Saved from the Krusher.

Toggles and I saved this machine this weekend. We brought it to my house in the back of an SUV and went to work on the clean-up. It was pretty dirty, but, still in great shape and an absolute workhorse.

Guess it had a bit of bleach dropped on it over time.
We believe that this machine was rebuilt. The tranny is spray painted grey.

The machine functions perfectly and should last at least another 40+ yrs.

Isn't it amazing how some people are when it comes to filth?
Clorox Clean-Up is still pretty cheap.

You got a great machine and I'm sure she will be shining like new when you get through with her!

Congratulations!

Good Deed

gadgetgary's profile picture
Cleaned out the venting for the person we got the Maytag from. His vent was so clogged, he complained that his old Kenmore dryer took way too long to dry the clothes(that is why he got rid of his washer and dryer). Little did he know that his vent was so clogged that he was lucky he did not have a dryer fire. I don't know how the air flow ever got thru the piping. That is how full the duct was filled with lint.
Guess it goes along with the condition of that Maytag.
Some people just don't know what maintenance really means.

Guuuurll bad lighting in there. Those shadows *SHUDDERS*

Guess who has ME well trained? GadgetBoy was returning the SUV while guess-who broke a nail scrubbing? (Ok it was MY suggestion, but still.......)

The things we do for the luv of washers!

It's funny, but the whole process of seek, attain, win it, secure, transport, install, clean, repair and try-it-out gets easier with each subsequent conquest. [I mean washers, not husbands!]

Methinks there is now a moratorium on Maytags. Time for a Frigidaire or a Whirlpool/Kenmore wig-wag model.

Bigger gap due to use and abuse............

This machine appears to have a rather large gap between the tubs and the lid opening.

Date on back in "magic-marker" states
"OK, 1995". Rebuild date?

It's like a Turkish steam-bath in here.........
My theory is that the rust is due to the long-existing plugged-up dryer vent which may have resulted in a very moist/humid laundry room.

Gary - this is a beauty. I was just reading in the "08 - 10 - 12 Series" repair manual that all the 10 series machines had a built in siphon break - which your machine proudly displayed on the rear shot! Great save ~

Toggs - love the shirt!

Speaking of clogged vents...

sudsmaster's profile picture
When I bought this house I had my hands more than full with tending to the floor refinishing, wall painting, garden/landscaping, plumbing, cooktop, gas connection, etc.

Well.... I replaced the '78 matching GE filterflo electric dryer with a WCI gas model that I'd had in the previous residence (rental house). I was not happy with the performance, and it seemed to get slower and slower in drying, and the cabinet seemed to be getting way too warm.

Finally I replaced it with a Neptune 7500 set, and the first thing the more powerful Maytag blower did was blow a big lint clot out the vent. I think I narrowly missed said dryer/lint fires, as well. Thanks to the Neptune's more powerful blower, it hasn't been an issue since, and I check it ever few years. I also have a louvered vent draft arrestor, so I can tell at a glance (the vent exhaust opening is right by the back porch) if the vent is getting clogged or not. If the louvers are horizontal, there's plenty of air flow.

Unfortunately in all of this I donated the matching GE filterflo electric dryer to charity. Of course I wish I had kept it now, but at the time I had no idea it might be of interest. Still have the Harvest Filterflo washer, though.

A710 ?

Doesn't quite look like a A710 to me. That would be a 2 speed machine with 3 or 4 buttons to control the different speed combinations. It looks more like a A412 (maybe A482) with a '10' series timer knob. I don't remember any 10 series with the silver ring around the control panel and the box around the logo area. Maybe it was rebuilt and had a different panel put on it.
Anyway it's a great save especially because it has the old style (pre 1989) transmission.

oh yes agreed. It's a lower end fabic-matic one speed machine. I'm guessing it's a lovable mutt of different bones all thrown together.

Hey Gary - according to the Maytag Cheat Sheet it appears that LT translates to an October of 1983 machine.

I never understood why Maytag went to the dark control panel. But I must say Toggles could sell it, what with the red stripe shirt for contrast and all. Some guys don't age, they just get more classic, same as the cool machines.

Thanks

Guess this machine was a rebuilt model. It is my understanding that the main knob should be brown, and not ivory.

But that round background is different that the other brown panel Maytag that I have.

Guess it could really be a 412.

Gary, your machine looks more like a FabricMatic--I can see 3 distinct cycles on the timer--unless the 3rd is an auto soak cycle instead of delicate. I remember seeing this model at Lowes in the late 1980s when Lowes was first here, or it may have been the other hardware store that was in the building prior to or after Lowes. anyway, it does look familiar, complete with non-variable water levels.

where the hell did you find that Frankenstein? The motor and damper, timer knob and model # don't match. I guess it's a Frankentag. It's missing the motor cover, too. Careful of an overflow!

Thats a 510 since it has the 3 cycles and fabricmatic. But when I had a 510 it didnt have the bleach dispenser nor the fabric softener dispenser. And the kicker to me is the tub color..mine was blue not white. That washer is still running after all these years. I had the DE710 dryer. Great set thats for sure. I sold them to my aunt back in the 90's...wish I hadnt but I replaced them with a Kenmore Advantage direct drive washer and a Kenmore dryer...both were the 80 series. Good machines but didnt last that long.
Great save and find.

Since this 'Frankentag' might be disguised as a 710, does anyone have any literature on a 510????

Bobby: The motor shield is on order from repairclinic.com.
Guess we were lucky when we tried the bleach dispenser and the tube was not connected.....No jolts from this machine!

Mike: Since your machine had a blue tub, was it regular capacity as opposed to Xlarge? Maybe the tub was changed in this machine too.

Great brochure, and awesome washers:

Model A712 - Tested by Consumer Reports in their 1985 - 1988 issues, and was the last to win Maytag top honors.

Model A612 - Neighbor who lived behind me while growing up had that with the matching dryer. (I used to run it while caring for her pets when she would go away. I also used to run my next door neighbors' 1979 Kenmore 80 when I would take care of their dog.)

Model A512 - My sister has one in her basement, which she used until 2000, when she renovated the house, and had a pair of Neptunes installed. She had to have it hooked up again, when the lock on the door to the Neptune broke, and she could not use it.

Have a good one,
James

A710 or A510?

gadgetgary's profile picture
It now has taken a proud place next to the Neptunes of 1997.

A true workhorse, it shows it true colors.

Wash in the 510, an extra rinse in the Neputune and then to the clothesline(or dryer).
