Back in the day when I had my big honkin Maytag TL I could set it on Hot and even after it purged with cold I would get a "pretty" hot wash. Now when I select Hot on my FL Danby it uses so little water that the lines never purge. Of course the Danby will heat the water, but am I really saving $$ and the planet? The D will continue to churn away until it satisfies the thermo, all the while using elec. My other choice is to open a faucet down the line from the washer to purge the line. Somehow, I'm missing how I'm doing great things for the planet and my utility bill.

Let the Danby do the job. It's heating only the small amount of water it has drawn, to the specific temp it wants. That's more efficient than heating a whole-house supply.

Or purge the line at the faucet into a bucket and use the water for something else like household cleaning or watering plants.

Have the same problem with our dishwasher; the builder didn't put the WH where I told him to, so we have a long line purge we have to do before starting it. Even so, because the cycle is slow, the water in the lines cools off between fills. I've toyed with the idea of plumbing one of those little 5-gallon heaters into the water line next to the dishwasher. Actually, given how little water the DW uses, I wonder if it wouldn't be better to just connect the little heater to the cold water.

And your dishwasher hasn't an internal heater?
