Hi All:

I have just had TREMENDOUS luck in the past two days.

Before the streak leaves me, I'm gonna purchase a PowerBall ticket.

On my way home from work today, I decided to stop at a Maytag dealer in a small town.

Due to road construction, I had to park a ways away and walk up a muddy street--but it was worth it!

This guy had the two belts I was looking for. . .and also the turquoise fabric dispenser cup.

And just as I took out my wallet to pay. . .HE TOLD ME THAT I COULD HAVE THEM FOR FREE!

Proof, indeed, that me and my center dial were meant to be.

I hooked up the machine in my garage and voila. . .it worked.

However, the agitation did seem slow, even on the Regular Speed setting.

Are my belts tight enough?

I've never seen a Maytag wash before, so this was my first time of up-close-and-personal.

I was quite surprised. To my eyes, it looked slow; however, the water currents told a different story.

I'm used to agitators that thrash--SURGILATORS rule--so perhaps this is just the way Maytags were engineered.

(I have a BOL Hotpoint that I just found at junk day this year, and that thing kicks the snot out of anything that falls into it's path.)

For all the Tag lovers in the group--I was also very impressed of how those machines were designed--most everything accessible through the front panel. I can see why that repair fella was known as the loneliest guy in town.

And GRAHAM--Of course I'm still interested in that '72 Whirlpool!

Talk to me, fella.

Dan

It might be the motor slides are bad, or need lubricated. Unplug the machine, take the front off, and make sure the motor moves back and forth freely.

regular speed seems slow...

Without seeing your machine in action, I can't fully address the speed issue, but here's my two cents: the speed may be right. If you are used to seeing DD Kenmores and Whirlpools in action, the Maytag (at regular speed) might seem to be slow compared to them..again, just my two cents worth.

Check if it's spinning slow too. I briefly had a 606 that was slow to get up to speed on agitation and never got up to full spin speed. I didn't bother trying to diagnose the problem. I had purchased the machine used from a dealer and was annoyed that the guy didn't even check it for proper operation so returned it and got my money back. Too bad, as that machine would probably still be my daily driver if it had functioned properly.

Belts, Belts, Belts

On a Maytag, the belts are to be a little loose actually. It could be ok to check them to see if they have any wear issues. With that said, they should be replaced about every ten years if the machine is in regular use. They are very easy to replace if need be. Tilt the machine backward, there are two belts, the drive belt from the motor, and the pump belt, called a poly pump, they should have alot of play in them.......they slip off and replace very easy.
