Miele: 1918 washer, near mint condition. Washload: Big bath "sheets". Normally I can wash seven of these bath sheets in the Neptune without too much trouble. Although the Neptune generally has struggled to balance such a load, with a lot of banging and tumbling before it sorts it out, and sometimes it doesn't get to final spin speed, and I have to reach in, redistribute the load, and run another spin. So in my first try with the Miele 1918, I was able to fit in just four of these bath sheets. I tried to fit in a fifth one, but no go. It ran perfectly, though, with no balancing issues. And the rinsing was very thorough, important for bath towels. The next time I decided to try to run five bath sheets. To do this, I carefully folded each one up, and placed each folded towel in the machine. In this way I was able to get five bath sheets in the 1918. The load washed just fine, with no apparent balancing issues (I left the machine during the wash and went into the main house to tend to other things). I did notice that the water level in the "laundry tub" I set up was significantly higher than for other, smaller loads. Those towels soak up a lot of water and the Miele keeps on adding it until it's satisfied. I know there were no major balancing problems because the towels came out with very little residual moisture. For those who like to know such things, the bath sheets are Martex "Bare Necessities" 100% egyptian combed cotton. After washing and drying they measure about 33" x 65". From Costco, natch. |

Appnut's first name is Robert, or Bob. Bob is noted for skill ful loading of dishwashers and clotheswashers to their absolute maximum, which loads are thusly referred to as "bobloads". I believe he is bestowing the honor of "Bobload" upon my recent laundering of five large bath sheets in the Miele 1918. It is considered quite an honor. ;-) |

I haven't weighed them recently, but last time I checked, some seven of same bath sheets weighed about 13 lbs. So five would weigh considerably less than 5 kg. I attibute the lighter weight to the fact that they are terry-cloth, which is fluffy and mostly air. Folding them neatly compacts them more, but they are still light. I would probably not try folding heavily soiled laundry, as the folds would tend to shield dirty areas from thorough cleaning. For bath towels, however, it's not an issue. |
