So as some of you remember I needed to find a belt-drive Whirlpool or Kenmore for parts for my 1957 Lady Kenmore. Well this little gem showed up on Craigslist and I grabbed it for $25. He's not even gonna make it to the basement, he's gonna get raped for parts right outside here on the side of the garage. But he will make for a beautiful lady.

Oh and I found another washer beauty at the Estate Sales today! While its a bit newer for my tastes, it was in near mint condition and it will be fun to play with for a little bit. I'm going back to the sale tomorrow to pick it up! Yay, I'll post pictures when I get him home.

But first he's the parts machine...

Cool washer!

Too bad it's going for parts... I really hope your restoration goes well, as I'm sure it will.

I think I'll have to move to Minnesota to find some gems like you do Robert. Where did you buy that flute ?????? There is next to nothing like that here in Massachusetts. Rather not in my area. You're amazing.

Nice old WP you found Robert. Hope the centre post is ok in this machine, so you are able to revive your beautiful Lady K.
This machine looks pretty clean, but lots of parts can be saved from this old machine for later use, so it's not a bad thing to part it out. I know that I will be saving more parts from the next older belt drive that I find to salvage. The timer included, since you showed us how to perform timer repairs.

Looks to be a great parts candidate.
Can't wait to hear about your other find. I am sure it is in just as nice shape!
Thanks for sharing!

Gorgeous washer Robert.

My aunt had a similar one in Coppertone. Hers had that exact console light, and if I remember correctly the same cycle setup. The water temperature selector on hers was located at the far left, where the Whirlpool label is on this washer, and it was a series of buttons. The agitator on hers was either white or blue.

Have a good one,
James

Lawdy, there were a lot of those Supreme 80's around Atlanta back in the late sixties.A great workhorse, I sure it will make a good donor.

Now, on to the intrigue of the one you haven't shown yet-------

Hmm, is that some sort of a date on the transmission...because I would have thought this slightly later than 1966..I have a distinct memory of my grandmother getting the matching dryer when I was 4 or so...she got rid of her 1948 Kenmore washer for a Maytag (black agitator, standard capacity) about the same time....

The gas dryer had the big drop-down door, no push-to-start switch. In its mid-life, my grandfather had to file the ignitor every year or so...one year he bought the service contract in order to get a new ignitor module installed :). Both washer and dryer lasted until the house was demolished in 1994.

WP

You should at least do a load in the WP before you mutilate him for parts. I'm sure I'll have me a few parts KM/WP's to keep my 800 going.

Nah, he's not gonna make it to the basement, if it was a Migic-Mix filter machine I would be tempted to try it.

Now on to moving my new playtoy into the basement.

Salvage Parts

Robert:

I don't know if this is possible--but let me ask a few questions about parts swapping.

First--if I had a Whirlpool similar to the one shown in your pics--but it didn't have a SUDS SAVER feature:

1) Would I be able to take an old pump from one like yours and an old console from one like yours and create my dream machine?

2) If this is indeed possible--would you consider making me a deal on the pump and the console after you get the center post off this baby?

Thanks.

Dan

Who's plotzing? Its a parts machine.

So anyway hmmph, here is the other find yesterday at the Sales, its just gonna be a play toy for a little bit and then I will find and good home for it, it works really well, except for a big leak at the water fill vacuum breaker, which took a ten minutes to fix (after a quick trip to the hardware store).

1-18 clean! No more dog hair in the dryer, no more packed in suds floded into the fabric after final spin, no more soapy rinse water again.

And there are transistors inside that machine too.........

Hubby, will love it as a daily driver. You'll make that a keeper.

More waiting for the Lady...

unimatic1140's profile picture
and wouldn't you know it the center post is in 100 times worse shape that it ever was in my '57 Lady Kenmore! Oy!! Well to look on the bright side I got a good motor out of this machine and just in time because recently the motor in my '52 Whirlpool has become very loud.

But unfotunately the search continues for a good baseplate with a centerpost that isn't completely rotted away! Talk about a poor design, why oh why couldn't they have used stainless steel for the centerpost, i mean its in a hard place to dry out and its underwater during the entire wash and rinse cycle. ***hand on back of forehead***

Anybody have an abandon standard capacity??

rickr's profile picture
Too bad Robert!
That is a poor design, no doubt, however they all lasted for decades with this design even so.

Here is a "before" pixs of my 56 Kenmore tub.
I just cleaned this one up and POR15ed it a couple times. It's odd that this KM post is not that bad, considering what the machine went though.(sat in the junkyard with an acid leaking car battery on the console)
I guess that you may be better off looking for one that may have sat for years unused. It seems that what must rust the centrepost is when the machine is in use, rather than sitting outside unused as my KM did.

Save the panel...you never know.

gansky1's profile picture
Rust and scuzz in the outer tub -- who knew??

I think a later belt-drive from the 70's or so might yield a good baseplate, at least better...

Post# 274284 , Reply# 40   4/8/2008 at 13:50 (5,859 days old) by retro-man (- boston,ma)

As a question and suggestion on these center posts and baseplates, is it possible to have one of these made by a local machine shop? I don't know how these attach to the drum but it seems if they come off they could go on. Then it could be made out of the type of metal you desire. I have never seen one clean or new so again I have no experience in this situation. Just a vote of confidence to a new direction. Does anyone have pics they could post of what a new or a good one looks like in or out of a machine? I am sure there are a lot of us out here very interested and have never seen. (virgins). oh my. Thanks
Jon

And not in a good way. I am sorry, Robert. Been following the saga for some time now.
You'll find a clean center post someday. I just know it.

One thing I do wonder, could it be that Whirlpool had not anticipated something or other in one of the cleaning products which came along years after these machines were designed? I am thinking, look what Shout! does to the faceplate of so many consoles or the bellows on earlier thumpers. Be great if you found someone who had only used soap and was allergic to bleach or whatever.
