My parents' old Kenmore washer (model: 110.72891610, bought in 1977) used to make these really funky sounds that I'm just curious to see that anyone can really identify.

A.) Why did the dual action agitator make such a horrible racket? Mechanically, I know why, but I'm just curious as to know if that was the first model of DA agitator? Every model since has been quieter, I've noticed.

B.) Whenever the motor was running, there was always this rhythmic "hissing" sound that would be present-I want to say it's the transmission, but that doesn't sound right because it made its own unique noise-sort of a very quiet "loose racket"...

Thanx!

DA racket

The early DA agitators had large "steps" on the one way cog that drove the corkscrew and made a lot of "ratcheting" noise. Later versions and replacment agitators had much smaller steps and were virtually silent
