electric dryer

goatfarmer's profile picture
Here's the dryer. It has push buttons, and the washer has toggle switches. And the GENERAL ELECTRIC on the washer is in the middle of the console, where it's above the switches on the dryer.

I'd guess 1970, give or take 2 years. Here's a 1972 dryer that I picked up locally about 2 weeks ago.

Matching Set?

jons1077's profile picture
I believe those are a matching set. My grandmothers matching 1968 set had toggle switches on the washer and pushbuttons on the dryer. Very nice find! Sure wish I could have snagged those. I'll eventually have to kill someone for a set like that.

Could be from '73

Ken, my Grandparents had a set just like that and got it in '73. For some reason they got the top of the line "Heavy Duty 18" washer with mini-basket but got the smaller "Heavy Duty" dryer with the D-shaped door opening instead of the monster with the round opening. The washer had toggles and the dryer had pushbuttons. The washer lasted until '91 when the timer went. GE wanted $110 for a new one at the time so the machine was replaced with a '91 MOL Filter-Flo. I wish I had saved it! The dryer worked until recently when it would still turn but would not heat. Their house was sold late last year - my guess is that the new owner probably replaced both machines :(

Could you open the lid on the washer? Is the agi white?
black?

Hi Kenny, It's a 1977 WWA

mickeyd's profile picture
That's one of my summer garage machines. It's a real treat with the button next to the main dial, the MIni-Quick Switch, which shortens any cycle by 2/3's. Instead of advancing every three minutes, the dial moves every minute. I love it. Make sure your recipient finds a ramp agitator which is so much more fun and efficient than the 4 vane straight agi in the machine. This powerful work horse--or goat, haha-- is a 1977 model. Nice find. Somewhere in the Imperial Archives, I have a bunch of pics of this machine. Let me see if I can find them.

I think i have an advertisement some where stating that is the 1972-73 range.
I have relatives that had the washer. And I had that dryer in harvest gold at one time.

Nice set

A pic from Roberts very own Cyber museum of a 1978 GE washer. The lettering tended to get bolder, bigger, more colorful, and don't forget the wood-grained panel. Faux wood-grain, one of my favs. So 70's.

Very cool GE pair Kenny!

Any shot of the inside? That is one pretty washer - and dryer!

It must be GE Week! How funny - I just picked up a GE dryer too... Mine is an alarming shade of gold - but I am very curious about the electronic control. Even more curious is the Versatronic washer - what a find that would be. This will end up another orphan for me, I just wanted to play with it. It came with the Cling Free still in use! How could I pass it up?

The previous owners get (more) points off for not taking care of their classic dryer. Notice the ring of lint-scuzz around the door opening and the filter bump. The glue holding the sticker obviously got pretty warm - but no matter, just keep using it! It shows signs of being used on a poorly installed vent, I can't imagine what surprises are waiting inside the machine. There is a caution sticker on the back that says it has a "special 250 volt heater installed" and is dated 12/1/87. More bad-vent evidence!

Pulltostart: Does your dryer have a console light?

The first dryer my parents had was a 1969 model which looks almost exactly like yours. The console, however did not have the top part. It's height only went just above the controls, so as I remember the GENERAL ELECTRIC was in the space between the pushbuttons and the dial.

Goatfarmer: Nice set. My high school had a set like that one in the Home Economics Dept. Have fun with it.

Good Luck,
James

James - yes, console light and drum lamp.

Greg, it never ceases to amaze one what some people do to their appliances. It will really be interesting to see what it looks like inside. I know this is going to be a really nice dryer when you get done with it.

Hey washertalk, you get a friendly slap

mickeyd's profile picture
I own the machine. A best friend, Mad Dog, gave it to me when he bought a FL Frigidaire. In his MOM'S handwriting, on the original manual, it reads "Received August 15, 1977."

So you have an ad some where, and I have the machine in my garage, working. That's pretty funny.

Inside shot

It's a straight vane. It's missing the mini basket, but I believe I have one.
The GENERAL ELECTRIC script being in different places, along with the different switches, made me think they weren't a match. Methinks I'll have to look at the model #'s.

How come I can never find these GE's???

bajaespuma's profile picture
Kenny, that beautiful gold dryer would match the Versatronic washer is from 1968, the year before GE offered an 18 lb. capacity model and, I believe, the last year GE had a dryer with a foot pedal to open the door. Mazeltov, IIRC it's a fast, accurate and excellent dryer. We bought a version of that same model two years later and it's still being used.

Ken, Nice w-d set. I would say you can call those a matched set. Good eye for the detail of the "GE" name tag and the different type of switches.
It could be that at some point the top trim piece was replaced. I have replaced several of those. my guess would be that the one where GENERAL ELECTRIC is written in the middle is the replacement part. because they made so many variations they just started making one part that has a "generic" centered GE name. I have felt that disappointment of waiting for the special order part to come and then it isn't a perfect match.
As for the switches it was common in the 60s and 70s for the washers to have the toggle switches (gotta luv 'em) and the dryers to have the pushbuttons. Other than BOL, I have never seen a GE dryer with switches. It was either knobs or buttons. As for the GE washers as GE moved into the 80s and early 90s they were more likely to use the buttons. I like those toggle switches, it was one of the things that attracted me to GE.
You have a matched set. Hooray!

Greg, nice harvest gold dryer. I had that model in Avacodo and Gas. I like yours better. If you don't know already, there should be a "sensing strip" that is electronic and "feels" the clothings dampness. It is mounted on the other side of the lint filter. It has several wires that snake through the machine up to the computer.

Jonathon, umm, I hope you don't kill for a ge washer/dryer set or any other reason. It is such a bore... Blah, blah, another murder. Then you have to deal with what to do with the body(ies), and the possibilty of getting stains on your clothes. And, I mean, I know because when I wanted a 1984 Kenmore platinum washer/dryer set from the local Outlet store I, well, .... um,
happened to be,,,,
,,,,,
,,
,listening, to the RADIO station at the time in my van, yeah, yeah,
and heard somebody had done something similar to what you were proposing. I thought, geez, lucky I DIDN'T do ANYTHING like that. (ah-boy, where's my oxycontin).
