Maytag A502 washer

The problem with the pump may be a very simple fix. This model Maytag washer has 2 drive belts on the bottom. One drives the pump (located in the front right corner of the machine) and the other drives the transmission (in the center of the machine). If the belt driving the pump has broken, it is fast, simple, and cheap to replace.

To replace Maytag Belts:

1. Unplug the washer and turn off the water valves for safety.
2. Pull the washer out toward you.
3. Tilt the washer back so you can access the bottom (it does not need to lie on its back).
4. The motor is in the front left corner on a spring-loaded sliding mount. By tilting the machine back, the motor slides, releasing tension on the belts.
5. Remove the old belts by sliding them off of their pulleys.
6. Obtain new MAYTAG brand belts (about $23.00). Use only genuine MAYTAG brand belts because they are designed to slip and act as a clutch. If you use generic belts, the motor will overheat and stop, usually when starting the spin cycle.
7. Put new belts on their pulleys.
8. Put the washer back in position and make sure it is level (the feet screw in and out to adjust the level).

The pump rarely fails on these washers. If it does fail, it can be replaced without too much difficulty.

Checkrate/Likes Today is my first day as a member! I love this site! I am trying to find a good home for a Maytag washer, Model # A502 in white. My mother-in-law bought it around 1964, and she says it needs a new pump. She is threatening to sell it to the scrapper! Help me save this cool machine!!! The washer is located in the western suburbs of Chicago. I'll check back soon.

Checkrate/Likes *Update* First of all, I would thank this community for all of the support! This is a knowledgeable community which freely shares that knowledge! Since it was sunny today, we were able to photograph the washer and honor all of the requests for photos. This evening after work, my husband built a small website for the photos of this machine. Please see the link below. The machine was pulled out of the basement and spent a winter outside, so there is some dirt and surface rust. The lid is detached. We have had a number of people email their interest in this machine. My mother-in-law will accept the best offer sent via email and received by Monday April 7, 2008, 5:00 CST.
