I picked up that unique looking harvest gold Kenmore from the other thread thanks to Rich. It turns out to be from 1972.

Other than the missing detergent/bleach dispenser cup, it is complete and works flawlessly. And man is it quiet!!!

We put a new bulb in it for the console as well.

That was a funky looking console! What agitator is in that thing?

Beautiful machine. I LOVE Penta-Swirl agitator.
Thank you for posting the videos.

That console design must have been in the stores for a couple of years. I know that my relatives had that console on their dryer which they bought in 1974.

Great video. That agitator rolled those clothes like nobody's business. Thanks also for showing the mechanism at work. A+ in my book.

Good Luck,
James

I'm surprised! I have never seen a Penta Swirl do its thing and looking at it never expected any kind of turn over or motion!

That thing really moves the water and clothes! Now I gotta find one to plunk into my '55 Kenmore.

Nice vid

It's growing on me

Those "funky" consoles are starting to grow on me. Still better than the all-black consoles that were coming in the next few years.

The strangest part is I do not remember this style washer in the stores back then, but boy do I remember the penta-swirl!!!! That was the top of the line agitator at the time, I remember the "piano key" models had switched to it by that time.

Jason, I'm glad Spats saved the machine. I kind of like the auxiliary switches on top; makes them easier to see, and the actual timer dial seems slightly slanted toward the user, which is nice. Interesting to hear about the agitator, I don't know that I've seen one of those in action. Looking back now, that was such an unfortunate period in Sears washer history (not in 72 but later in the 70s) and that's always frustrated me. I definitely like this one better than the black ones!

Great video!

I completely missed the video link the first time around. Yay, it has a light above the timer dial! I LOVE that agitator!! Maybe if they'd stuck with that we would have been spared the industry-wide copycatting of that godawful two piece corkscrew design. The machine looks like brand new on the inside too.

Curious that it used the box type detergent dispenser with the little pokey thing at a time when the recirculating type was still in wide use, but maybe this was supposed to be an experimental machine for some "new" features like that and that agitator, being it's such a different design altogether.

Enjoy this great machine in good health.

I know what I forgot to ask

Is this a large machine, or standard?

Scott55405:

This is a large capacity machine.

Very nice looking machine - the Penta-Swirl was always my favorite, I'm glad you posted the video of it's abilities - maybe people will stop rolling their eyes when I say how good it was. *just don't overload it - then all action stops dead! ;-)

What is the serial number on your washer?

skinny belt

Those skinny belted machines are incredibly quiet. Be sure if you ever change the water pump to save the old pulley.

Cool machine. It sounds good.

Fun machines Mike. I like your new Kenmore. It's so unique.

Thanks for the video too. I've never seen one of these in action.

Mike, I can probably dig up the owners manual for this machine if you are interested. Email me and let me know. I may also have the detergent dispenser, but can't say for sure on that. It could have gotten tossed.

Looks like you've got the trademark skinny green belt on this one. I replaced the belt on my mom's machine once and it was a bit involved but not a major undertaking.

You will enjoy the quiet of this machine. Draining and spinning are louder cycles than the agitation! This machine will serve you quietly and efficently for a good long time.

Ralph
