Montgomery Wards by Norge question

My aunt has one of those fantastic Norge monsters that she's replacing for Christmas and giving to me!!! She says that it's not spinning right, the clothes are coming out wetter than they used to and she has to spin it twice before putting it in the dryer... She used to have the matching dryer up until a year or so ago and it died and was replaced with a BOL Whirlpool. According to her, that's about when the washer started to act up and not spin right. I know there's a possibility that the new dryer just happens to take a lot longer to dry to capacity/air flow differences, but if it were the washer, what might the problem be? Could the clutch pads be worn out? Would it be an impossible fix? I know these machines are a b*tch to work on because they pretty much need to be completely dissassembled in order for any work to be done, but it's quickly becoming my favorite toploader of all time even over the Unimatic! (Shocking, I know...) Thanks for any help or info about how to save this beast!!!

P.S. This isn't the actual machine, this is as close as I can find, her machine looks just like this except it has push buttons for the water temps.

Checkrate/Likes Our old Frigidaire from the late 70,s or early 80's was doing the same thing,It had the original belt,I adjusted it a couple of times, finally it had to be replaced,I made the mistake of getting one from the auto parts store,it was a little too tight,so when it spun it sounded like it was going in to orbit,the transmission couldn't take it and it got grease on the clothes.

Checkrate/Likes I don't think she's had any work done on it, so it could be the belt, but wouldn't that affect agitation as well? She hasn't said anything about it, but then again, she doesn't even know where the filter goes...

Checkrate/Likes The Frigidaire agitated fine,but in the spin cycle the slipping belt just wouldn't let it get up to the proper RPM's,It had a kinda difficult adjustment,it was spring loaded and had different slots to set the lever in to adjust it,if its never been adjusted,that may be all it needs,the Norge may by completely different. Mark

Checkrate/Likes *ooooh a Tragic Chef.* any chance of getting a closer shot of the controls? Pretty please....... ~it and it got grease on the clothes. OMG do Norges still die that way? My mother bought a house in 1973 that had a Norge in it. It died just a few years later. It got grease all over the clothes!

Checkrate/Likes It sounds like a belt problem to me. I LOVE those Wards/Norge/Tragic Chef machines! So much fun and so much noise! (I've got two in my collection)

Checkrate/Likes Jaime, couldn't something binding cause a slow-down in the spin? Perhaps a bad bearing that is not too audible, or a dragging brake? Sounds like you will simply have to go through a process of elimination with it to get it right.

Checkrate/Likes It sounds like the Norge washer is experiencing separation anxiety. She is mourning the loss of her dryer mate, and doesn't go for the Whirlpool BOL. Maybe if she were to meet some newer dryers.... Sorry, I just woke up and my brain works weird at this time of the morning.
