Hi guys!

I know it's been a while since I've posted but starting your life over can be a little distracting... I'm loving it here in LA and doing really well. Plus - my stuff arrives on Weds with my Filter Flo!!! - I'm so excited!

Anyway - can anyone tell me where to look for vintage machines out here?

I used to go to the old appliace stores in PA but I have no idea where to begin here - I don't see many on the curbs either. I want to find a dryer for my 68 GE.

Just wondering where you all find the great machines.

Let me know.....

Matthew

Welcome

Hi,

Welcome to Los Angeles. Once you are settled, let me know and we can plan a date to do a wash-in so you can meet the other collectors out here.

There are no appliance junkyards that I know of in LA. I have heard there is one east of Riverside but no one can provide me with info on if it is still in operation and I could not find any listings in the yellow pages on-line.

For parts, I have good luck with the older gentleman at Coast Appliance Parts in Gardena. He usually works on Saturday morning and will take time to find a part for you.

There is an appliance restoration district for old refrigerators and stoves in South Central LA, with most of the places on Western Ave, South of the Colliseum. It is very safe to go there during the day and hunt around.

Look forward to meeting you soon,

Mike

Hi Mike!

Thanks for the kind response. I'd LOVE to come down to see your machines and the other members. My FF is on its way here and should arrive tomorrow. It works but needs a few things tweeked. I eventually want to change the transmission because the tub indexes with large loads and the speed shifter solenoid is shot so it jumps right to the fast speed. Other than that, its a great machine and one that i treasure.

I am pretty well settled but am also very busy with work, thankfully. I usually have sundays free or we could do an evening after work if you want and I can bring food for us all.
I'm somewhat familiar with LB as my very close friend lives just off Broadway across from the Library cafe.

Lets plan for something soon!
Matthew

Wash In

Hi Matthew,

I will send an email to the guys and see when they are available.

I am open most Saturday nights. My weeknights are booked, as I teach an auto shop class Mon-Thurs nights from 5 - 10PM.

Your GE washer looks great!

Looking forward to doing a mini-wash in soon,

Mike

Matthew--

Jeez Loiuse, its has been forever since we chatted. I am glad to see that CA is treating you well. We should have met up before you moved.... just never seemed to work out. I miss chatting, and our Filter Flo talk. :) Nice to see you posting, though!!

Welcome to Los Angeles!

Hi Matthew,

I'd like to second what Mike said. Unlike other areas of the country, there are not all that many places where older appliances can be easily found in LA. On occasion, there are estate sales (often listed in the neighborhood classified ad papers found at supermarkets), and even yard sales, held during the spring and summer months.

Don't discount the discussions here on AutomaticWasher.org. It was in this way several years ago, through an e-mail that Robert received and posted from a seller in nearby Torrance, that I was able to contact that person to buy the Duomatic that was available.

The next best thing, I have found, is to look around in second-hand stores, as well as in the garages and storage sheds of friends and relatives who are moving or just cleaning out space. In the used appliance stores, this exercise can be both boring and discouraging, especially when you realize that there are a lot of not-too-old machines (within the past 5-7 years) from certain brands present with surprising regularity. At the same time, there are the older gems that you only find by being patient.

There are a couple of such stores in the area near me (I'm in the Gardena area), and I'll let you know where they are if your're interested.

Again, welcome to LA, neighbor!

Darryl

sounds like fun

Where are you guys located in Los Angeles? I am in the valley (Studio City). I have connections with a couple of other AW.org guys out here.

Hi there. The one in Riverside was called,
"Appliance Recycling Factory". It is 3 years since I left California and I hear that it has been closed. You may wish to check on that. It was on Pyrite Road in Riverside.
