I would like to see what you guys think about the Maytag Neptune washer. I have posted before about how I just got a new top of the line Whirlpool tl washer and dryer. I really don't like them. Both are very noisy. I had a Maytag washer and dryer that I had for 34 years and both were still working. Even the lights on the back panels still worked. The Neptune is the only Maytag that looks like something from the "real" Maytag company. I have seen mixed reviews on the Neptune. My brother and his wife have had theirs for about 2 years with no trouble. Also have an older friend that has had hers for several years with no problems but have another friend that has had several problems with theirs. Do you think they have worked any of the bugs out of the machines by now?

it's honestly hit or miss.
My aunts have a Neptune set from 1998 and they had a door latch, wax motor and rear bearing failure all under warranty. Since then, it's been running great.
You have no worries about the dryer. It's their same dryer design right after "halo of heat."

I use the Neptune washers at the commercial laundromat and they're wonderful.
Someday, i'd actually like to find a used Neptune set for myself when the day comes.

Just my opinion....

The Neptune washer was rushed to market a year, year and a half too soon.

If Maytag could have done that much more field testing, and done something about the wax motors, for one painful example, it would have been a world class washer. It is still a nicely designed machine, except for the notable (to us) lack of a door window.

I wanted one, in 1997, but I decided to go with the Dependable Care top loader, and I am very glad I did.

Take it back (the whirlpool)

spankomatic's profile picture
I had 1998 Neptune washer and dryer. I did have some problems with the wax motor door locks and motor control circuit board. Both replaced under warranty. No problems with the dryer at all. In 2004 I decided to get something new and sold them to my brother. To this day he still has them and working fine.

I then went to Sears and purchased the Kenmore Elite front loader and matching dryer. Kenmore/Whirlpool almost the same thing. I hated them! Your right! They are very noisy! The washer shook the entire house at high speed spins.(Machine was level) It seemed to have very little water in it when going through the cycle. I did not care for the pull out drawer soap dispencer. Trying to pour bleach in the little tiny square you have to have really good aim and very steady arm. The dryer also did not care for. Always had this hum to it,did not like the lint filter, and realy did not like the cool down cycle. The dryer goes into tumble on/off for cool down. What is the point if the clothes are still hot sitting in the dryer WAITING for the next tumble?

After 6 month with the Kenmore's I decided to take them back. Sears was really good about the return (full credit) I then purchased another Maytag Neptune washer and dryer. I love them. Much more user friendly. The washer is very quiet and it is much easier to get the soap in with the soap dispencer on the top of the machine. No drawer! The dryer is also very quiet, drys clothes really well and fast too. The lint filter is much easier to pull out. The cool down cycle is much better, continuous for the first 10 min, then after the clothes are cool will going into on/off tumbling. I have had no problems at all with my 2004 Neptunes.

Maytag Neptune washer and dryer

Thanks for your comments. I took the plung and ordered the washer and matching naptune dryer. I think I will keep the new Whirlpool set just in case I end up with problems with the Maytags. I will give you an update after I get the Neptunes.

Pleased with the Neptunes

I have owned Neptunes since 2001. No problems at all. They perform well and efficiently. The water here is hard so sudsing is not an issue with any detergent period. The only down side of the Maytag is that there is no window. Makes the machine somewhat boring.

Regardless, if you are thinking of getting a Neptune, do it soon. WP is closing the plant that manufactures them in October. While parts will be around for a long while to come to support both the domestic and commercial market, new machines will soon be gone...

The current Neptunes are made by Whirpool's daughter company(Bauchnect)in Germany. They are now called the Epic and are replacing the KitchenAid line(Ensomble)of front loaders which Whirlpool has gone 100% professional on.I have that model by KitcheAid and let me tell you,it has been one of the best performing front loading washers I have ever owned. It is very quiet, very efficient, saves water and cleaning aids,Easy to operate and holds tons of laundry.Fun to watch and I went and placed string lights inside the outer and inner door windows! They make it so neat to watch especialy at night. As far as shaking and noisy are concerned, the manufacturers tell you in the use and care instalation books they do not recomend placing their front loaders on any floor above the first or basement. The weight of the wet clothes combined with the rpm the machine is spinning whrether it is level or not will cause serious vibrations because the floors it is on are just not strong enough unless they have a concrete base underneath. No matter what you do,it just won't work.

Laundromat, the current Neptunes are still made in Newton, IA., like PeterH770 stated above. You are correct about the Epics, though, for now. But from what I've been told by WP, some of the newer Epic/Duet/etc production will be moving into a new factory under construction in good ol' Mexico.

back to the Neptune

The last of the domestic Neptunes are mechanically the same as the ones sold to the coin-op market. They are still American made for now, quite sturdy, reliable and functionally robust. It seems for each naysayer out there, there are plenty of satisfied users, including laundromat owners.

Go for it while you can.

maytag neptune washer and dryers

Thanks again for all your help. I was told the same thing by the sales rep. The neptunes are still made in Newton but maybe not for much longer. He laughed and said they are still a "real" Maytag. That is the only reason I went ahead and ordered the washer and dryer. They told me they should arrive next friday or saturday. I know NOTHING about front load washers so I will need to check this website to get some answers about loading, soaps and proper care of the machine. I was wondering if it is better to get the extended service contract from Maytag or my retailer? I called a friend today and she has had her Neptune for over 5 years with no problems. I hope I get a good one too!

soap

Stock up on some HE detergent before the machine arrives, and give away any non-HE detergent that you may have. Non-HE detergent can ruin your front loader over time. HE detergents that were rated highly by Consumer Reports include Tide HE, Kirkland (Costco) HE, Gain HE, and Method HE. Most likely some of the posters here have their own favorites. I am using up a bottle of All Free Clear HE and it seems to work fine, gets clothes clean without oversudsing.

Depends on your water and washing habits, which of course will change with the frontloader. You may be able to get good results without resorting to an HE detergent.

Maytag Neptune washer and dryer

The new Maytag Neptune washer and dryer are to be installed sometime between 8am and 12 Thursday July 5th, They actually came in early. I will sure let you guys know what I think after they arrive. I will be getting them installed 33 years almost to the day I bought my first Maytag "806"pair and they are still working perfectly at the old house. Even the lights work in the washer tub, dryer drum and the lights on the backsplash. I would say that is pretty good service!

maytag neptune washer and dryer

They installed my Maytag Neptune washer and dryer today. I was quite shocked at how much heavier they were than the new Whirlpools they replaced. The washer is so quiet I can't believe it's washing and it removed a surprising amount of water in the spin dry. I am going to do SOMETHING with the new Whirlpools but I am going to keep my old Maytag 806 washer and dryer which are at my old house and being used every week. They still work perfectly after 33 years. I am a little confused about the bleach issue. My sister-in-law uses bleach once a week in her Neptunes and the instruction book tells you to run a cyle with bleach every 30 days but the automaticwasher forum said that bleach is not good for a front load washer. I will need to investigate this isse.
I can hardly wait to put the second load in the Neptunes!

of production the MAH 3000 models and have never had one problem with them. From what I have gleaned in reading those first machines made in the first 6 months of production just run and run and run!
I really like my washer. The dryer is good too but no one makes a dryer as well as WP!

Our Local Maytag dealer has the Amana badged washer and dryer.

maytag neptune washer and dryer

Hey guys
I was trying the new washer and dryer out this evening and counted 14 lights between the washer and dryer. It looks cool at night when the laundry room is dark. This is a very different washer and is so quiet. I can only hear the sloshing of the water as the clothes drop into the suds and I love the sound of the machine when I used the max extract. Sounds like a jet engine reving up.

I've had the MAH 4000 series since 4/8/99. Despite it's bad press, it's been working flawlessly. As for the washer, the only noises are the clothes splashing in the water and the high spinning in the last spin cycle. And it does a real warm/hot wash that stays that temperature for each load. The dryer, although a rattle trap sometimes, gets clothes dried in one pass and we have the option of turning off the Press care cycle on the Permanent press.

Last year, we moved to Boston, we left the machines behind for the renters to use. We used the Kenmore 80 series washer and the "Elite" Dryer. Boy I'm so glad to be back to the Neptunes. The washer located upstairs was so loud, you can hear as far away as the living room or the office downstairs. It didn't have the "Anti-unbalancing technology", so you had to strategically load jeans in properly or it would shake the entire house. And it had Warm on the ATC, but it would be tepid after each load you do. Same goes for hot.

The dryer was anything but elite. Aside from being a rattletrap, it took several passes to get a heavy load a jeans perfectly dry before moving to the wrinkle guard cycle, which can't be shut off.

Been happy to be back to the Neptune ever since.

Maytag Neptune washer and dryer

You guys are more fun. The model number I got was mah6500aww and the dryer mde5500ayw. I have never heard such a quiet washer and the dryer sounds very much like my old 806 dryer. I checked the door and it still says Newton Iowa and made in the USA. I will bet that won't be there much longer! I wiped the door seal dry and left the door open last night per advise from you guys on the forum. Thanks

Bleach Recommendation:

danemodsandy's profile picture
Hi:

The manual says to run a bleach load once a month because there have been mildew problems with Neptunes. The problem has been greatly decreased since the door boot was redesigned, but FL's seal very tightly (as they must to keep the water in). That promotes mildew if some chlorine bleach is not used periodically. Leaving the door open is an option some owners follow. Your new Neptune will have the redesigned door boot (the old one did not allow water to drain out of it; the new one does), so do not worry about that part of it. TLs seldom mildew because there is not a tight seal when the lid is closed; air can get to the tub and agitator. Even then, rust can be a problem on TLs left wet in humid environments.

Just do what Maytag says and you should be fine.

So is there a date/serial number range to be wary of? (door
latch, wax motor, rear bearing?) Always been tempted by the
Neptunes, but can only afford used and would want to avoid
potential problems.

Replaced Maytags with GE Adoras

I just last week replaced a MAH4000 we bought when it was a year old. I had replaced the door lock wax motor and replaced a triac and resistors on the board (I do electronics mostly) that the bad motor blew, three years ago. Then about a year ago it stopped filling any hot water, likely another dead triac, maybe a bad valve. about a 3 months ago the drum bearing started making that dieing sound during spin. So I didn't want to spend more money on this pig so I chucked it. The dryer was a LDG410 LP gas from the early 80's. No complains about it really it out lived two washers. Lately the auto dry mode didn't work likely a temp sensor.

We replaced these with GE Adora's the deluxe models with the water heating. Only big pain so far is the darn door on the washer can't be reversed! I have a weird setup and the maytag's door was easily reversed. Its a bit to soon to make any comments about how well they work. They are quiet though and have glass doors :)
