OMG!! THE BEST MACHINES EVER!
I've had 3 indesits in my life, the only one that gave trouble was teh first one which died when i was about 3 because of excessive use with bad bearings. It was a brown fascia machine with 2 dials i think

second was same as urs above except it only had 1 button on it. Had a 600rpm spin i think, never gave an ounce of trouble, just worked and worked, is still going 13 years later with NO problems, one of mums friends has it now.

My last indesit was a WG1233T one of the last WELL MADE indesits! I loved it, 2 dials, dorr handle at the top right of the door. That machine is still going nearly 9 years on with no repairs! One of mums elderly friends has it now. We gave it up when we moved in with my step dad as he had a washer dryer!

Thanks for the pics, how long you been interested in machines?
Any chance of a vid of it in action? :-D

ive always been intrested in wasing machines, these are indesits best looking machines and one of the easiest to use, love the sound of the motor, it was always so quiet, unfortunatly i won't be able to make any vids because the machine above belongs to my nanny's friend, my auties one of these machines was the exact same as the one above but six years of continus washing wore the motor out and the bearings went in my nanny's one, they were much better than some of the indesit's being made nowdays.
here's another pic of the machine.

I love Indesit's too, even the love-it-or-hate-it Moon model lol.

My nana who lives down in Somerset has a late 1998 WG1030 model. It's no Miele but it's a very good machine, I love it!

It's a base model with 3 buttons, On/Off, Economy 60C, and reduced spin 1000/600RPM. It features the top-right mounted door handle and it has a 5KG load capacity.

I love seeing it working, alternating between gentle and normal action on the cottons programme while still giving the load a good clean. I love the interesting spin sequence too, it has anti-clockwise spin and it spins in intervals while dropping back down to distribute speed in between which is a neat touch.

The max spin is only 1000RPM but it spins the clothes well.

I love the sounds it makes. The timer, the motor and my favorite, the pump, which makes a really good chugging sound lol. I just love listening to it's pump, it's a great sound!

It's been very reliable, no breakdowns at all!

My grandma has a similar model, the WG820. It's the same as nana's but without a spin reduction button and only 800RPM spin. That too has also been reliable.

Both models have the Servis-style drum, but it has 3 paddles of course!

So, that's my liking of Indesit's for you. They're not all bad lol.

I'll do pictures and vids of them soon!

Omega

We bought an omega 1200 in dec 1994 when our hotpoint washer dryer broke down. It was a quieter than the hotpoint but i remember it being noiser than most other machines! It was the one with the eco sense and the squareish door. In hindsight i liked it because you could stick straight onto the fast spin. Sudslock galore!

the Europa L5LGB(I think) still available in the mid 70s.

...you know guys? This may be that famouse wm known for not having a draining pump...the machine started the spin reversing the wash cycle motor way so that the spinning motor force provided both spinning an drainig contemporanealy!

The customers complaints were such a lot for the demage caused for the incredibile instability of that machine such that Idesit stopped so early producing it

Even previous machine had got a draining pump...so maybe had it been a sctictly economical producer choose!? I honestly don't know...

The same machine has the BIO-step but I don't remeber other than the yellow pushbutton to select the funtion and nothing else.

Hi Diomede and thanks Paul for adding the pic of the L5LGB.

My neighbour had this machine and I used to see it a lot. It was quite violent and would jump around her kitchen as the stability wasn't very good. In fact the sides of the machine were all bowed as the drum bashed against them. It only spun around 400rpm too.

In 1987 it was replaced (on my recommendation) by a Hotpoint 9530. I remember my neighbours couldn't get over how fast it span 1000rpm.

Rob

Here is the instruction book for my nan's first washer. She only had it a few years.

Indesit 2000 Series

Oh how those pics bring back memories. We had the Series 2000 machine when it was launched the 2103 with the three dials on as pictured above by RobM. I remember the excitement when it arrived because it was heavily advertised on TV at the time and far more modern looking than much of the competition at the time. It was very noisy indeed but washed well and did 5 deep rinses half way up the door with one 300rpm spin before the last rinse. I think it lasted about 12 years of heavy use before being replaced. Motor and drain pump failed after 3 years but replaced under warranty , drum replaced due to a coin causing damage on fast spin and the door seal was a design flaw on the first production run and was replaced with a new design because clothes were getting caught in the front on spin. It made some lovely clicking noises from the programmer and i do remember the drum was quite big. One of my favorite machines of all time. I'd love to find one in good condition. I loved playing with the spin speed taking it up and down during spinning lol.

Oldschool indesit, that would be nice to put in the collection! I've just retired a 2001 indesit that was my g.fs. It wasnt too hot on washing, i.e it tumbled slow. and strangely the synthetics tumbled more than cottons.Weirdly did a high level cooldown, a high level 1st rinse, 2 low level rinses and a high level final rinse, then loads of pulse spins followed by a brief 1000rpm. It was one of the new logo designed models. See the pic i've attached!

I've love a series 2000 indesit. a friend from primary school had one and i had some of my clothes washed in it when i stayed over a few nights and got in the usual kid mess from playing games in the park etc.

I forgot to reply to your comment about the WIL163 i used!

Yes with extra rinse you get a total of 3 of those whopping rinses! Standardly on cottons you get 2 high levels which are similar to our hotpoints, which you can make it do 3 of too! It was really fun to use for two weeks!

Great to see piccies of those mid 80s chrome door machines. They didn't half look smart!

Right upto date I had a WIL103 (I think) at my previous house. No real problem with it - it was just a bit noisy thats all. gave it charecter though.

80,s Indesit

I well remember my 1st Indesit. It was a 2093 model with chrome door and black facia. Bought in november '82 for £139.00 from Rumbelows in Brixton! A 400rpm spin and no drain pumping, just going from wash to spin with 5 rinses where the water reached the bottom of the glass.
I remember ringing Indesit in clapham junction and verifing that it didn't drain and spin as my neighbour had that old L5 model which so impressed me with it's quietness (i had a Hoover keymatic deluxe) that i wanted one similar and wasn't dissapointed. It was as quiet as my Miele is today!!

Re the WIL103

Hi Darren.

not much to say in all honesty.
we had a Zanussi jetsystem before it and it was noticible how much bigger the drum of the WIL103 was.

results wise - we never had a problem with the way it performed at all.

operationally - the only problem i had with it was that it was significantly more noisy than the zanussi was. we lived in a terrace and there wasn't a dividing door between kitchen and living room area. when it was spinning the volume on the tv had to be put right up in order to hear over it.

other than that there were no problems with it.

Hi Nicola.

many thanks for posting that picture of the indesit L6.

is that an old photograph or is that machine still with us today?

i nearly leapt out of my skin when i first saw it as it instantly brought back memories of the machine my dad repaired for my aunt.

it too was an L6 but a UK version of it - not sure of the model number (can anyone help with the model number?).
it was probably a late 1970s machine and was pensioned off by a family friend. rather than being scrapped it was stored in their garage, until my dad acquired it for repair. This was probably my first repair job helping my dad and i was about 4 at the time.

Really pleased to be able to show this machine as its one i am very fond of.

It isn't an old photo. That photo has been gone off last week.
Your photo should be another version of L6SI, but I'm not sure.
I'm waiting other photos! THIS THREAD OF INDESIT IS WONDERFUL!

I`ve had the same looking Indesit as the one in the picture where the pump lid is taped.
But mine had three control lights between temperature control and the pushbuttons.
It was a love-hate relationship ;-) I remember the door seal always felt sticky.

I second your emotion Nicola, I would love to see some pictures of the L5 series too. That was the first Indesit series that I have memories of. The brother of my grandfather had one and it lasted and lasted. It got a few repairs, but he was able to do that himself.

the only images of the Indesit L5 series machines are two poor quality scans - see below.

as far as i know, the L5 series was basically an extended life version of the 'Europa' a fairly decent image of which i posted earlier.

I am not very au fait with Indesits line up, so if the above statement is wrong - please do let me know.

The scans are from 1970s 'Which' consumer magazines circa 1973 through 1976.

hope they help

Dramatic Spin Drain

Hi Paul,
The Indesit in your picture actually performed a spin drain, the drain pump was mounted on the rear of the main (Induction) Motor and driven directly. They were very dramatic to watch as they had quite high water levels and went from tumble directly into spin full of water. They were brilliant at rinsing with a spin after the wash followed by 5 deep rinses, I think the spin was around the 550RPM mark.

I recall they were sometimes sold under the Sovereign name.

Hi David.

yep i have heard about the spin drain being rather energetic!

as far as i can remember, the machine was never plumbed in at my parents house - would have meant my dad unplumbing their 3236H and i dont remember this happening.

as a result i have never seen an indesit in its full spin drain glory.

the thought of it is quite frigtening to be quite honest. the thought of a drum load of washing PLUS all its water being suddenly spun about.

i can imagine the results - shame a spin drain indesit cant be seen in full fury today. be really interesting.

Cheers for the info
paul

Dramatic Spin Drain

Hi Paul,
Check out dubstar85's link (Thanks dubstar85) that seems to be a clone of the Indesit and shows the spin drain in all its glory.
It's years since I have seen or worked on one, they were very simple and reliable machines. People usually upgraded them with faster spinning washers, they were seldom discarded due to mechanical failure.

Cheers David and David

have never seen that before - a lot more stable than i expected. really very pleasantly surprised - or was that just a very balanced load or well behaved machine?
I ask because i expected it to be a lot more unbalanced.

the last one of the Indesit L5's that I saw was owned by a cousin and his girlfiend, way back in the late 80's.

there was also another in the family, belonging to a distant aunt and uncle. this machine lived in a specially modified kitchen unit with doors across the front, so generally you couldn't see it.
the edge of the work surface was hinged so it could be lifted up in order to access the drawer chute and programme dial etc.

once again, cheers for highlighting the existence of these vids. even though it's a clone, it is great to see an L5 again after all these years.

L7 and L6SI

Hi Paul and everyone

God these pics take me back!

Paul the L7 pic does look quite like my nan's although it didn't have any buttons. Unfortunately, it packed up but how I don't know.

The L6SI takes me back to when I was invited to a distant relatives one summer when I was about 13 and she had that machine in her new house. I got to play with it a bit but the rubber seal was rotten (she had never used it). I moved it for her into the yard and boy was it heavy!

She told me she had been given a second hand machine which was in her garage. What a joy for me to find a square door Hoover 800 (don't know the number) from about 1979 (this was about 1988 btw). I of course plumbed it in for her. What a great day for me!

L series re balance. The machine in the vid spins well but don't be fooled it was a matter of luck how balanced they were and they could quite literally take a walk. Hardly any distribution was the problem. I believe the early ones span at around 420rpm and later models at about 550rpm. The short spin was useless and often used to leave a puddle in the bottom of the drum.

Though not strictly Indesit (Colston Ariston) this machine has a similar look about it! I wonder if they used Indesit parts??

Rob

Hi all. My aunty had an L5 indesit when I was little. It lasted about 9 years, suprising as she used to overload it constantly! I loved that machine, would sit and watch it for ages, hers had a spin of 380rpm....things came out still dripping wet but she had a morphy richards spin dryer that she spun the laundry after it was washed. She repaced the L5 with a 800 spin indesit, don't know the model number but it had 3 dials and the navy blue facia.

Spin draining is awesome! Queue the philips, and schulthess machines! Where i live me and jon visited our local launderette which has 30yr old schuthess machines that spin drain. Theres nothing quite like seeing it in person! amazing springs to mind! Especially as the rinse water was 3/4 of the way up the door!!!!!

and another variation on the L6 theme - they seemed to produce a load of different machines based on this style..

the Indesit L6SGBV

Spin drain

My 1982 indesit 2093 never vibrated at all when spinning!I found the spin draining very efficient and several friends who had indesits were also very happy with them.
A friend of mine who bought her first automatic bought an 800rpm indesit after seeing how quiet mine was.
Oh dear,if she had been on Heathrows flight path,it wouldn't have been so noisey!!

a bit more info on the Indesit L5LGB

the info is taken from the October 1977 edition of WHICH Consumer magazine.

cost : £126, but down to £75 (made in Italy).

dimensions : 86.5 x 64 x 53.5cm.

water supply : cold fill only.

stacking : no; can't be used under a worksurface either.

mobility : no wheels, but can be levelled.

programmes : no HLCC markings; heater settings may be varied for similar programmes; presoak; prewash; rinse and spin.

spinning : no spin delay; no seperate spin.

max cotton load : 4kg (9lb).

cotton programme : takes 1.5 hours, uses 2.1 kWh and 75 litres of water.

synthetic programme : takes 1 hour, uses 0.5kWh and 75 litres of water.

performance:

cotton load - fair.
syntehtic load - better than average.
creasing synthetic - moderate.
spinning efficiency - poor.
spin speed - 360rpm.

convenience:

instruction book - fairly poor.
using controls - fair, but several controls to set.
detergent dispenser - on top of machine, not removable, none for fabric conditioner, lid had sharp edges.
loading clothes - satisfactory, but door catch awkward, right hinged door acceptable.
noise - acceptable.
filter/lint trap - self cleaning pumpwith easy access to clear blockages.

Radio and TV interference : satisfactory.

Safety : electrically satisfactory.

WHICH VERDICT : very cheap (to purchase) and being phased out, so you may find even lower prices. But spinning very poor and machine inconvenient to use - clearer instructions would help.

All in all a bit of a mixed report, but the machine was a nearly 10year old design and had held its own throughout the 1970's in the face of Hoover Matchboxes and Hotpoint Liberators. It must have done something right to have lasted so long.

hope the info proves useful
Paul
