Hi every one,
what are your views on the dyson 2 drums?

i think it's the best i've ever had and seen because it's massive and it washes all my clothes perfectly not a stain left even if i put it on the dirt cycle, i mostly tend to put it on the dirt and stains cycle at 40-60 degrees. The spin performance is best as the clothes are so dry, i know this because me and my friend have the same dryer and he's also got a 1400 rpm washer but my clothes dried 20 minutes bfore his and they were similar clothes.
Unbelievable but true!

Welcome to the Disscuss-O-Mat. Are you talking about the Dyson Controtator? You should ask the user named 2DrumsAllergy. He owns 2 Contrarotator machines, the CR01 Memory model and the CR02 Allergy model. There is also a CR02 Flowcheck model. Could you video a full cycle of the machine?

Oh and which version of the machine do you own?

Welcome

Hi dyson2drums,
Welcome to Automaticwasher.org.

I have two wonderful Dyson washers, a CR01 Memory and a CR02 2-Drums Allergy. They definitely outwash ordinary single drum front loaders and the cycle times are very fast without compromising on wash performance or load size. I agree with you about the spin performance which I feel is due to a number of factors; the large drum diameter gives greater G-Force, firstly the huge number of micro holes, the large surface area of the drum and lastly the long spin duration 6-7 minutes at top speed on Cottons cycles. The only machine that compares with my Dyson's spin performance is my 1800RPM Miele W3985WPS.

I hope to make a video of the CR02 over the holiday period, if I get peace to do it.

David

Hi Folks,
I'm making a video of the Dyson CR02 2-Drums Allergy washing a 7Kg load of colour-fast cottons at 60°C. Its recording as I type this and hopefully it will turn out OK. I will upload it to YouTube! as soon as I can.

Dyson Videos

Hi Folks,
Well I done a video late last night; I set the camera up and started recording then pressed the start button on the Dyson and went to bed. Unfortunately a few minutes later my Mum got up and went to the toilet, she noticed the kitchen lights on and thinking I had forgotten to turn them off she switched them off. As a result I have recorded two minutes of the cycle and the rest is in total darkness lol.

Sorry about that.

I will do another video later tonight and this time Mother has been warned not to turn the lights off.

I will let everyone know when the videos are on YouTube!

David

Great vid of the Dyson. It looks pretty rough on the laundry. Does it damage the load at all? Not sure I would want to put delicate stuff in the contrarotaing drum.

There are loads of these washers on Ebay which makes me wonder if they are not that popular. Am I right in thinking that have stopped manufacturing them?

Your CR02 is exactly like mine but mine is the flowcheck version and yours is the allergy model, the cycles are the same.
I am very glad you and I appreciate this washing machine, they clean clothes very well aswell as rinse and extract water as it is AAA!
Thanks for the videos!

Hi This washing machine is amazing it cleans the clothes in the fastest time giving the cleanest wash with a large load and one thing it has never damaged clothes such as beaded tops because there are delicates cycles handwash cycles so no worries and plus there is a special duvet cycle!
Yes Dyson have stopped manufacturing them but they still service them!
I wouldn't really say they are unpopular because some of those on ebay are second hand washers, badly used washers or just broken washers but sometimes there can be a good washer once in a while.
By the way the fast contrarotation is only for cottons/synthetics cycles.
I would not give this washer up until it breaks down which it never has! VERY RELIABLE!
Thanks everyone.

Wow! Great videos! I guess you're right. I shouldn't be asking for videos. If I just wait, peoploe will upload videos and I don't have to nag them. Those are great videos. Do you have ones of the rinse uploading as I type? Your washer is pretty...interesting. It makes an interesting sound that sounds like a blender and a girl screaming. I will comment more on the washer after I'm done watching the videos.

Post# 257212 , Reply# 26   1/2/2008 at 07:09 (5,956 days old) by funguy10 ()

Wow! Those WERE great videos. But I have some questions as to how the machine works. I saw the machine actually does not Contrarotate esclusively like I thought it did. It starts out by doing normal back and forth tumbling and it ends that way too. During those times it sounds like a normal Front-Loader. Does it Contrarotate during rinse? How does the rinse action work? Do you have videos of the rinse cycle? Is 1100 R.P.M the fastest spin speed the machine has? When I saw the interim spin stop, the clothes were still stuck to the walls. Does the machine do normal tumbling or Contrarotating to get them fluffed? Did a dryer match for this machine come out? I heard it did and it used the same cyclonic technology as Dyson vacuums instead of a lint filter to get rid of lint. Which cycle was that on the videos? How long does the cycle last? Did this machine ever come to the U.S.A.? What is the difference between the CR02 Flowcheck and The CR02 Allergy and what is the "Memory" in CR01 Memory? Is the memory the only version of the CR01? Sorry if that seems like a lot of questions, but I'm curious.

Post# 257217 , Reply# 27   1/2/2008 at 07:59 (5,956 days old) by rolls_rapide (.)

The Dyson's top spin speed was 1400rpm.

There never was a Dyson Tumble Drier actually produced, though there was 'gossip' of one being designed.

The 'Memory' versions were basically the same machines , but with user memory to store favourite programmes with options.

Funguy10: You annoy everone with demanding videos. How about YOU make some?

2DrumsAllergy: WOW great videos. Very big thanks for you making the videos. Its interresting when it begin with the contrarotation you hear a special sound from the machine. These machines was also sold here in Sweden, but only through special import. They were extremly expensive. I couldnt afford buy one, i bought a Siemens instead. Sadly the Siemens broke down totally after 2 and a half years use. I then bought an Elektro-Helios that (so far) works perfect.

Post# 257232 , Reply# 30   1/2/2008 at 10:14 (5,956 days old) by funguy10 ()

You're right. I should stop nagging for videos. When I get my mini-camcorder I got for Christmas to download videos to my computers I will video my Kenmore Oasis. Also, you are right about the CR02 sounds. It sounds a lot like a normal Front-Loader while it is tumbling back & forth. I always thought the washer Contrarotated exclusively. At 1:06 in the first video The sound you are talking about can be heard. It is kind of quiet grind sound before the machine actually stats Contrarotating. When the machine is Contrarotating it sounds kind of like a countertop blender. The laundry moves around like it is in one too. Sometimes though, it looks like the load is tumbling on a diagonal axis. Also, you can sometimes hear a whine like a girl screaming. Also the laundry is somtimes balled up at a diagonal point at the bottom when the machine pauses instead of right at the bottom. At 3:07 in the second video you can hear the machine make a whine sound kind of like a power drill and see the laundry move slightly as the Contrarotation finishes and it goes back to normal back & forth tumbling to finish the wash.

Post# 257234 , Reply# 31   1/2/2008 at 10:41 (5,956 days old) by funguy10 ()

At 5:10 in the second video the wash is done and the machine sits there soaking for about 1 minute. At 6:07, the machine tumbles to distribute the load once and soaks for 1 more minute. At 7:07 the machine grinds once and distributes the load and the drain pump comes on to drain out the wash water. At 7:30, the pump gets louder as the water is done draining out. Also, I was shocked to see that the Contrarotator does a neutral drain and that the pump makes a gentle whoosh instead of that "Chug,Chug,Chug" noise the pump makes in most Front-Loaders. If you listen at the very end of the second video and throughout the third video you can hear the pump turn off for and instant every now and then. At 0:55 the machine is done distributing and turn continuously pulling the laundry to the sides until the machine begins to gain speed at 1:30. The machine can be heard whining up as it gets faster and the drum appears to vibrate a lot until it gains 1100 R.P.M. speed at 2:45. I like how the machine spins so balanced and quiet. It spins at full speed until it begins to wind down at 3:34. The motor shuts down at 4:03 and the drum comes to a full stop at 4:10.

So, yeah. In conclusion, pretty interesting sounding machine.

Apologies

Hi Folks,
Apologies for not getting back sooner I have been extremely busy.
Also I see I have a number of e-mails to answer which I will in due course so please bear with me.

I will respond to your comments later when I have a little more time.

I think I may have placed the camera to close to the machine as it sounds so loud which it really is not. Also after uploading and YouTube processing there is a distinct orange tinge has appeared which is not apparent on the original video files, don't know what's going on there! Hopefully I will do better next time.

Thanks.

Excellent, David! :)

Thank you very much for the videos – I had a great big grin on my face all the time, especially when it started to turn… and then when it did its unique little trick! :)

My Dad was pretty interested in seeing one work, too, as he’d not seen one. He used to work in retail and minor repairs – he can still fix old Hoovers and Electrolux vacuum cleaners and 80s and 90s Hotpoint motors, brushes, pumps, etc. :)

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but I can see aspects of other makes of washing machine in there – 80s and 90s Hotpoints, Hoover New Waves… even a bit of Miele (the ‘bounciness’ – hehe :))… as well as the unique Dyson engineering (the contrarotating) and wonderful aesthetic and ergonomic design.

Take care, and Happy New Year to you! :)

Regards,

Carl :)

A Bit Bored, so I Wrote This! :)

I just wanted to say this, but I hope this has not been written here already or elsewhere, but this is basically how the Dyson washing machine works in terms of their wash action. (This is all off the top of my head, so my apologies if I miss some bits out, etc. :) I also know many of you know much of this anyway – I’m just a bit bored and want to ‘exercise’ my brain for once! :))

In a normal washing machine, the clothes tumble (rise and fall) of course. There is some agitation, as there is movement and the clothes rub against each other and the drum. Add in a water jet (e.g. Jetsystem) and you have ever more ‘actions’.

The way the Dyson washing machine works is this:

With contrarotating drums – and this only applies at certain stages of the cycle, as the Dyson will work normally at times, as shown in David’s videos – the two drums turn in opposite directions. What this effectively does is twist and flex the fabric, which can allow a better method of washing over a traditional tumbling action. Dyson conducted many tests (rigs) to ascertain what they found was the best way o getting clothes clean.

What Dyson found during their tests was that this twist and flex action is very similar to hand washing. Indeed, if I remember correctly, hand washing is what Dyson tried in order to see just how effective hand washing was, and it was their belief that trying to get an automatic washing machine to mimic hand washing would most likely produce the best results. That is, in effect, what a Dyson washing machine does – hand washing in an automatic washing machine! Other ways of washing tried during testing, I believe, included punching clothes to see if that would work well! (Sounds a bit like “Beats as it sweeps as it cleans”! hehe :))

Other issues that Dyson wanted to tackle included the dispenser, which has no seal on other machines (as far as I am aware). However, the Dyson’s dispenser does have a seal to prevent leaks. This, still, is a rather silly omission, and I believe some engineers still express concerns at the lack of a seal on an area of a washing machine that could – and does! – leak. No area of any plumbed-in appliance should be without some form of appropriate seal to prevent flooding.

This leads me on to the door seal, which is quite different in Dyson washing machines. If I remember correctly, this was designed to reduce odours and mould, and Dyson made it quite different to other machines in many respects.

The large capacity was a selling point when the machines appeared. I know my Mum wanted one, as did I, because of the large capacity and unique features. I had all the brochures and tried to learn as much about them as I could. Sadly, before we could get one – and I was saving up – Dyson ceased manufacture, which I think was a great shame. Yes, like anything, they have their issues and perhaps weaknesses, but we felt a Dyson would have been the machine for us. They may have had their faults that had to be corrected, but at least Dyson did correct them for customers. :)

What we had to get instead was a Miele, which we are very pleased with. :) If I could, I would have a Dyson as well! :)

Correct me, David, or anyone else if I’ve got this wrong! :)

The rinses are just normal tumbling no contrarotation.
The time for one rinse is approximatels eight minutes x2 or x3.

The way the machine spins is beautiful, I have never seen such a unique spin, and noise for that matter. The distribution looked great, and when it ramps up to maximum speed the sound is amazing. As carlstock said, the spin perhaps reminded me of the hotpoint 95 series.

Wonderful machine.

spin cycle

dyson2drums's profile picture
Hi
The machine spins at full speed for 6 to 7 minutes, no wonder they're so dry because some machines only spin at full speed for 2 to 3 minutes. It's also because of the larger drum and the perforations (holes).
Thanks if that helps.

Hi 2DrumsAllergy

it's amazing to see that how the machines were so same apart from the colours and a few extra options!
This machine may be seen as a bad machine for using a lot of water but it uses the right amount for the load!
BY looking at the hoover vision it's like a dam in there! it's as if it is the hoover dam.
Have a look at the pic 3/4 down the page!
Thanks

OMG... Great Videos... It is an amazing washer.... Does it tend to tangle clothes excessively or about the same as a normal front loader...

Funguy... YOU AREN"T THAT FUN!! Did you ever think that the rinse would be similar to the wash... With no detergent???? Seriously dude... Get a life

I just wanted to know whether it tumbles or Contrarotates during the rinse. There is nothing wrong with curiosity other than the fact that it killed the cat.

Hello Funguy, Nothing wrong with curiosity. That is why we are all here. But it wouldn't hurt to ask nicely. Always say please and it wouldn't hurt to say thankyou to those who post videos, especially as it takes time and effort to make those videos, and most of us have busy lives.

Also be glad there is a wealth of information in this site I was once a curious kid and I did not have the internet in those days to satiate my curiosity. I am 30 and only recently did I discover this online community and many things I have wondered about I am still finding out.

Those were great videos! Thank you for funally showing some of this machine's rinse action! Now if we could only see a full 1,600 R.P.M. spin.
