Hey guys ~

A few weekends ago, a KDI-14 in Stainless crossed my path at an estate sale. Of course the dishwasher was "going with the house" - Ann the Tag Lady says. I ask if I can open it up to take a look. As soon as the door is opened and the odor is let free, their immediate response was, "Oh my.... that thing is a mess!" Appears the filter had not been cleaned in quite sometime - a favorite trick. The KDS-14 is the most dreamy KA DW there is (in Jon's copper panels, of course!).

A few days later I had received some KitchenAid service materials - and low and behold some sales brochures were in the binder as well for the 14 and 15 series machines! Tonight I will post the 14 series machines, and over the weekend I'll scan the 15 series machines. Enjoy!

Ben

KDS-14 x 2!!

Saved the best for the built ins - why not just have ONE built in Superba when you can have TWO! Must be a big family. Not much can get cooler in the DW world than one of these babies - the last of the cast iron spray arms.

BONUS - KA goes Portable with "The Classic Look"

Couldn't be without showing off the 14 Series and miss the DuaCycle - the name says it all! And what do dish washers and statues have in common? Toggle, Veg, anyone?

Thanks for posting!!
You must come for a visit and try one in person, Greg was hooked and I am too. It was Robert and John that insisted I get a vintage DW and this is the one to have for sure. I use the Rinse feature all the time.

I bet if you go back to that house after it sells the new owners would love you to take away that KD14!! I bet it doesn't last a moonlite night.

I find new owners shakey about using someone else's DW!!

cheers Jet

There's my KDC-14! This is a fantastic machine - that cast iron "Guided Action Wash Arm" blasts food away. A whole load clean and rinsed twice in 30 minutes with only 11 gallons of water (roughly a quarter of a standard home water heater) and then dried perfectly!

There was a KD-12 in that house we pulled the Zenith out of last week - in brushed chrome - mint condition and Jon's right, it may never even see another load before it's removed and tossed to the curb!

Okay, I would definitely take a KDI 14! Nothing to complain about with that lil' baby!

What do dishwashers and statues have in common? Why, hands-free dishwashing, of course!

It looks like I've lost weight - and colored my hair! lol

I'll be doing some investigating about the fate on that KDI-14 I spied a few weeks ago. Between that and the KD-12 resting in my basement, I might be able to get one good machine going. Too bad a dishwasher won't be in sight in my kitchen - due to space constraints. Time to go Portable!

Here's My KDI-14

There's a whole story about converting this baby from a pump drain to a gravity drain. She was found literally brand new with a drain pump that was sheared. Everyone here helped me convert it and now she looks brand new and runs brand new. Pic 1

Gotta Love those old machines!

It does my heart good to see how well loved these truly Classic, HOBART BUILT machines are. Starting at the last post first, There was always a problem I found with the drain pumps in that the small pin that held the impeller to the shaft was not made of stainless steel. I replaced many a pin in these pumps with a small stainless cotter pin and got many more years out of them. Just a hint if anyone else runs into the same problems.

I have to say I have owned or obtained the following models of these classics myself and can only say that they all got better with age and technology. I had a KD10P Series Portable which had to weigh well over 200 lbs but it did roll around easily.A KDS14P which I kept in our basement for overflow dishes when my mom would entertain during the year.
It wasn't very long when I replaced the KDS14 with a Hobart Commercial machine in the basement..a Model UM4 which did the dishes in 3 minutes. That was a conversation piece for sure! I used the pumped drain from the 14 since it had to pump up to the drain line and not gravity drain.

The Official Kitchen machine, Originally a KDS15 which was actually the only diaheasher purchased by anyone in my immediate family was installed in 1965 then was replaced by a KDSS16 which had the stainless steel tank around 1986 and was so much quieter than the 15. By the way, we had already had the 15 for over 20 years when I found the 16SS sitting at the curb waiting for the garbage men to cart it away.
I sold the 15 to a friend for 100 bucks and she had it another 10 years before she replaced it with a 24 (whirlpool style) Kitchenaid. It was still running when she laid it to rest at her curb in 1996 or 97!
After the 16, I replaced it with a KDC21-D in 1988 which lasted at my Mom's house till 1993, when I switched it out for a KDI-19 which came out of my home on Long Island because we renovated the kitchen and I installed a fully rebuilt KDS18 machine in that kitchen. The 21 was later installed in the basement kitchen when we finished it off. We even had twin KitchenAid Disposers in the two kitchens!
Would you beleieve, I now have that 18 in my kitchen in Florida as well as the 21 in the garage as a spare/overload machine! When we moved from NY to Florida, my wife insisted that we take those two machines with us which we did and the first thing I had to do when the 18 arrived on the moving van was to toss out the GE Profile machine we already had in the house. She refused to use it as she hated the tower in the middle and the lack of capacity in the racks.

She is so devoted to these machines that she won't let me install the brand new KitchenAid machine I have sitting in the box, unopened, in my garage becasue it has the typical racks that load side to side with the dishes facing each other.

So technically, My mom and dad bought only one machine in 1965 and I have been salvaging and lucking out since then with all these different machines..

Oh, by the way, I have also acquired countless 16,17 18,19,20,21,22,and 23 series machines that I have fixed up and given to friends or installed in rental properties I used to have. Even my tenants got the best machines on the market at the time!
Well, I wish all you owners of these vintage machines the best of luck and am sure you will have many more years of good use out of them.

To nice to know there are other people out there who value the Hobart-made KitchenAid machines. They are becoming more and more rare. I am still trying to complete my collection of each built-in model from the 15-through the 21 series.

Ben - Please be assertive in following up with the new owners of the home which has the KDS-14. Find out when it sells, when the closing will be. I have acquired a few dishwashers in this manner. The comments were correct..many new owners will have new appliances picked out and an installer ready the first day or two when they close on the house. They expect to wash all their dishes that have been transported in their new machine. Many people are afraid of using an older machine for fear of leaking or damage to the floor. It's true that people would probably be glad to let you have it or offer it very cheaply.

Also, I live in Davenport, Iowa. Ben, I don't think you live too far from me. I have this summer off from school (teacher). Would love to meet you and see your collection, and you are also welcome to visit here anytime as well.

Good luck on the KDS-14 acquisition.

Todd

I would love to get my hands on a hobart made Kitchaid portable. Preferably a top loading, but would not turn my nose up at any. Even those made though the 70's
