Can you stitch these two lint filters on the opposite washer and still work?

I beg to disagree.

Yes if the Hotpoint is really a rebadged GE and you lift the machine's top and switch the filter flumes. I've done it.

Re: I agree with:

Ken "bajaespuma" because look at all the Retro-Fits that a lot of the Guys have done with several of their Washers. It is basically all in the same Brand/Models, except for some having the Filter Flow Pan and Clothes Guards and others having the Self-Clean Filter Ring, in place of the Clothes Guards. This would also be true about the JC Penneys Penncrest Models, since they were Manufactured by GE as well.

Please, "vcontreras" keep us informed about your findings of your own experimenting around, with changing the Filter Ring and the Clothes Guards, between the GE & Hotpoint Washers.

Peace, Great Fun Times with experimenting and success stories, Steve

What I'm wondering is...

will the old metal clothesguards fit on newer wash baskets. I want to change out the old rusty basket in my GE, but I want to keep the metal clothesguard instead of a plastic one.

similar to that. Mine is held on by little plastic clips though.
