My partner has finally agreed to let me replace our 1998 Whirlpool dishwasher. Since we may only be here another 3-5 years, I was thinking of either a Frigidaire or GE, because of their pricing points. I want something quiet since in the main living areas there are no real floor to ceiling walls (very open floor plan), and low cost. I just can't take silverware in the door anymore, And for something that was built in the late 90's, it sure is noisy. So, what would u all recommend--Thanks

Robert

I recomend the GE gsd6200.It retails for $399 at Home Depot and has great features including very quiet operation!!!I have this Triton model at home and am impressed with its performance as well as its quiet operation. The Frigidaires wash system works intermediately.both spray arms don't operate at the same time.I have already heard of the upper spray arms falling off during operation. The GE Tritons do a full set of dishes for 16 people!!They also do a great job on casseroles and pots and pans.Of course,I use the Electrosol tablets too.

Dishwasher decisions

Robert:

Since we just bought a mol Bosch, I would recommend it highly. They run about $550-600.00, and we purchased ours at Lowe's. It has a stainless steel tub (say "Yay, no plastic") and a basket that, albeit, looks a bit flimsy, sits in the tub - not the door.

I'm still getting used to the smaller interior configuration (a little more European than ours). However, the top rack is removable and adjustable to hold taller items on the bottom rack. This is the quietest dishwasher that I have ever heard. I still find myself walking by and touching it just to make sure that it's on. Our living area and kitchen are one big room, so quiet operation is an added plus.

If you plan on being in your home 3-5 years, the yearly cost of the item is $110-200.00. My feeling is, if you truly love the dishwasher - take it with you and replace it with a bol Hotpoint for $180.00.

Hope this offers a little more insight.

Venus

Thanks for the info and insight Retromom--however, the Bosch is what i'm getting when the new house is finished. My "sister-n-law" has and intergrated Bosch and I love it. I'm gonna wait to spend the money for that then. This is just and "stop gap" for now. Yesterday while out shopping I had a salesman at a local store (not a big box store) say to me "well,,,,,u better do a little more research as GE motors burn up--that's why we don't sell them". That the first time I heard any ever say that. I thought I knew what I wanted but, like a fool, I asked my partner what he would put up with and he said "that's your department--just don't get black". and with the kitchen being all almond (which i personally hate)I thought I would get something in black with SS. That's why I had narrowed it down to the Frigidaire, around $300 or the GE for around $350.

I've been disgusted with two GE dishwashers so far. One of them was in my condo when I moved it. Didn't take long for me to get rid of it!
I bought a BOL Roper (if that's not redundant!) for $157.00 at Lowes and am very happy with it. Gets the dishes nice and clean, is quieter than the GE (though I pulled the insulation mat off the GE and stuck it to the Roper when I installed it) and doesn't leave crud all over the dishes. Only real problem is that the silverware basket is a little too small.

I have the Bosch and couldn't agree with Retromom more. That would also be my first choice again. However, have you considered a Sears Ultra Wash? They are in your price range and not a bad machine for the price. My niece has one (about 4 years old now) and loves it. I have loaded it and really liked the rack configuration.

If I were you, I would hit all of the used appliance stores and see if you couldn't pick up a used Hobart KitchenAid or rebuilt Maytag belt drive for about $100 or so. Might be worth a try, and they are MUCH better than ANYTHING found today. Mark

Boy, I really want to steer you toward the new TOL Frigidaire (3450 or 3460 (this one is has a stainless door and it's the one I have).

HOWEVER, I did have two problems with my machine, which have since been repaired at no cost to me: The START pad quit working (I could still use the machine by utilizing the DELAY START pad) and the upper spray arm would suction itself to the back of the machine and then fall off when you pulled out the top rack if you didn't unload the dishes within about an hour of the cycle's end.

I love the SPEED CLEAN cycle as well as the option to wash either the top or bottom rack alone (for only 3-1/2 gallons of water.) It cleans very well and is relatively quiet.
The upper rack is adjustable and loading is very flexible in both the top and bottom racks. The silverware holder can be separated into three smaller pods, which I've found to be very handy, much to my surprise.

Note that the new washing system is only available in the TOL models. My previous (2002 TOL) Frigidaire cleaned well, but the upper rack, especially, gets a better cleaning in the new model.

OK, Mrcleanjeans, you've redeemed yourself. I'll tell the Frontloading Washer Police to take you off their blacklist. (See the Switching Back To A Classic thread)

Vodka and Xanax... Did you say

Gosh, RE563 your partner, at long last. He begrudgingly permitted you (astringent price point, NOT BLACK, essential color match, you loathe for future “almond” color kitchen, “his color choice..?”) for replacing the dishwasher. Gosh again. To have a partner like him.

I am not alone. Was blessed. An epiphany like thing. Now by myself. Whatever his name was? Do not recall him ever writing a check. The color of his choice was “Baby Blue”! Yep, you read that correctly. That color spread from one bathroom to the other. Like the e-bola virus. Forget about sitting on-the-bowl reading the evening paper. I had reason to be horrifically terrified. The kitchen was stricken by that color “Baby Blue”. Oh, forgot to mention. I HATE THE COLOR “BABY BLUE”!! Ah…just in passing. Cash-is-King. That being said. Voo Doo Doctor’s curses do come true.

Anyhow. BTW, Whirlpool not only has repaired the Hubble Telescope, commenced manufacturing heat seeking thermal nuclear mother-of-all-weapons-of-mass-destruction bombs. And as if that wasn’t enough. Redesigned their DW to have the wonderful “anywhere” sliver basket. Perhaps, you might revisit Whirlpool DW?

Or…. Evil, wicked, awful, mean of me to recommend. Go for that TOL integrated Bosch DW you sooo yearn for. Here is the plan. Do not dispose of the ancient Whirlpool. No. Go to WalMart. They have an immense heap of sickening color/pattern table “runners”. You have two choices. Place the old DW with “that” WalMart runner thing. Next to “his” favorite chair as an end table. Better yet. Locate old decorated DW on “his” side of the bed as an end table.

If. And. Whenever? The new house is completed. Simply remove the Bosch DW. Install in new …home. Reinstall the old Whirlpool. “His” end table. Every day is a gift. Do it! RE563. You only travel this way once. Get that Bosch DW now and in black-s/s too! I know where of what I speak of.

Agree With Veg-O-Matic About Roper

After going years without a dishwasher, I was so happy to move into my condo six years ago and find a BOL Roper installed. I had been tempted to replace it a few times because of its plain looks, but there's nothing plain about the way it gets my dishes clean. Living alone, I only use the dishwasher three times a week--just load it up, use Great Value powder and run an extended wash with air dry. Everything comes out so clean. Of course, I have to clean out the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher, and I wish there were more silverware baskets. But for its price, Roper gets the job done right. (I can also say that about my Roper-made top-freezer fridge, and washer-dryer pair.) But the bottom-of-the-line Roper gas range was the worst I had ever owned; the igniter broke twice and the broiler was a joke. At the first opportunity, I got rid of it and bought a new Fridgidare gas self-cleaning oven. Good choice.
