Anyone have any good suggestions for a new W/D set, with a cost of around $1500, give or take a few $$?? Prefer a washer with a window (who wouldn't??) but not mandatory. Dryer can be gas or electric since I have both. Current one is electric.

We just got into our new house and there were older Atlantis machines. Needless to say, the washer is dented, has sticker residue on it, makes a loud noise while agitating, and has an agitator (which I personally cannot stand). The dryer works well, if you can figure out where to put the dial. The previous owners had drawn a line on the dial, and then covered it up with white medical tape. You can't just put the regular arrow where you want it and press start. You have to jimmy and wiggle the knob until you are able to press the start button and turn it on. Then, I have no idea what settings it is on (sensor, timed drying, etc).

I will make do with these until I can find something good. I bought some floor model Adora's at Home Depot but they came damaged, so I sent them back. Got a great deal (just a little over $1000 with a $100 rebate).

Thanks for your input, I look forward to reading them! :-)

Hi lovely lady!
Glad to hear you are in your new home!
Best regards to you and your family. Your kids were delightful in the pic of them that was posted!

Happy and healthy new year.

The lady asked a question....tap, tap, tap.........

Thanks Toggs!

Yes, we are finally unpacking the last of the boxes and evertyhing is getting put away (it's just been a little over 1 week). I did get some nice SS Frigidaire/Electrolux appliances in my kitchen though. The convection oven works wonders (thanks to all who helped me out on the other board with advice on how to use it!)

I just will take my time looking for a new washer/dryer. The one I have is OK, just a pain. And when you wash 1-2 loads a day, it is even worse!

Thankfully, the kids start their new school on Wed. They have 4 year old Kindergarten here so even my little one will be gone half the day (WHOO HOO for me!). LOL

How do you feel about Frigidaire for a front-loader, then?

They seem to be very reasonably priced and come in several different sizes...

I don't recall reading any nightmare stories about them here.

That's the info I want to hear, no horror stories! That's the last thing I need to deal with. After I purchased those Adora's, then I read online about how many people had problems with them. I was kinda glad that I had to return them. Although, there were an equal number of people who liked them. I know not everyone will like the same thing (or have the same experience with it) but I'd just like to be sure that what I am spending my money on isn't total junk.

Hi Heather. I am sending a link to a Frigidaire front loader with a matching dryer. I have the GE version of the washer and it works great.

And here is a link to a top loading Maytag made by Whirlpool or a "Whirltag" and I am sure there is a matching dryer for it.
I have this machine too and it works great.

I think all front load machines have thier quirks, pros and cons and they all require a new approach by the user to doing laundry.

I have the large Duet pair I purchased last February and they've been fine so far but there are a few things I'd change if I could, especially choices in cycle times. I also am skeptical that my Duet washer will go for years without needing any attention like many top loaders, especially the older ones, can.

If water conservation isn't a big priority then there are many choices in top loaders. If you are leaning towards a front loader, I say the bigger the better. Even with just two of us in our household I can end up cramming towels into the drum of our Duet. I can only imagine the large loads that a family can generate.

If you are concerned about time consumed in getting a load done, then top loaders are better about that. While front loaders may spin at higher RPM's to reduce drying time, they still can take a long time to wash and even with the shorter drying time the entire process can take longer than with your conventional top loader even if it doesn't spin the clothes as dry as a front loader.

I did a lot of research before I bought my Duet pair and ended up avoiding some of the smaller Kenmores due to bad PR on those. I wanted volume and the Duet beat out the Frigidaire Affinity models in that regard, both washer and (especially) dryer.

Glad to hear all went well with the move!

Yes, we entered Cheeseland. Jim got another promotion but it came with a stipulation that we move to WI. His office is in Racine.

We are 6 miles from Wheatland, where there were tornados today. My kids school has unknown damage at this time. There is no power there and TV crews cannot get back there to see. It flattened 6 houses and has damaged many others. We were so lucky that it was just west of us.

We moved in on 12/30 but have alredy been back in Schaumburg shopping! The movers broke some items and I needed to go replace them. Since I don't know Milwaukee, I just went back down to IL. Really, we are only 8 miles from I94 and about 6 miles from the IL border. I can get to Gurnee in about 25 minutes and Antioch in about 10.

The Whirly Duet's or, if they are too pricey, the Speed Queen F/L's.

Heather, I'm glad y'all are safe. If/when you can, update us on how the kids' school fared. If it got some sort of damage, I can imagine it's a little bit unsettling for them especially at their ages. Bob

Check out the Consumer Reports 2008 thread on this forum. It appears Samsung (Amana) came in dead last in the testing CR's German counterparts did on front loaders.

I think you'd be safer with a Frigidaire or Whirlpool-made pair, Frigidaire probably being the more affordable make.

Thanks everyone

My kids school fared OK. No major damage (see link) and they went back today. They just got power at 5PM last night. If you go to the main page on the link I sent, you can see pics of the houses.

Also, thanks for the W/D opinions. My husband decided that the TV/speakers needed to be first so it will be a little while before I get some new ones. Although today the knob of the dryer came off (looks like it has cracked and tried to be repaired many times) and when I put it back on, I couldn't get it to start. After about 5 minutes of taking it on and off, and pushing and pulling it back and forth, I was able to get it started. ALthough I have no idea what cycle it is on. LOL

Another question

How about Cabrios? I can get the 4.5 CU FT washer and matching dryer for $1637 (plus 5.5% tax and $12 delivery). Extended warranty is $358 for both machines.

I could also get a Frigidaire Affinity set for $1389.

Saw my first F & P machines and was in love with the top loading washer and dryer. That was nice but the lid, etc seemed cheap since it was all plastic.

These are from a local dealer, not Home Depot, Sears, Lowes, etc.

F&P plastic lids/tops are plenty sturdy. And they won't rust. :-)

F & P

You have a F & P, right? How do you like it? Is it a current model (so I can take a peek the next time I am there)?

I have two sets. A 1999 GWL08 and DE04 (which my grandmother has been using since 2004),
and a 2004 IWL12 (equivalent to the current IWL16) with DEGX1 dryer (equivalent to the current DEGX2).

This is the GWL08, pics taken on 9/26/2007. The plastic doesn't look bad for 8 years old, huh? :-)

However, you did say you don't like agitator machines. The AquaSmart is equivalent to the wash-plate
Oasis/Cabrio/Bravos (bit smaller capacity, two dispensers instead of three, different styling & cycles/options,
one pump with divertor valve instead of two pumps), so if you have any concerns about them then it also
may not be a good choice for you.

Any top loader is going to use more water than a front loader unless it's horizontal axis drum.It will also use more electricity than a front loader. As far as Consumer Reports is concerned, the repair record on the Samsung and Amana can not be taken seriously because at first, the Amanas were the real Neptunes which were a nightmare to put it lightly then Samsung had a recall on their top of the line models due to the issue with using silver.some folks are allergic to it and to be cautious, they recalled them. They also haven't been out long enough to have a repair record(5 years)in front loaders.I have seen a lot of refurbished Oasis and Cabrios at the Sears outlet stores. As many of them as the Collipsos when they were out.The service tech there told me it's the mother board and motors that are more comon than not to fail.

One of the pics didn't come through. The red splotch is Granny's target for running the Regular cycle.

I did like that F & P gives a 2 year warranty with each item. I was just afraid of the plastic but since you say it holds up well, it might be worth a look!

I am just at a loss as to what to get. It seems that everyone has had a bad experience (or known someone) on most of the brands & models out there. Luckily (knock on wood), I have never had any issues with any of my washers and dryers until I moved to this house. The last ones I had were Neptunes and they were one of the first generation. The only thing I didn't like about them was the musty smell if you happened to close the door and didn't let it dry. From what I read online, that still happens with some front loaders.

Really, the only issue on my current dryer is a broken knob (which I can replace all pieces for around $15). My washer works fine (looks like crap) but does not work on the "heavy" load (won't even turn on). Not a major deal since I have to take King sized comforters to the laundry anyway. That is why I was looking at the Cabrio since it is 4.5.

Off to go read more complaints/praise online for other models.

I think you'll find that Kenmores get more of a bad rap today than they ever used to. Especially the front loaders. The larger ones are just fancy Duets but apparently they have more to go wrong.

When going through the on-line opinions you need to read between the lines. A lot of the complaints about pump problems and flooding with FL machines were caused by user error or downright misuse, like overloading so badly that a small sock gets pushed into the outer tub, etc. Sensible people like members of this site don't have those same types of complaints.

The large Frigidaire FL machines tend to be more affordable than their Duet counterparts (and in my opinion they are more attractive) and many here have advised that they are excellent performers. The main thing you need to do is steer clear of GE anything. Sticking to that rule will spare you a ton of grief and regret.

Whirlpool Duet or Kenmore equivalent. they accept huuuge loads, but you have to use a low-sudsing/HE detergent.

Not yet.........

When we moved we sold our house to a relocation company through Jim's work. They hold back a large % of the selling price "just in case" they have to make repairs, etc in order to sell the home. I am waiting to get that back! We just found out that the old house sold and should be closing in about 3 weeks. WHOO HOO~

I will update if/when I find a new set. For now, I am buying a new knob for my broken dryer. It's less than $10 plus shiping to repair. LOL

Maytag Epic

Another model to consider: We purchased the Maytag Epic 9700 in August and it has been great. Home Depot price matched another store and we got one in black for $805.00. This machine is just a Whirlpool Duet under the Maytag trim. It even has a porcelain top. So far, it has been great.
