Someone had to post a thread on this, so it might as well be me! Cool control panel on that one, she is a real beauty!
So, at this point, Philco was calling it a Wonder Wash agitator. How many different names did they call it over the years? There was also High-Frequency washing action.
Plus, they're saying 7 sheets can be washed in a 12 pound load.
What, crib sheets?
Jerry

I think it's funny you can wash 7 sheets, instead of 6 or 8. Who has only 1 sheet on their bed? (Maybe that's the crib sheet you referenced, Mrcleanjeans. LOL!)

How do you set the cycle on this? Is that a row of pushbuttons? It looks more like you should twist a knob to change the indicator behind the little oval "hole". The cycle knob only has a setting for wash??
And what's up with the whole Miss America thing, anyway?

It is kind of confusing.
If it was called Mr. America, all it would have is an on/off
switch!

Just mash in the button and turn the knob untill it stops? The cycle is set? I remember the "Blades-O-Water" term for the agitation. Considering how many of those things were around in the sixties, they sure did disappear in a hurry!

I can't remember ever seeing one of these around here. But I didn't really make a point to check out my friends moms washers when I was a kid. (prolly just didn't think about doing it,I still thought automatic washer were kewl then!)
It still seems like I would remember that attractive control panel. Perhaps they didn't sell too well around here. When I visit the used appliance stores around here it's always: GE Filter-Flo,Hotpoint,Kenmore/Whirlpool/and of course the center timer Maytags.Never see anything too "exotic".

By the way, does anyone know that there was a real Lady Kenmore?? I remember reading about her in HS history class. She was from Europe, thats all I remember.

Rick

I also remember "undertow wash action" on the Philco. Seems they changed the name of it every year.

Well the instruction guide might help.

I found this book as well as the Philco Miss America Washing Guide that went with it at an Estate Sale about six years ago. We all know the machine was once there, but there was something modern in its place. Boohoo.

Uni--- Thanks for the instruction manual! I love reading them. I can't believe how brief the wash periods were on this machine. Nine minutes is about half the length of the longest wash time on ye moderne toploader, isn't it? A very cool machine.

Philco

So, Robert, what's your take on how many sheets the Philco can wash? Have you ever tried this in yours?
Thanks for posting the manual. It's really interesting. Any other cool pages/diagrams in it you could scan?
(when you have a chance, that is!)
Jerry

Hi Jerry, I bet they are referring to 7 double bed size sheets, as I don't believe there were queen size beds in the early 60's. I do believe my '59 Philco could turn over seven sheets, its a wonderful machine.
