsome Lou for hauling those up from oblivion. I know what that is like!
Last weekend Greg & Steve and I did the same thing with that 400 pound Combo and at the top of the stairs there was only 1/2 inch clearance.
Clever idea the rug trick , I've used that before. Its amazing how a simple rug can beat out a nice steel handtruck sometimes.
But when its an addiction -its NEVER a problem and there is always room --right??

Great LK set! That skirtless/baseless agitator looks so alien. Has there ever been another one like it in any brand? We moved in 1967 and my parents bought coppertone Kenmores for the kitchen. Always liked the color. Congrats!

heat selection

MY mom had those machines, only in avacado. The heat selection was automatic...coming on high, and then gently tapering off as the load dried. Sears called it "Soft Heat". It worked great and you only had to choose the dryness level. That was controlled by the dial on the console.

Wow, another great Kenmore find!

Congratulations Jim, what awesome machines, looks like they've cleaned up quite nicely as well, and with the baseless Roto-Flex no less! You'll have hours of fun with that.

Approximately what year are these, and was the Roto-Flex offered for more than one year? Someone told me it was 1965 only, but these panels look newer. Enlighten me, please!

Austin

Thanks everyone !

1. The buttons on the dryer are only "heat", "no heat", and "start". The dial controls the dryness level.

2. The model number is S-6605902C. I'm guessing by the first two digits that it's a 1966 model.

3. Yes, I also hope that I can get it up and running with a minimum of fuss.

Wow, this is interesting, where is the enzyme soak or cold rinse? Maybe this one is more "top of the line" than mine?

These are my dream Kennies. I actually had the washer (in white) around 1980 or so, but the dryer never surfaced- it seems that many LK customers got an attack of budgetitis when it came time to choose a dryer and bought a 700 or something. So I never did complete the pair.

One of my high school teachers used to borrow her folks' house for student get-togethers (like cast parties for school plays- Mrs. Givens was our drama teacher), and her mom had this identical coppertone pair in a very snazzy kitchen with plaid wallpaper. The coppertone went with the plaid perfectly.

The mention of the aqua pair makes Baby drool. That is my dream colour for this pair.

As Bugs Bunny would say! *LOL*

Neat save and a wonderful find!

Had sort of the same problem when I went to pick up my portable Whirlpool dryer. Poor me assumed how heavy a portable dryer could be, boy was I wrong! Complicating matters was like your situation, the stairs were narrow, made of wood, and all in all not to sturdy. Makes one wonder how they get things down there in the first place!

Steven, 1966 was too early for the enzyme soak cycle. Back in 1966 one didn't worry about a cold rinse option for cottons cycles. Alays warm, me thinks. I think I see a cold water wash button though.

You hit a grand slam, Jim!

mickeyd's profile picture
1st base- Lady Kenmore
2nd base- Coppertone
3rd base- Roto flex
and the Slam--SUDS RETURN YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAY--ALL THE WAY HOME !!!

The roto flex is so rare and elusive; no one would part with it, but if someone would loan it out for a week, --we still don't know which members have one--I could make a video showing its action from an empty tub all the way to full, using the Visi-matic, with the roto constantly flexing through out the whole fill

Congratulations, Frigman Jim. You and Lou will be so happy. It's a dream machine for me too. I once rented a place called the Fleckenschteen with an Avacado Lady, but yours is the VERY FIRST machine I've seen with a suds-return. Never knew they made them. So lucky. Good for you.

Mike

Great Set

I used this machine for a year 1993/1994. It was in a house I rented when I returned to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo after completing my Ph.D.

Great machine with a great sound. With really big loads it started slowly and eventually got up to speed during the wash.

It was one of my favorite machines to have ever used.

1966-67 Coppertone Lady Kenmore Washer & Dryer Set

"Fridgiman"

Congrats on a wonderful find. That is a beautiful LK set. The "coppertone" color makes them looks just elegant. My great aunt on my father's side (my grandmother's sister) had that EXACT washer (only hers was white) from either 1966 or 1967 until it finally gave out in the mid 1980's. I even had the priviledge of using it a couple of times when she did have it. The push buttons and click-stop dial system invited creativity. But now, if that machine would've had the Vari-Flex agitator just like the 1969-73 Ladys did, then the cycles you could create with that thing would've been limitless (that is, if you combine a Vari-Flex agitator with a 3 speed motor and a 10 cycle base selection).

Speeds, water temperatures and cycle times were automatically selected by the machine after you chose the cycle and any options. And that thing was quiet like a Maytag too.

Loved that machine....... too bad my parents couldn't afford one back then.

Fridgiman, let us know when you have those beauties up and running. That's one of my dream sets too.

--Charles (the self proclaimed "Kenmoretorian")--
