While visiting the "Uitmarkt" festival (yes another festival, August is a busy month) I discovered this Smeg shop. Now look to the right side of the shop window...

SINK REFRIGARATOR COMBO???!!!

Post# 232983 , Reply# 5   8/26/2007 at 16:49 (6,079 days old) by mielabor ()

And the back...

At first I doubted that this was for sale but after consulting the Smeg website it appeared that this washer is fully functional and listed for sale. Also available in pink! Now what would you do with a sink on top of a washer?

Thinking about the IKEA/Scandinavia market....

I could imagine popular in some of the "Minimmalist" markets around the world.
Would not be my cup of tea.... I prefer separate washer, dryer, dishwasher. etc

Peter, I also favor separate appliances for every different household chore, but maybe I would welcome such a convenient combined appliance if I lived in a 30 sq. m (300 sq. ft) or even smaller apartment. I guess this appliance is aimed at the ultra small home market.

Smeg is italian...but

I've never have seen something invented here...apart from the good desing...

And we complain that chinese have been copying us for years?! So they got copy of the copy...

Last entry is the Rex-Electrolux TIME MANAGER...

But haven't MAYTAG (like any other traditional TL maufacturers) managed the cycle with the time...

Pushbuttons set the speed and the temperature..
Knobs set the time dependingo on soil level...

Isn't it? Or I mistake..?

SMEG

Smeg is Italian... the Italian Miele.
You can have all the opinions you wish, but the quality is just great. Paired with the best of the Italian style. :D
They also sell with the name White Whestinghouse in Italy, don't know about other countries.
The machines are very reliables and high performance. My favourite brand. Mom has a all Smeg kitchen and it's since 1979, 28 years of reliability. The only thing that didn't make it is the fridge that was changed 10 years ago after the house move, it got damaged in the transport, how sad.

Well, Smeg certainly has a colourful assortment of refrigerators. However, from looking into the shop I got the impression that washing machines are not their main line of products. The dominant appliances in the shop were professional looking stainless steel cookers and ovens. They also had ovens on wheels. Another thing that I hadn't seen before. The washers were placed in the "back alley" of the shop.

I noticed that the washer with the sink attracted a lot of attention from passersby and I was certainly not the only one taking pictures. Still, I have my doubts about the practicality of the sink on the washer. It is rather small, only for washing your hands I would say. Maybe it is designed to clean the cap of the fabric softener bottle after use :)

Can´t imagine that they´re solid-built machines..

Never would like to have such a fridge-washer, waht a fake..haha.

Even had seen them on Tv, i think they wash worse than worse:(

Diomede, yes I had seen that sink before I knew of the Smeg washer. With the GE sink I had my doubts too about the practicality, although it seems a lot bigger and of a better construction. I am not surprised that that GE washer is rare. So when I saw this Smeg washer I could't help wondering what was in the mind of the designers.

Well eventually I want to convert my Super Unimatic to 240 volts. Hmmmm maybe I will think of a way to have it bake bread?

Post# 233244 , Reply# 16   8/27/2007 at 16:07 (6,078 days old) by mielabor ()

Robert, that can't be very difficult. The kneading paddle is already there. You only need to install a suitable heater in the cabinet, do some programming to get the baking time right and there you have your giant bread maker. First get rid of the dog hairs of course, but I believe that you have solved that problem already :)

Now what would you do with a sink on top of a washer?

Pre-treat your panties before putting them in the washer, no?

Smeg Washer

This does look interesting. How much does this machine cost? Also, what is the capacity of the washer?

More info...

Well, I have tried to find more info on this machine. Strangely enough this washer seems to be available only in Italy and the Netherlands. I couldn't find any information in English. The machine is not listed in the catalogues for Australia, Ireland, UK and USA and on the Smeg Italian website the machine is listed in the Italian version of the catalog but not in the English version. So the information that is provided in the link is in Dutch unfortunately. The specifications are fairly standard for European washers: capacity 5 kg, spin speed 1600 rpm. The outer tub is made of stainless steel. The price of the machine is around 1250 euro.

Nice looking washer! Do you know what the material of the top is? What a pity Smeg doesn't make dryers. What would we want on top of a dryer?

Louis, I am almost sure that the material of the top is plastic.

I've never seen a washing machine like this before!

It looks fab and classy too!

I quite like the sink bit on top, wonder how it all works?
I suppose the water connection is shared with the machine and the drained water goes through it's drain pump, I'm guessing that what happens! Reply me if I'm right or wrong!
