all the parts are in the machine. i hooked up the power and its like the machine is dead.. does the water heater have to be full for the machine to power up?

While I've never actually seen the Youngstown mechanicals I cannot believe that it has a float in the water heater that all kills all power unless its filled. The Apex DW certainly didn't. Do you have a wiring diagram? That dishwasher should be really simple to work on. Have you check with a mutlimeter to see that power is getting from the wall socket - through the cord - to the start switch (if there is a start switch) and from there to the timer?

well ill play with it again this weekend.. im thinking there is a glitch in the lid switch. that would almost have to be the problem.. although i can see now this one will be just like the laundromat.. the ones i want to play with the most are the ones the give me the hardest time.. one thing i did see that i thought was really cool is that the motor has a tag on it that says packard by general motors

Packard motor

That's because GM bought the electric motor division of Packard Motor Car Company years before. They still use the name on spark plug wires. The "Six Degrees of Separation" amongst corporations is amazing

And if that's not enough, then sing along with this choir:"Youngstown kitchens are keeping the lead!" How's that for a convention song?!

I was telling my Mom about this movie. She says she can't believe how those dishes that were painted with food and left to dry could have come clean. She said her recollection of that machine is that it didn't clean well at all.

What I remember about it was watching the water go around through the window, but I was pretty young at the time. I was busy terrorizing my sister by breaking all her kitchen appliance toys. I guess many of us started with this fascination at a very young age. LOL.

Early 70's

Chachp,

My sister got a "dishwasher" for christmas one year. It had the "tea set" along with it. You hooked it up to the kitchen sink faucet (rubber boot over the faucet) and "let'er rip". It had a basket in it that all of the plates and cups and silverware fit into that rotated. Clear plastic top and a yellow bottom. Since we lived out in the country, this toy was used very seldom as Dad was always concerned about having to pump the water from the well and run it down the septic tank. I got the bright idea to take it out in the yard. My sister and I loved playing with it. (Well, I did more than my sister.) One day, Jan left it laying where she shouldn't have and Dad ran over it with a load of hay in the truck. Needless to say, the crusher got it.

I used to love cooking up mudpies and seeing how long it would take that dishwasher to get them clean again....oh the memories....

Duetboy,

Are you talking about a play Youngstown dishwasher?

I have one and it is fun to play with. It's very realistic. You hook it up to the faucet and run the drain hose over the sink. When you turn the water on, the center tube spins and washes the dishes. The water drains out of the bottom. It looks exactly like the one on the video including the racks. It even came with the plastic dishes, cups and silverware. The only difference is the entire top is clear plastic instead of just the small window.

It's quite fun to play with!

Sounds to me like Jeff's talking about a Kenner Easy-Wash dishwasher. One of these days I'm going to have to get one--I've wanted one since they first came out like, 40 years ago!
And while I'm at it, I might as well start looking for a Suzy Homemaker dishwasher. Will go well with my SuperOven!

Toy Youngstown DW? Ooooh, got pix?

I believe it was a Kenner...

Chachp,

I believe it was a kenner as veg-o-matic relates. I know that it had a black spray tube (stationary) that went across the bottom and up the side. The holes were on one side and then on the arm that went up the side. If I also remember, there was a compartment to put soap into and a rubber push button that "pumped" the soap into the middle of the dishwasher. It made a few suds but not many. I know I sure had fun with it!

Have you checked eBay for the Kenner Dishwasher? They show up from time to time. I have seen some that have never even been taken out of the box.
