Found an ad from 1960 for GE's Golden Anniversary line of appliances, which included what I'm sure is the model solid tub washer we had when I was a wee lad. I loved this machine more than any other as I was the one who picked it out from the showroom floor of Mr. Bombaci's appliance garage in Centerbrook CT. I chose it because it had the blue plastic filter-flo pan I coveted. It was a cool machine. Near BOL but it had that "Water Saver" switch that let you choose any fill level less than full. It came with the warning not to use it with the water below the ridge on the activator. It also had a little rubber "wedge" on the rim of the washer top under the lid that I now know was the cutout for the rinse conditioner dispenser that was featured on the TOL models thanks to the members and webmaster. This was a very humble machine but it was bought second-hand, already 4 years old, and lasted for at least 10 more years till we moved away. It lived in a utility room that was separate from the house and housed the hot water heater and fishing gear. First thing whenever we came to the house at the beginning of the season, I would grab the key to that room, as it was accessible only from the outside, and check the machine as it had lain dormant for 8 months. Rosebud. |

Personally, I think "humble" is cool. Check out this BOL Hotpoint pair on Ebay!

There's something about a BOL machine or near-so that intrigues me. I think the term "humble" is a perfect choice of words. I would rather have a BOL machine, and their simplicity fascinates me for reasons I can't explain. Lady Ks, TOL Maytags, etc. are all very nice and dandy, but I like the lesser stuff just as much if not more. G |

My thoughts exactly, Gordon, I've always had a tender spot for the BOL appliances. Something about their simplicity and utilitarian look always got to me. Perhaps it's because that's the way they all started out looking in the early days...or perhaps all the machines I saw growing up were BOL or MOL at best. Midwestern conservative shoppers! I like the BOL or MOL machines myself. The reason, how many times have I actually used the Ultra-Fine-Super-Gentle wash anyway? or the Super-Dooper-soakalator wash, or the Extra-quick tiny tub--almost never. It't fun to have all the shinny dials but I don't use them. Mainly I use Regular cycle, Warm/Cold. I rarely used the PermPress cycle because it uses too much water. When I bought my machine in '95, my biggest demand was I wanted the infinate water level so I could adjust the watr level to something besides pre-set levels. |
