Oh Jeff......RISK IT!!!!

Jeff,

When I moved to Dimondale/Holt with idiot Corey back in 2000, this is the exact set that I had in white. They came in to the store as a "trade" with literally NOTHING wrong with them. I had to replace the belt, the hoses, the lamps on the washer, and a new belt and cord on the dryer, and later still all the lamps got done as well.

I traded these around 2002 ( READ: STUPIDLY) for a set of Maytag 806's that weren't nearly as cool because they had a larger capacity, and yet again idiot talked me out of them, because the dryer started taking a little longer than it did previously to dry.

Jeff, you and Michael should run to get them...I know were not as close as we used to be...but I can promise that you will NEVER regret EVER getting them, as they are IMHO the living end of 1960's Kenmore-Whirlpool ingenuity....

Go man.....

Chad

Agitator orig?

programcomputer's profile picture
I do have one minor thing....to add...

Is that agitator original to the machine? Maybe It's been that long but I remember the agitator being white...???

Wait, never mind... on further thought in the "wayback machine"...the original was a squash orange color, and I changed it to a newer white Surgilator because I thought that it made it wash better. And It gave me two different kinds of agitators to play with...

yeesh I'm only 30....is my memory "that" bad?

Look like 1965's to me. Just need a scrubber cap for that agitator and take care not to break those (by now very brittle) option buttons!. They look to be in great condition and are easy machines to restore anyway. IMO those were the very best dryers ever.

You guys are a little paranoid - trust me you wont be needin' heet to pick up the set. I got you're email and stumbled upon the boards here (obviously). There are some really great vintage machines here and from what I've read a pretty tight community. If you have any questions about the set, please go ahead and post them or reply to the ad and I'll be happy to answer them for you. I wasn't sure of the year - it's interesting to learn a little more about them before I sell them off. The washer is working perfectly - I just used it to do a few loads, however a few months ago the dryer started acting up. The drum spins (I thought it was the belt, so I replaced it and figured out it had nothing to do with the motor) and it lights up - however it doesn't stay lit (it must be the thermostat?).

My family had an extra washer and dryer that they weren't using, so, even though they are nice machines, decided not to have the dryer repaired. They're both in pretty good shape for being so old, and as I'm sure you're aware of - they're solid, quality made machines. I've posted another pic of the washer to give you a better idea of the controls. I figured they would probably be easier to sell as set - and since I have another pair, they should stay together.

Later on

Just go get these, if someone is close to this location and has a home for them! If you show respect to the people that live around there, they will show you respect in return. If you act afraid of the people there, it will piss them off. And rightly so.

I would go for these myself, but I own them in the 800 Series. I bought these for $10.00 at a church sale and spent close to $1000.00 on the restorations in 2003.

The Lady K's will make someone a nice set.

This seems to happen everytime I find a machine on Craigslist. There's another person on here who did the same thing. He posted two never-used Kenmores on Craigslist. I posted about it on here and, all of the sudden, they want at least $1,000 for something that had little worth to them before. I noticed they are back on Craigslist again too several months later. Really too bad.

Situation 1: Person is trying to sell a machine on Craigslist for $50. Someone (possibly from this site) emails him and says "Wow, that's a great machine. You should check out automaticwasher.org. Someone there would LOVE to get their hands on that one! Seller checks out website and suddenly decides he should raise his price to $500.

Situation 2: An auction on eBay is offering some pastel colored washer/dryer set. People start emailing seller about auction, claiming that is their "dream set", and "what I wouldn't give to have that". Of course these comments show up at the bottom of the auction and anyone that reads them now thinks there's a goldmine in their basement. Remember the $2K Maytag set? All this attention given the sellers only makes them think they have something that is worth more than it is. There's nothing wrong with alerting us when there's something interesting on Craigslist or eBay that one of us may be interested in. The issue is when people start emailing the sellers, drooling all over the place, even if you have no intention of buying it anyway. Just leave the sellers alone and let the person who is serious about the purchase deal with them.

I doubt these machines will be out in the alley like the ad said...

Still I wonder about the email he got and how he found this place. There's been some strange goings on over on the vacuum site with regards to certain individuals stalking it, the same thing could be happening here.
Some people ain't happy until they make everyone else miserable.

Good news on the dispenser...I just got one this weekend! I went to Mark's warehouse and he had a couple of them. I bought a few other great parts too. Thanks so much for thinking of me though! That's really sweet! So hang onto that dispenser because, even though you may not use it, it's still nice to have all the parts.

By the way, I did see a Hoover portable dryer in the warehouse in coppertone. I don't know if it's Mark's or not or if it's even for sale, but you may check that out. I may be going back there in a few weeks to pick up a few more things so if you need it let me know.

lurking

Well, I thought that I was clear when I explained above how I came upon the forums, however, I guess, I didn't.

Someone other than jons1077 contacted me with a very brief message, something like, "I would like to know if the item you listed is still available." - pretty generic. To check if email was sent from a spam bot, I did a search for their email address, and listed in the results was the forum archive - tada, there you have it.

Well, I did some searching and found the manuals to go along with the machines - they are all in pretty good condition. I've made incomplete samples of them and you can find them all here:

And with that, yes, I am going to raise the price to $400 dollars for the pair. Like I said in my initial ad - the washing machine is in good working order - and I'm still using it. If I sell the pair - then I have to go pick up another washer and install it. This is the first item that I have ever posted for sale on Craigslist - and thought that maybe by setting the price low and specifically asking people to, "make me an offer," that someone would reply with a reasonable request. All it really ended up doing was setting your expectations - and making me look bad when asking for more - my mistake. All the interest I've had for the pair came from this forum - and this is a pretty cool site, it's too bad that the owner is planning to take it down.

So, if anyone is still interested, please send me an email.

Thanks

Too bad, indeed.

They are pretty machines, but $400 is way too much (in my opinion). I could maaaaaaybe see $200 - if they are in fact in decent operating condition - and, again, the seller himself said: "however a few months ago the dryer started acting up. The drum spins (I thought it was the belt, so I replaced it and figured out it had nothing to do with the motor) and it lights up - however it doesn't stay lit (it must be the thermostat?)."

I mean, they are vintage machines... what's to say that something (like the center-post or base plate) doesn't break a week or a month or a year down the road...?

This might be a good reason to think about a membership fee for this site. I bet even a $5 or $10 fee would stop alot of this from happening. I know on several occasions I've seen this happen. Someone has old machine for sale that they think is worthless; someone tips them off or they find the site; price goes way up and we get taken advantage of. Maybe it's not that big a deal but it does make me pretty angry when I stew on it for a while. It's just bad business to do that to people. Sorry...thanks for listening to me.

It seems these boards only allow you to post relative links - the text ones are correct (www.automaticwasher.org/''... is appended to the front of each one of the 'a href=' tagged links).

Yes, I do have access to another washer - however, since I didn't need it, I didn't have to drag it over here - so, I saved myself the trouble. If I'm not able to sell the set for a reasonable price, where, I basically won't be losing money (in time and effort), it's really not worth the hassle for me. I can spend $50 - $100 dollars, have the dryer repaired, and I'm sure I'll get at least a few more good years out of it.

James, I apologize for posting that the site was going down - I only read a few of the threads, and that was my understanding (good to hear, even though after all the flaming, general rudeness, whining, and sentiment that keeping people ignorant of this site and it's community is a good thing, I'll be happy never to 'lurk' here again).

Happy Holidays

But first let me say I agree with what laundress said, so guys my advice here is to let this 1965 Kenmore set go to the crusher, we've seen quite a few 1965 LK's over the past few years anyway. Don't be taken to the cleaners and don't condone this kind of behavior.
