Hello everyone, i am new to this site came across it, by chance on the net looking up new washers and dryers, My name is Lee 28 yrs old From Atlanta Ga, originaly now i live in Naples italy, getting used to it over here totaly differet ballpark than the states, anyway..
My question is i am looking to buy a new washer and dryer set (American Style) as i am not at all impressed with the european models, there too samll, capacity wise and take for EVERRRR!!! to do a load. There are companies that import the American style W/D's over here but there outrageous in price, and the selection is not that great, the only two i have found are Whirlpool and Maytag, now calle Whirltags, there is also a Speed queen dealer here. I was wandering what ya'll suggested me to do, should i buy over here and get raped on the price tag, or should i buy an electricly converted model from the states and have it shiped over here to me? Some input from the experts like ya'll would greatly help. Thanks a million
Lee:-)

Depends on how long you're going

to be there. If you're there for good, get a Miele set! I have actually used a Miele, and they are very very good.

More than a year, less than two, just go coin-op.

Just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

Re: Weigh the Price Difference:

Hi! Lee, how much difference would there be between your buying lets say a Whirlpool Set there, as opposed to buying a similar Whirlpool Set in the USA and getting the Electrical Convertor and having them Shipped to you in Italy?

I don't know if the Quaility will be as good or better there, as opposed to in the UK, but I've got a Friend in Northern Ireland who has had a Whirlpool Washer now for around 17-years and he told me as long as he does the Laundry and doesn't allow his Mum to do it and Overloading the Washer, he's totally satisfied with his Whirlpool Washer and it is still operating to this Day without any Repairs, other than replacing the Hoses.

If it isn't going to be much difference, what would be in your opinion the difference from doing one over the other?

Good Luck with whichever you do end up doing, please keep us informed as to which way you decide to go.

Peace and Great Laundry Cleaning, with Whirlpool's, Steve

Thank's for your input

I want to thank you for yall's input the price over here for an american made whirlpool goes for about 1500.00 dollars for the washer and about 1300.00 for a gas dryer, that to me is outrageous, to answer maytagbear i am planning on being here for a while and miele is hard to find in italy, and coinop is not that popular. To answer Sacto Teddy Bear, the quality is the same for the american style washers and dryers, the european model whirlpools i havent a clue about thier quality, Also Sacto i was wondering if i did but a non electriclly converted model, say from sears and use it with a transformer would it run properly? I have found companies on the net that sell the 220 volt model american whirlpool's and speed queen's for a fraction of the price, but i am not shure abot the shipping to italy, I really cant decide what to do i know i want an american style set jut cant decide as to buying over here or buying in the states and having it shipped. Thank guys Lee :-)

What if

If Italy is 230V 50hz, why not look at importing a US style machine from AU or the UK. That way there is no conversion required.

I think you'll find, with the cost of shipping however, that $1500 is a steal.

What is your hotwater pressure like? Do you have a mains pressure tank or Gravity feed? If its gravity feed, it'll take quite a while to fill a TL washer with hotwater.

Thanks for all your advice

Brisnat81 yeah our hot water pressure is very strong, it's sent from the mains tank to a gas boiler then to the faucets, And yes italy is 23/240v 50hz i have looked into buying one from the UK, I think that would be the best thing for me to do, i can pick up a speed quuen set for about 1300.00 Euros about 1700.00 including shipping, plus i get a 3 year parts and labor warranty from speed queen. Thank's guys for helping me make my decision. Lee :-)

230 V Speed Queen

Lee, before buying the 230V/50Hz Speed Queen TL washer check the number of speeds of the motor. A couple of years ago I advised a friend of mine to buy the locally sold 230 V Speed Queen set (TL washer and gas dryer) and the washer turned up to be a 1 speed unit. The "gentle" cycle is no gentle at all, it is just a shortened regular cycle with high speed agitation and high speed spin. Likewise for the Permanent Press cycle, it has a high speed spin. Furthermore, the washer is slow fill, which is a real PITA. Otherwise, the set is good.
