I was out garage saling this morning and happened upon this little number. It's quite interesting, the guy who had it said he used it in his garage for cleaning rags etc and I'm wondering if that's in fact what it was built for in the first place, shop stuff. It's called the Monitor and made by a company called Monitor in Toronto. Works like charm, he said he replaced the drain hose (gravity drain) and I noticed it's leaking every so slightly probaly where that drain hose is connected. It's quiet too with the belt drive side mounted agitator disk much like on the Hoovers. Here's some pics
It needs some rust paint or somethhing especially on the belt drive side.

Here come the suds, two bucketfuls of hotwater and you can see the whirlpool of fun on the left.

Time to drain, just unhook the hose and lay it down

Seeing it's hard to gauge the size of this thing it's 30" tall X 1 ft wide.

I'm wondering what came first, the Hoover or the Monitor? Pete, your machine looks very similar to the Hoover 0307 from 1948, except the Hoover has a double-walled washtub. The linky goes to the picture of Chestermike's machine.

One seems to have ripped of the other, but not sure which!

Hmmm very well could be it's very similar but I have no idea when mine was made. I'm not even familiar with the name Monitor except that I have seen a cylinder vacuum cleaner with the name on it which obviously looked to be from the 40's or early 50's. I'll have to do a little researching. Could be that Hoover bought the firm at sometime

I have the Hoover version of this!

Hey, Pete, cool machine! I have the Hoover-made version that I think was made in the early 50's. Sadly, I will have to try and sell off mine - I will find out on Monday if I am going to be moving from two houses in the lower Laurentians to one kinda small house on the Quebec-Vermont border...
Enjoy the Monitor!!

For sure - I will get some pix next week when I head back up to the houses that are going to be sold. I am also going to have to figure out what to do with a late '60s Simplicity wringer washer that lives in the garage right now. I wish had kept a 1950 Hotpoint wringer washer that I saved from the trash. I scrapped it when the pump drive wheel wore out - if I'd tried looking on eBay or something I'll bet I could have fixed it. Oh well, live and learn...

Finally found some history on this and the company under Monitor Equipment Corp. Looks like it's from the 40's

Hey pete,

here's a picture from the Science museum website of the 1948 0307 with the side-mounted impeller, and link to further images of it:

And this is my 1976 power wringer version, with a pedal controlling the wringer. I'd love to know when Hoover stopped making these, as the pedal was introduced in 1975 AFAIK to comply with a new safety legislation.

There seems to be a connection to Monitor Equipment the maker of this washer and GE.... I think they designed the GE Monitor Top refrigerator. Hence the name.
