Hi all... I just found this site! (Google is my friend)

I have disassembled mo-in-law's Avocado Green Maytag Model A606. It halted one day and filled the basement with burning-belt smoke. Problem is top agitator shaft froze to upper bushing inside transmission. Water leaked down into transmission and turned the oil into rusty-brown goo, but internal gears are ok except for minor rust. RepairClinic.com has most what I need except for the O/S (Old Style?) transmission internal parts - the one with the curved steel counterweight hanging out in space. I need the upper agitator shaft with rubber collar, and bronze bushings, and the upper and lower shafts seals. Anyone know where to find such parts? As an alternative, is the 22002126 transmission a functional replacement fit (and is this ReplairClinic Part# 454875)? I'd like to fix it but don't want to spend a fortune. Thanks! --CB

Maybe find another washer, and swap transmissions. That style Maytag is still plentiful.

It is referred to as a Helical drive transmission. Best bet is actually as mentioned above. Find another Helical Drive machine. It does not have to be an A606, any that have the same tub size will have the same transmission. Change out the whole thing.

AND, by the way, welcome to the site.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome!

I assume "helical drive" comes from the helix at the bottom.

Now... down to brass tacks. Is the apparently-newer 22002126 transmission a "drop-in" replacement in an A606? One is on a current eBay auction (item# 150129909401), and from its pic it appears to have the correct top and bottom ends and is about right length. Says it '...fits almost all "LAT" model(s)'. And RepairClinic has what appears to be the same pic as a replacement. What is this one called?

Also: The tranny bottom shaft gear is plastic, and has many surface fractures - altho it is still in one piece with all its teeth. I hate plastic gears {reminds me of a '73 Dodge Polara camshaft gear that went south}. Is a replacement available?

'Aberdeen' looks like a nice place to "kick around" for an afteroon. Scotland is a bit far, and even MD. Where is it?

That's an orbital tranny for a later dependable care maytag. It has short stroke agitation Vs. the long stroke of your helical. It may fit but I don't think so. Maytag experts chime in here.
