Do modern Whirlpool built top loading washers still do the neutral drain? I haven't used a Whirlpool since our Imperial died in 1978.

Just wondering,

Lawrence/Maytagbear

Yes Sir, they do still neutral drain, or they are supposed to anyway! Glad you are recovering well! You were missed around here!

Yes, they do. The first direct-drive machines had a spin-drain. A couple years or so after that, the transmission was revised to provide a neutral drain. It's built-in to the tranny design. When the motor runs one direction for agitation, it presets the tranny for neutral drain. The motor pauses then reverses for spin . . but it doesn't spin, it neutral drains. The motor pauses again and restarts in the reverse direction, and spin is triggered. There MUST be the second pause and restart to trigger spin.

Why would a Kenmore DD have neutral drain after agitate, but not after rinse? I picked one up the other day that is exhibiting such symptoms. It has neutral drain after it agitates in wash, like normal, but after rinse agitation,it goes into a spin, stops like it's supposed to,and then continues to spin.

Weird...my DD Kenmore sometimes kicks into spin during neutral drain, but it happens very rarely. You can hear it plainly even if the lid isn't up: "Click...BANG...BANG...whirrrr..." as the tub is trying to spin full of water.

But why would it spin-drain every time after rinse, but not wash? I really don't quite understand that. Does it begin the neutral drain and then suddenly kick into spin? If it does, it might need a new neutral drain kit to correct the problem, but it seems like the spin-drain is part of the normal cycle operation...

The tranny is getting worn and the shorter agitation during rinse isn't long enough to activate the neutral drain mechanism.

This happens to almost every DD after a few years of use. DADoES is exactly correct about what causes this. I really don't think it's a big deal. I don't even consider it a problem anymore. They can run that way indefinately. My mothers 1988 Lady Kenmore has done this for 15 years. Still has the original motor coupling !

My machine does it all the time after the wash cycle unless the first wash of the day is heavy duty. I feel that the tranny oil is too thick causing the tranny to misbehave. Once she is fired up with the first load on HD she is sweet as pie in all the other cycles.

I know that the above statement is not true, but that's how I feel.

My DD will go right into spin if set between low and medium water levels. It sometimes does it with a full load, but the only concern i have is losing the fabric softener.

The compact whirlpools like mine does the same thing. It drains for a few minutes without spinning the tub. The mechanicals however are a bit different. These washers do not have a transmission, but agitate by changing the direction of the motor. To spin, the brake locks the wash tub and the agitator together, and then the two go off and run at the same time in one direction. The solenoid brake, when activated, frees the brake, and is also electrically connected to the water drain pump, so when the washer starts the spin/drain mode, you hear a clunk, the hum of the water pump, and the gurgle of the water draining out. Then, a few minutes later the whirring of the motor as it gets the tub up to speed.

Works pretty well I've noticed. The clothes seem to distribute within the tub well for minimal shaking during spin.

My DD Kenmore does the same thing sometimes, complete with the sound effect :-) I have also noticed that when it started to neutral drain, it spins the agitator one complete turn.

MY 1986 LK has done this for quite some time. Initially it started sporadically, but as time wwent on, it increased in its frequency. Kinda along the lines of Larry's comment, I will run it on high-speed spin for 6 minutes. Then when I do my first load, on kint as usual for 8 minutes, it will correctly sequence. But I'm now noticing the 6 or 8 minute high speed spin isn't doing the tricjk either.
