OK, so much for my self-control mentioned in the "Economic Stimulus" thread earlier. I happened by (well, I WAS within a mile or two) my local "family" owned appliance store, and mentioned to the cuter-than-cute owner that I "might be" looking for a GE Harmony washer. He walked me over to a floor model washer/dryer pair, unused, in white. Quoth he, "I'd really like to move this set, as it's a 2007 set, and I want to make room for a 2008 set. If you'd like it, I'll sell you this floor model pair (washer is a WPGT9360EWW with heater - important to me, dryer is electric DPGT750ECWW) for $1,300.00 with free delivery and haul away". He really doesn't want to split up the pair, since they're last year's models. He said if I wanted an '08 Harmony washer in black, it'd be $915.00

I didn't want white to begin with...I wanted a black washer. But, $1,300.00 for the pair is a really good price. Now, I'm making up reasons to justify getting rid of the 15 year-old Whirlpool dryer...no moisture sensor!...it's noisy...no glass door!

Sigh... should I take advantage of this sale price or not??

Yes, if you want to.

I'd say yes, IMO older model year but still on the showroom machines are a GREAT DEAL, even if you can't get everything like color choices, etc. exactly the way you want them. They don't change that much from year to year, and they money saved is well worth it. When I bought my dirtbike last year, I bought an '04 that was brand new, just sitting in a dealer warehouse... nearly identical to the '07 model, but $2000 less!!

I'd go for the white set. The GE Harmony dryer is one of the better rated for drying and gentleness in drying with speed. These cable up to each other and the washer talks to the dryer telling what you washed. Don't know how well it works.

It works. If you selected a color cycle (as opposed to a fabric cycle) on the washer, the dryer will ask what fabric is to be dried. If you selected a fabric cycle on the washer, all the dryer settings are automatic. We've learned that with some things, particularly heavy cottons like sweatshirts, we have to override the dryness setting or else they won't get dry enough.

There's a cute little graphic sequence where a T-shirt rises up out of the tub on the washer display and disappears, and a moment later it appears on the dryer display and goes into the dryer. That alone is almost worth the price. ;)

I just traded off my Harmony set and went back to a front loader. The Harmony set is very COOL! I think that is why I bought them in the first place. The washer however, was rougher on clothing than I expected it to be. So, I sold them on Ebay and bought a basic front load set.

MRB.

We have the Harmony and it is a Killer machine. We had a T.o.l. frontloader and HATED IT.Not being able control the water level sucks.I know they are water savers and that is fine but the clothes would be damp that is about it.When the machine stops and reverses direction NO water would be dripping from the baffles or anywhere.I did a test I stoped the machine and added about 3 gallons of water to it and it washed great but that is just not do able.Lowes took back the machine after 7 or 8 months and Mom got the Harmony Washer. It is a water saver but you can make it fill up by hitting the Rug-cycle.If you leave it to do a normal wash it takes 50 mins and thats it unlike 2 and half hours for the other one.I love the glass lid and watching it wash it outcleans all of there other machines by a long shot. The Harmony saves water and cleans and you also have control over all the settings.I still would rather have a Frigidare Jet-cone but there hard to find here but so far this washer has been great....
